Adel Library Supports the Good Samaritan Food Pantry
Courtesy of Adel Library:During the 2018-2019 school year, the library partnered with the Good Samaritan Food Pantry to provide after-school snacks to kids.
Beginning in October, we served snacks three afternoons a week and by the end of the year, 588 kids had a free snack at the library.
We are excited to offer snacks again next school year!

Hope Changes Everything #StandleyStrong
Lorinda & John Standley
We’ve all met someone who prefers to remain in the shadows, giving their whole heart without the need for recognition; people who have touched our lives through acts of kindness and generosity made without a hint of expectation. For people like this, “being noticed” is never the intent.
That is why this month DiscoverAdel.com is sharing a different kind of story. This month, we are asking our community of friends, family, and neighbors for your support in honor of two special people who would never ask for themselves.
Some of you may know John and Lorinda Standley, owners of Adel Auto Parts. If you are lucky enough to know this dynamic couple, you know how much they love Adel. For the past 18 years, they have made this town their home while striving to be unnoticed for their good deeds. The NAPA affiliate located on the downtown square buzzes with community activity each day. The windows of the store are often covered with local flyers for events supporting fellow business owners and organizations. When the community calls for volunteers, both John and Lorinda continue to help by offering their time, donations, support, and good humor. Now, it is time for us to give back.
In December 2017, Lorinda was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. She has stoically endured chemotherapy treatments, now an indefinite plan.
Not one to complain, Lorinda participates in testing through Des Moines Mercy and the Mayo Clinic, hoping to help other families faced with similar hardships and difficulties. Even now, Lorinda chooses to help others every way she can.
In June, the couple celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary and in all that time has never asked for help.
In truth, they are not the ones asking now. It is John and Lorinda’s family, friends, and employees who have taken on this task and are asking the Adel community to encourage, support and give back to Lorinda the resources she needs in her fight to conquer cancer.

Eat, Drink, and Be Giving
Please join us July 26th at Country Lane Lodge in Adel for an eventful night of fun and fundraising for John and Lorinda Standley.
The evening will start with a silent auction from 5-7:30 pm, with a live auction for big ticket items, starting at 7:30 pm.
Our MC for the night will be Jason Zeliadt of NAPA, a lively presenter known for his ability to keep events fun while reminding everyone of the reason for being there.
Guests will receive a numbered wristband when they arrive, allowing for anonymous bids during the silent auction.
Organizers have gathered more than 35 items to date for both auctions including a large NAPA tool box (retails for over $1,000+) and a set of 3 games at Wells Fargo Arena, which include: one 2020 Iowa Barnstormers home game, one 2020 Iowa Wolves home game, and one 2020 Iowa Wild home game. The package comes with 4 tickets in a box suite and 2 VIP parking passes. *does not include food or beverage. The group will continue to accept donations for the live and silent auction until July 14th.
The fundraising benefit will also have live music and entertainment by The Black Hat Heroes, playing songs you want to hear, but don’t hear every day.

Dinner will be served that night from 6-7:30 pm, featuring mouthwatering Texas-style BBQ and sides catered by Kue’d Smokehouse, winners of TLC’s 2010 “BBQ Pit Masters” Championship. Meal tickets are $10. In addition, Country Lane Lodge will offer a cash bar.

Motivational tee shirts will also be on sale for $15, sporting the phrase “Hope Changes Everything #StandleyStrong”.
Tee shirts not only spread the word about the Standley Benefit, but they also help John and Lorinda see, day in and day out, how many care for them in our community.
Guests are invited to spread the word far and wide, making sure all are welcome to share in this outpouring of support.
Organizers have partnered with the Hampton Inn West Des Moines Lake Drive Hotel for guest rooms and shuttle service the night of the benefit. To book the discounted rate, please call the hotel directly at (515) 223-4700 and ask for the “Standley Benefit” block. You can also book online.
“People can come and go as they please, roam around the beautiful grounds, and share in a fun night. The goal is to create a fun atmosphere where people can enjoy themselves, help raise money for my parents and, most importantly, come and support my mom.” Chris Standley, Son & Standley Benefit organizer.
For Lorinda, the July 26th benefit is also about raising funds for Cancer.org, a valuable resource for the Standley’s and those fighting cancer. Donations to the American Cancer Society are used to fund breakthrough research, free rides to treatment, free places to stay near hospitals, and other critical patient services.
As the only doctor approved cancer website, many have turned to the organization for support, research, and more in their times of need. Because John and Lorinda will always put others before themselves, a portion of the proceeds from the benefit will be donated to help others fight the good fight.

Adel Public Library Adult Fiction Classics Section

At the Adel Public Library Paula and Trever love old books!
Last year year they began a project to create an adult fiction Classics section.
After purchasing new shelving, with the generous financial support of the Friends Foundation, rescuing some of the oldest books in the library, and adding nearly 100 new titles to their collection, they now have a wonderful new Classics section with nearly 650 titles!

