Help Support the Adel Good Samaritan Food Pantry Wish List

Courtesy of Adel Food Pantry:Adel Good Samaritan Food Pantry

The Adel Good Samaritan Food Pantry has had strong community and area support for over 35 years.

This support is critical to helping our small non-profit organization serve the families in our region who are “food insecure.”

Your donations of staple groceries and fresh produce are vital to providing healthy and well-rounded food choices for our clients. But just as important are your regular financial contributions.

To keep our Pantry fully-stocked, we buy food weekly from the Food Bank of Iowa, local and regional grocery wholesalers and suppliers. We also have modest overhead costs for staff, rent, utilities, insurance and transportation.

Here is our current “WISH LIST” of ways you can help Good Samaritan Food Pantry continue to serve the growing number of adults and children in our area who would go to bed hungry many nights without your gifts and donations.

  • A gift of $50 will buy 6 cases (144 boxes) of macaroni and cheese
  • A gift of $100 will buy 7 cases (84 jars) of peanut butter
  • A gift of $115 will cover our utilities for a month ($1,400 for a year)
  • A gift of $280 will cover our rent and insurance for a month ($3,360) for a year.)
  • A gift of $400 will provide weekend backpacks for Middle School and High School for a month ($4,800 a year.)
  • A gift of $750 will help stock the Pantry with food staples for a week ($3,000 a month.)
  • A gift of $1,000 will buy 350 pounds of fresh meat and chicken we give to each family.

For additional information about one-time or capital items helpful to Good Samaritan Food Pantry’s work in our community, please contact Celia McCollum at (515) 478-3760.  Donations can be sent to GSFP, P.O. Box 141, Adel, IA 50003.

Terry The Turkey Hunter

Terry Traveller

Gobble, gobble, fellow travelers! It is I, your beloved Terry T., here to soothe your woes with another artfully written tale of wonderment. Today, we talk turkey.

Thanksgiving is full of traditions- parades, shopping, the ceremonial cheek pinching of long forgotten relatives. But there is one tradition I enjoy more than any. Well, kind of, because I certainly enjoy the annual watching of The Burbs with Mr. Tom Hanks immensely.

You may not know this, kind reader, but I enjoy turkey hunting. Oh yes, I know its seen as barbaric and uncouth. For many, the idea of waking up before sunrise, donning camouflage overalls and a neon vest, and pouring a thermos full of bitter black coffee in the cold November morn is simply preposterous.

But there is an exhilaration, sirs and madams. The sun brighter, the crisp air pungent with anticipation as I walk quietly across the vast field, weapon in hand. I stake out the perfect spot, and quickly eye my prize. A 23lb gobbler waiting to be mine. I look around, set my sights, and calmly pull the trigger.

“I’ll take that one!” I cry and soon, it is mine. I walk with great hast, nervous someone will rip my prize from my arms, and in my hast, bump smack into Cory, the friendly manager of Fareway who smiles and asks if I need help with my grocery bags. To which I reply, “no, Mr. Grocer, this Butterball is all I need.”

I return to my truck with its empty gun rack, a sentimental gift from a long lost love, and let out my turkey call, victorious once again, before returning home to research brining solutions. It’s going to be a most wonderful Thanksgiving indeed.

This is Terry Traveler saying, Happy Thanksgiving to all, and to all a good night.

Terry Traveler – “Remembers” the Last 10 Years

Terry Traveller

My, my, dear readers. Can you believe its been 10 years? A full decade of reporting my travels for DiscoverAdel.com. Wow.

If you’d asked me 10 years ago, “Terry? Where will you be in 10 years?”

I think I would have said, “I’ll be drinking coffee. Why, do you want to pick up some donuts?”

To which I say today, “Hey! You’re late and I can’t believe you forgot the donuts.”

Never would I ever have guessed I would be celebrating such a landmark occasion with my good friends of Adel.

It’s been sweet, these past 10 years. I still have my Waponi Woo orange soda koozie, a ticket stub from Cairo, and 6 jars of unknown coins. I was an amazing cheese roller and I have the sash to prove it. I was both honored by, and later banned from, Scotland for my Bagpipe Concerto #4 and #7, respectively. I now know what its like to stand in the forest with yuppies, and will forever know the terrifying smell of their Birkenstocks.

