"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 103 May 2017
|
When Lori and I were first starting out we had a place across the street from the local bakery. I was addicted to fresh pastries and fresh baked bread. The baker and his wife created some of the best food in the county, and there would be a line to pick up baked items for the holidays. No Easter was complete without a dozen hot crossed buns.
But the most lasting impression for me was the knowledge they passed onto their kids and employees. Training them in each aspect of the business and customer service, life skills actually.
This month we have an interview with Peg DeLoriea from the Adel Brick Street Bakery. The bakery is so much more than a place to pick up a fresh donut to go with your morning coffee.
So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

Peg DeLoriea - Brick St. Bakery
Freshly baked-goods are available in Adel! This month, we spoke with Cafe & Bakery Business Manager Peg DeLoriea of Optimae LifeServices about the new Brick Street Bakery, located on the west side of the courthouse square at 109 North 9th Street. In 2011, Optimae LifeServices opened Brick Street Books & Cafe, located at 803 Main Street in Adel. Brick Street Books & Cafe is a bookstore and coffeehouse that serves as a hub of social activity, bringing together all walks of life.
The micro business offers a supported workplace, serving customers with mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities. Through the company's core values of choice, respect, teamwork, and education, Optimae micro businesses provide opportunities to grow and work in family-like environments. By matching people's skills with the work they love, Optimae gives customers a valued role while helping them climb out of poverty and become productive members of their communities. "When our employees navigate in their community to establish banking, shopping, legal services, volunteer and church opportunities, they seek these opportunities with greater confidence. The community is no longer a stranger to them because they have worked in a position serving the community"Peg is honored to help her clients learn new life skills through encouragement and understanding, lessons she learned herself working as an Executive Chef for many years. "I have such a passion for this [work]. Its awesome when we can come along side people who struggle to find their role and place and help them find it. And help the community understand that our [customers] have a role and a place- that their valued role and place is no less impacting on the world than mine or yours. This life is hard enough and we spend a lot of time at work. We should be enjoying the experience." Customer employees receive one-on-one job coaching to provide them with education and support they need to be successful on the job. With the addition of Adel's Brick Street Bakery in 2016, Optimae LifeServices now runs 10 micro businesses spread across Central and Southeastern Iowa that support more than 80 jobs for its customers.
The Brick Street Cafe offers a classic cafe menu including breakfast items, organic coffee drinks, catering options, homemade soups, luncheon salads, and sandwiches.
Thanks to overwhelming support, the Cafe's popularity could not keep up with the restaurant's need for fresh baked breads, pies, and pastries as well as the increasing catering demands in the small kitchen.
In September 2016, Optimae opened the Brick Street Bakery to provide their customers with another employment opportunity and expand the baked goods available to the Adel community. Optimae also relocated its main offices to 401 Visions Parkway to better serve Dallas County customers.
The Brick Street Bakery offers fresh pastries and baked goods such as donuts, pies, muffins, bread, and pastries. The bakery uses a single drop method for dispensing the batter into the oil, and turns the donuts by hand- an old school method that creates an outstanding flavor and consistency.
Bakery guests enjoy the historic building with picturesque views of the downtown square. Paired with fair-trade organic coffee and espresso drinks, the bakery has quickly become a favorite spot for Adel citizens.

Vote daily in-store and online now through July 31st, 2017. Coming in 2017, Optimae will be adding a patio to the bakery.
"We want to give something back to Adel for being so good to us. Let's promote community; let's create a safe, inviting, family-oriented area for people to enjoy. The blueprints have been designed and the new patio will start construction soon. I can tell you there will be bike racks. The patio will be available for the community's enjoyment."

Peg cannot stress enough how happy she is to see the Brick Street Bakery and Brick Street Books & Café making a difference in Adel.
"If we can promote relationships and provide a place for that to happen, we are going to do it. We enjoy seeing friends and family meet at our locations and spend quality time. We are blessed to be able to provide this for our community.
We have wonderful teams at the Café and Bakery and their passion is to serve. It's not about me or what ability I have, but about the entire team, working together, growing, and creating an atmosphere where life occurs."

