Crews are ready to begin pouring the concrete for the curbs over the next few days. The parking areas are to follow.

The contractor will be ready to start on the sidewalks by the middle of next week.

The contractor has indicated they will work on sidewalks in front of approximately four businesses at a time, moving from one end of the street to the other.

If you have any questions regarding these new developments, please contact Chad.

June 29th, 2010

The Adel City Council passed Resolution 10-35 at last night’s council meeting.

The resolution enacts temporary one hour parking for the downtown area during the construction of the brick streets. The goal of this decision is to allow everyone downtown access and parking during the street work. It takes affect June 29th. View the full resolution and Map of affected areas

Here is a time line of what to expect in the next week or so of work: The crews should be finishing up the storm and sub-drainage work by next week – June 30.

By the end of that week and into next they will begin moving dirt off the site and begin compacting and grading – July 9.

After that they will begin bringing in truck loads of crushed rock and begin building the sub-base. I believe the contractor and engineer are hopeful that the string line for concrete work can be put in place around the July 9 – 12 time frame.

The crews will be working on Saturdays and Sundays as much as possible and as weather permits.

Please note that temporary one hour parking restrictions will go into place and enforced beginning on Tuesday, July 29th pending city council approval of the resolution authorizing such on Monday night.

This parking restriction is for the downtown area and will be in place for the duration of the street project. It does not apply to areas marked for parking less than one hour, such as 15 or 30 minute loading zone – those remain in effect.

The project encountered an unexpected turn on Monday, June 15th as the brick were removed became dry and brittle. This came as a surprise as several of both layers of brick had been tested for strength and moisture content.

The bricks were determined unusable and will be recycled to shore up the erosion along the river bank caused by repeated flooding. This may cause a slight deviation in brick patterns used in the cross-walks or intersections.

There have been several comments about the brick pallets being stacked on the Court House lawn. Rest assured; the contractor and Dallas County had previously discussed the arrangement and the contractor will be responsible for restoring the lawn to its previous condition.

Work on the storm water improvements and connections will be finished throughout this week and next before grading begins. This will also include installation of the sub-drain system.

The Morning Report
Crews were working through this morning’s rain until the ground became over saturated. They have been delegated to other necessary projects around town with plans to return to Main and Court Street this afternoon.

June 16th, 2010

Update! (5:00 P.M.) – The lights will be active tonight on 9th and Main.

Crews are digging a trench from the Court House to businesses on the south side of Main Street for telephone lines. There is a high level of machinery in use, limiting the sidewalks. Proceed with caution.

How many bricks will it take to finish the project? Some have guessed as high as 1.5 million, experts say that no more than 300,000 bricks will be used!

Sidewalk has been removed from the north side of Main Street. Removal of the surface layer of brick on Court Street is making progress.

The Morning Report
The second layer of bricks has been removed from the 800 block of Main St.

The bricks had been buried for over 100 years and as a result, began to crumble when exposed. The city decided to make use of those structurally unsound bricks to shore up the erosion along the river bank caused by repeated flooding.

The work will now shift to removing the existing curb and gutter along Main St. and removal of bricks on Court St.

June 11th, 2010

A skid loader is being used to bring the bricks up and then the crew cleans and stacks them on pallets. Several pallets of bricks have already been filled. Even with yesterdays rain delay, a lot of progress has been made in removing the bricks.

Work to take down the street lights is continuing. They are removing the smaller lamp posts along the courthouse side this morning.

Parking Update: Crews are preparing to start saw cuts along the 900 block of Main– parking will be limited on this block during the process.

Brick Street Renovation Project is underway!

June 10, 2010 The painstaking process of removing the bricks began this morning on Main St. and Court St. between Nile Kinnick Dr. and 9th St.
Pedestrian traffic is possible through this area, but it is a construction zone so please be careful.

Historic Ground Breaking Gallery
