Questions, comments, and discussions:

Work begins on 9th Street
1) Demolition work will begin on 9th Street at 6:30am Monday, August 16th. The sidewalk on the west side of 9th Street will remain open for pedestrian use while the street and sidewalk on the east side of 9th Street will be closed to the public for removal. Access to businesses and apartment doorways will be available at all times.

2) The sidewalk work on Main Street, west of 9th Street will also begin on Monday. The north sidewalk work will begin first as there are storm drainage improvements that need to be made prior to other work. The south side of Main Street sidewalk work will not begin until the north side is completed.

3) Regarding construction on 9th Street – work will begin at the intersection with Prairie Street and progress to the north. Work flow will generally be a south to north pattern.

Phase I of the Project
4) Main Street and Court Street will open for pedestrian traffic for this weekend’s Adel Sweet Corn Festival. Those streets will also open for vehicular traffic beginning Monday morning. Traffic and parking will be available beginning Monday – please pay attention to specific cones or directional signage on those streets.

5) Brick pallets and remaining equipment will be secured on the Courthouse lawn for the Festival weekend.

Thanks again for your understanding and cooperation – please contact Chad for questions and comments.

Chamber / City Brick Street Meeting for Business Owners

August 5th, 2010: 6:00pm

Questions, comments, and discussions:

1) Brick surface quality – The quality of the brick surface on Court Street versus Main St was discussed. Many are very pleased with the finished product on Court Street but there seem to be some issues with the final product on Main St. Discussion ensued about how to handle the surface on Main and Jeff Schug, from McClure Engineering will be working with the contractor in the next several weeks to address the concerns. It is likely that the brick will not be replaced, if that is the resulting action, until a later time.

2) Storm drain and system work has been completed and remaining sidewalks will be poured on Saturday (August 7th).

3) There was general discussion about the sidewalks on Main Street, open access etc.

4) There was discussion about the staging of Phase II construction, which is 9th Street. It was confirmed that work on 9th Street will not begin until after the festival. All should be prepared for 9th Street to be closed beginning Monday, August 16th.

5) Opening of Main and Court Streets was discussed. It appears that each street will be opened and operate similar to a “Dead end”. We are still working on the details of parking on each street but details on that will be released by the end of the week of August 13th.

6) The members in attendance also expressed desire to be kept informed of final parking and street closing and opening information in the next week.

The meeting adjourned at 6:30pm.

Thanks again for your understanding and cooperation – please contact me for questions and comments.

Brick Street Update – July 17th, 2010

Business leaders and residents,

The street project is coming along at a rapid pace now. After speaking with the contractors and engineers this morning it appears that Main Street will be ready for hand work and crosswalks by early in the week. Court Street will follow right behind.

It is anticipated that the parking areas on Court Street will be poured beginning Monday – weather permitting.

Also on Monday, sidewalk removal work will begin on the west end of Main Street (south side) and progress eastward. It is anticipated that the contractors will look to do no more than half the block first and complete that work before moving on to the eastern half of the sidewalks.

This is the critical stage we have all been anticipating – please, if you have concerns about access to your business/building now is the time to engage in the discussions. We have a progress meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 20th at 1:00pm. If you have any questions, concerns or comments I urge you to call me, the engineers, or plan on attending the meeting. The meetings are held in the Dallas County Board of Supervisor’s conference room; 121 North 9th Street.

I believe the sub-contractors are looking to begin lying the brick back down by the end of this next week.

Regarding Main Street, west of 9th. I believe the plan is to remove and replace the North sidewalk and curb sections in the next couple of weeks and have that section completed before the Sweetcorn Festival. The south side of Main Street, west of 9th is planned for removal and replacement until after the Festival. Again, if you have questions about this schedule, please let me know.

Finally, there is an update meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 22 at 6:00pm at City Hall – I hope to see you there.

Thank you for all your patience during this project.

Embracing our History,
Celebrating our Future!

July 16th, 2010

It’s been a busy week for the street crews. The center lanes were poured on both Court and Main. The parking has been graveled and the curb and gutter has been poured on Main.

Today the crews are removing the old cement next to the highway in preparation of starting on the sidewalks along Main Street. The sidewalk construction will incorporate bridges so that customers can still visit their favorite downtown businesses.

DiscoverAdel will have daily information on the business affected and their alternate access points during the sidewalk stage.