Help Support the Adel Good Samaritan Food Pantry Wish List
The Adel Good Samaritan Food Pantry has had strong community and area support for over 35 years.
This support is critical to helping our small non-profit organization serve the families in our region who are “food insecure.”
Your donations of staple groceries and fresh produce are vital to providing healthy and well-rounded food choices for our clients. But just as important are your regular financial contributions.
To keep our Pantry fully-stocked, we buy food weekly from the Food Bank of Iowa, local and regional grocery wholesalers and suppliers. We also have modest overhead costs for staff, rent, utilities, insurance and transportation.
Here is our current “WISH LIST” of ways you can help Good Samaritan Food Pantry continue to serve the growing number of adults and children in our area who would go to bed hungry many nights without your gifts and donations.
- A gift of $50 will buy 6 cases (144 boxes) of macaroni and cheese
- A gift of $100 will buy 7 cases (84 jars) of peanut butter
- A gift of $115 will cover our utilities for a month ($1,400 for a year)
- A gift of $280 will cover our rent and insurance for a month ($3,360) for a year.)
- A gift of $400 will provide weekend backpacks for Middle School and High School for a month ($4,800 a year.)
- A gift of $750 will help stock the Pantry with food staples for a week ($3,000 a month.)
- A gift of $1,000 will buy 350 pounds of fresh meat and chicken we give to each family.

Terry The Turkey Hunter
Gobble, gobble, fellow travelers! It is I, your beloved Terry T., here to soothe your woes with another artfully written tale of wonderment. Today, we talk turkey.
Thanksgiving is full of traditions- parades, shopping, the ceremonial cheek pinching of long forgotten relatives. But there is one tradition I enjoy more than any. Well, kind of, because I certainly enjoy the annual watching of The Burbs with Mr. Tom Hanks immensely.
You may not know this, kind reader, but I enjoy turkey hunting. Oh yes, I know its seen as barbaric and uncouth. For many, the idea of waking up before sunrise, donning camouflage overalls and a neon vest, and pouring a thermos full of bitter black coffee in the cold November morn is simply preposterous.
But there is an exhilaration, sirs and madams. The sun brighter, the crisp air pungent with anticipation as I walk quietly across the vast field, weapon in hand. I stake out the perfect spot, and quickly eye my prize. A 23lb gobbler waiting to be mine. I look around, set my sights, and calmly pull the trigger.
“I’ll take that one!” I cry and soon, it is mine. I walk with great hast, nervous someone will rip my prize from my arms, and in my hast, bump smack into Cory, the friendly manager of Fareway who smiles and asks if I need help with my grocery bags. To which I reply, “no, Mr. Grocer, this Butterball is all I need.”
I return to my truck with its empty gun rack, a sentimental gift from a long lost love, and let out my turkey call, victorious once again, before returning home to research brining solutions. It’s going to be a most wonderful Thanksgiving indeed.

2019 Hall of Fame Inductees
Norene Groff Heaps, Class of 1977, was a multi-sport athlete at Adel-DeSoto High School. She was a 2nd team all-stater in softball, 3rd team all-stater in basketball, once scoring a single game career high 60 points and a state track meet medal winner, 6 times in hurdle events.
Wesley Nordquist, Class of 2009, was a two sport athlete at ADM High School. He was a 1st team all-stater in basketball and a member of two conference championship teams. He also was a member of the 3rd place state tournament squad. He finished 2nd in career rebounding in school history. Wesley’s multi-sports included participating as a wide receiver in football.
Jim Peters, Class of 1971, was a letter winner in basketball, football, track and cross-country at Adel High School. He was all-state honorable mention in football and team captain of the state qualifying basketball team. He was selected honorable mention all-state in basketball.
Bill Shields, Coach, helped start the ADM soccer program in 1988 with 18 players. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame. His teams have won three conference championships and qualified for the state tournament 7 times, with a 4th place finish in 2012.
The induction ceremony will take place at the ADM Alumni All Class reunion, Thursday, August 8, 2019.
There will be a reception from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the 7-8 Commons Area. The ADM Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony starts at 7:00 p.m.

This month, we were honored to meet with Kevin Hircock, founder of Team RunFree, a nonprofit organization in Adel that shares the joy of adaptive running, one race at a time.
Terry Traveler – “Remembers” the Last 10 Years
My, my, dear readers. Can you believe its been 10 years? A full decade of reporting my travels for DiscoverAdel.com. Wow.
If you’d asked me 10 years ago, “Terry? Where will you be in 10 years?”
I think I would have said, “I’ll be drinking coffee. Why, do you want to pick up some donuts?”
To which I say today, “Hey! You’re late and I can’t believe you forgot the donuts.”
Never would I ever have guessed I would be celebrating such a landmark occasion with my good friends of Adel.
It’s been sweet, these past 10 years. I still have my Waponi Woo orange soda koozie, a ticket stub from Cairo, and 6 jars of unknown coins. I was an amazing cheese roller and I have the sash to prove it. I was both honored by, and later banned from, Scotland for my Bagpipe Concerto #4 and #7, respectively. I now know what its like to stand in the forest with yuppies, and will forever know the terrifying smell of their Birkenstocks.
Remember, that guy with the orange parrot that matched his orange car? That was funny. And that time I was supposed to cover New Year’s Eve in New York but I spent the travel expenses on an original photocopy of the Gremlin 2 movie script signed by Steve McQueen? Good times.
And now, 10 years later, you ask me, Well I just don’t know, friend. But I can say this: where there is a story to tell, you’ll find me. When something odd is happening, I’ll be there. When readers cry out for sanity, honor, and accountability,
I’ll point them in the other direction. For I may not know where this world will take me, and I may not care, but my heart will always be in Adel. Unless its somewhere else. Like Tahiti. Or stored in one of those creepy scientist jars. Or eaten by a lion on the safari. All fine options, mind you, but Adel is my second favorite. I just love a good safari.