Remember, that guy with the orange parrot that matched his orange car? That was funny. And that time I was supposed to cover New Year’s Eve in New York but I spent the travel expenses on an original photocopy of the Gremlin 2 movie script signed by Steve McQueen? Good times.

And now, 10 years later, you ask me, Well I just don’t know, friend. But I can say this: where there is a story to tell, you’ll find me. When something odd is happening, I’ll be there. When readers cry out for sanity, honor, and accountability,

I’ll point them in the other direction. For I may not know where this world will take me, and I may not care, but my heart will always be in Adel. Unless its somewhere else. Like Tahiti. Or stored in one of those creepy scientist jars. Or eaten by a lion on the safari. All fine options, mind you, but Adel is my second favorite. I just love a good safari.

This is Terry Traveler saying, it may not be true, but its always true and that’s the scary part.

Terry Traveler – Goes White Water Rafting

Terry Traveller

Terry Traveler here, your loyal world tourist. I think you’re ready to hear about the 22nd time I almost died.

Like the 21 times before, the day started like any other. I found myself thrown into a group of thrill seekers, headed west to surmount an unknown challenge.

The trip was long, and no one seemed to appreciate my rendition of Tiptoe Through the Tulips on the portable bagpipes.

I don’t know why, as they opted to play something they called EDM for the entire 12 hour trip, a noise which sounded to me like a chorus of heartbeats and injured cats. To each their own, I suppose.

Once we reached our destination, we then hiked another 4 miles into the wilderness. It was a pleasant walk as I am most at home when I have no idea where I am, or where I am going.

Finally, we reached a wooden cabin and met Ted, our Whitewater Rafting Tour Guide. I was happy to have brought my towel for such an expedition. Ted was a happy young man of 20, set on giving us the ride of our lives down the river and through the mountains. None of the tourist rapids for us, the group cheered, we were set for an adventure.

After what seemed like hours of training and miles of legal releases, we were ready to tackle the rapids. Feet locked into our little boat, we rowed down stream at 760 cubicle inches of water per minute- I have no idea how to translate that to miles per hour, so lets say 4. It felt much like a roller coaster- fast and swooping from rock to rock, with mellow moments of calm right before another fast and swooping stretch.

I was a captain at sea: water splashing over the sides, nautical calls from Ted to “Bank Left and Hold the Tee!”- we traversed those mighty waters as a well oiled machine.

The next thing I remember was the swirl of ice cold Rocky Mountain water, the sounds of hollering, staring at a boulder just inches from my face, and two arms snapping me back into the boat. At that moment we hit the boulder, sending us all flying into the center of the boat, sloshing to and fro with the currents, until settling into a mild little cove of tranquility.

It was an intense 54 seconds, during which I’d like to say my life flashed before my eyes, but it may have been a Sylvester Stallone movie. I don’t remember being a trucker that likes to arm wrestle, but its a wild life being me, so who can say for sure.

This is Terry Traveler saying: don’t be afraid of the unknown destination or the thrills that comes with it. Just remember to take your towel, and hang out with guys like Ted who will pull you back in the boat. – Terry

Adel Party to Commemorate Kinnick’s 100th Birthday July 7th

Nile Kinnick Museum - Adel IowaCourtesy of Adel Partners:

Adel Partners Chamber, City of Adel, FRYfest to Commemorate Kinnick’s 100th Birthday

On Saturday, July 7, a private ribbon cutting celebration will be held at the Kinnick Addition of the Adel Historical Museum at 10:00 am followed by a community gathering until 2:00 pm at the Adel Pavilion (located at 10th and Main St.)

FRYfest, Coralville’s annual celebration of all things Hawkeye, which takes place annually on the Friday before the first home football game, will be on hand to help celebrate. Kinnick’s 100th birthday will be a focus at this year’s FRYfest on August 31 in the Iowa River Landing in Coralville. With the assistance of the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, FRYfest will bring a bust of Kinnick to the event in Adel.

Dora Mason, a long time Iowa City resident and UI graduate, sculpted the bust in 1940. Mason and Kinnick became friends and she observed him while he studied for a final exam. She sculpted the bust out of clay, later to be cast in bronze.

Also in attendance will be the author of the book Nile, T. Lidd; producer of the upcoming movie The Ironmen, Joe Heath; and Herky the Hawk.

The event is open to the public at the Stage and Pavilion with birthday cake and selfies with Kinnick bust.
