Terry Traveler – Birdhouse
Today, dear readers, Terry is here to talk about that number one essential travel tool- the Walkman. Oh, you jest with your Laser Discs and EarPods, but nothing represents the free, world traveler, like a Walkman.
One album with two sides that you must listen to in order, through every step of your journey or until your batteries die. That’s deep, man.
Yes, it is the Walkman that gets us Travelers out the door. I’ve checked all the pockets of my parka, triple counted the foreign currency in my sock. I’ve put my pack on my back, my sunglasses on my head, and wrapped my ears in the soft styrofoam of cheap headphones. But I haven’t clicked the “Play” button.
For the kids, a button was a plastic rectangle that when pushed, locked into place with a satisfying Click. Not a swipe and swoosh, or robotic voice saying they didn’t understand you, a loud Click. Pressing that “Play” button means I’m headed out into the world once again, and there’s no stopping me now.
I wrangle my way down the street singing my songs, grooving to the music, watching the world go by, each step moving me on and on. From here to there. To everywhere. All to the rhythm of a little bird house in my soul. (Listen, dear readers, to the sounds of your world, as I see it.
Welcome to April, my friends!