BASE® Staff Volunteers at Meals from the Heartland
BASE® employees spent a Friday afternoon packaging meals for the hungry at Meals from the Heartland, a charity located in West Des Moines, Iowa. In two short hours, over 17,000 meals were packaged to send to malnourished people in Iowa, across the United States and around the world. BASE® was excited to be involved in helping others in need and jumped at the opportunity to donate their time. Laura Radebaugh and Jessica Reynolds, employees at BASE®, organized the event for the company. "When asking for charity ideas we could do as a team, we got the suggestion to package meals at Meals from the Heartland from an employee. It turned out to be a huge success. Our staff is wonderful and volunteered their personal time to work as a team and help feed people. We all worked hard and had a great time in the 2 hour shift and packaged 17,000 meals for those in need," Laura stated. Each person had their own specific job including packaging, weighing food, sealing and boxing the meal for shipping. The staff from Meals from the Heartland made the experience by providing a fun atmosphere, motivation and encouragement. The BASE® staff was accompanied by many other groups from around the community helping to support the cause. Inspired by a food-packaging event held by a church in West Des Moines back in 2007, Meals from the Heartland has encouraged thousands of volunteers to come together year-round for this meal packaging effort. They are always looking for additional groups and volunteers from the community to donate their time and support this cause. Recipe of the Month - Cheesecake Truffles
You've heard the saying, too many cooks in the kitchen, never more true than in our house. With so many talented cooks, we are bound to step on each others toes once in a while. Especially when we try to make something new and different. Recently, our oldest daughter was tasked with coming up with a bite-sized, sweet dessert with few ingredients and simple steps. She had a list of tried and true recipes off the top of her head, but no, she wanted to try something different. She spent several days throwing out ideas to her sisters, mother, aunt, and grandmothers. It seemed that each "original" recipe she came up with had already been created by one, if not all, of the cooks in the family. Finally, she struck gold - she realized if you can't beat them, join them. She took the world-class cake making ability of her aunt, mixed it with her sisters' love of tiny cookie scoops, and glazed it all with melted chocolate. Presenting Cheesecake Truffles - not an original recipe, but one that's sure to please all the cooks in your kitchen! Cheesecake Truffles:
Ingredients:
16 oz. Cream Cheese 6 T. Butter 3/4 C. Graham Crackers, crushed 1/8 tsp. Vanilla 2 C. Powdered Sugar 20 oz. Chocolate Chips Directions:1. Bring Cream Cheese and Butter to room temp.
2. In a large bowl, mix Cream Cheese and Butter until combined.
3. Add Vanilla and Graham Cracker Crumbs, mix well.
4. Add Powdered Sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, until well combined.
5. Cover and chill in the refrigerator overnight.
|
6. Line cookie sheet with wax paper. 7. Scoop chilled batter into balls, place on wax paper.
8. Chill again for 10-20 minutes.
9. Melt Chocolate Chips in the microwave, stirring every 15 seconds until smooth.
10. Dip each truffle into the Chocolate, covering completely.
11. Place back on wax paper and let cool until chocolate has hardened.
Kitchen Tip: Best when kept chilled.
Enjoy!

Hello, my friends, hello. It is I, the one, the only, Terry Traveler. This month I share with you the latest in rock'n roll news: I have joined a band. We call ourselves Eskimo Faux, a play on the colorful parkas we all wear (my brilliant idea) and the fact that we are an Inuit cover band (again, my outstanding idea.) What is an Inuit cover band you ask? Why, its a group of like minded musicians that love the smooth sounds of the 80s. You ask, which 80s? Aren't you're full of questions today. The only 80s that matter: the 1980s. We play all the hits you love, like that the one about running away from seagulls, and my original songs made famous by that piano playing, song stealing hack Billy-Joe-What's his name. Not that I'm holding on to any resentment; I just want my baby grand back from that piano stealing hack. Again, no resentment, and certainly no need for the restraining order. Piano playing, song stealing hacks sure are a sensitive lot. Eskimo Faux is a fresh, rad, tubular sound. I'm really excited to share this project with the world. Check out the song, "Take That, Piano Man!", a track from our new album, This is Terry Traveler saying, Eskimo Faux Rules! Terry
