Tom Vilsack Acknowledges ISU Extension Work
Vilsack Acknowledges ISU Extension Work, ISU Extension and Outreach celebrates 100 years
Iowa State University is the birthplace of Cooperative Extension.
On March 27, the Iowa Senate congregated at the state capitol and unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution honoring the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, the founding legislation of Extension.
More recently additional acknowledgement was made by United States Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack.
“Here at USDA, we place a high priority on making our services and resources available to all Americans,” said Vilsack. “And one of our strongest partners in this effort is the Cooperative Extension service.”
ISU Extension and Outreach of Dallas County carries out the university’s land-grant mission of engaging citizens in non-biased, research-based education. In 2013, through programs, workshops, informational trainings and online resources, Dallas County Extension reached more than 12,000 citizens. For farmers, Extension offers private pesticide applicator training, farm leasing workshops and meetings about crop insurance options. For families, information is made available concerning health, handling stress, personal finance and parenting strategies for infant children all the way through teenage years. Child care providers look to Extension to help them with quality improvement, including trainings on subjects like problem solving with children and developmentally appropriate use of iPads. Tips and services are also available for local growers with personal gardens and those who produce on a larger scale.
“Extension has improved the lives of consumers and families through things like nutrition education, food safety training and youth leadership development through the 4-H program,” Vilsack informed. “Extension has also contributed to the success of countless farms, ranches and rural businesses through everything from integrated pest management training on farms to business planning and risk management tips for entrepreneurs.”
