"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 104 June 2017
|
I tried to cut my grandson's hair. We always go uptown for his haircut. He's been going to Jenny since he was a year old. Why I tried is a mystery now, but I had the clippers and scissors. I can do this. After all, my Dad cut our hair one summer.
It started well, then as I was cleaning up his neck, he sneezed... I should have stopped... but I tried to "fix" it.
Then I saw a memory of my Dad telling my mother that there was a reason Barber's went to school and that he was done cutting our hair. So I loaded up the grandson and headed to the Barber Shop where Jenny proved her skills as a barber and repaired what I had started.
I'm sure my Dad is chuckling in Heaven. I've promised to never cut hair again, but I now truly appreciate what Dad did that summer.
To all the Dad's and Grandpa's this June, have a Happy Father's Day and Thank you!
Grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

Dr. David Duroe - Adel Chiropractic
This month, the DiscoverAdel.com Business Spotlight features Dr. David Duroe and Adel Chiropractic!
For the past 22 years Adel Chiropractic has served the community as a health and wellness resource. Dr David Duroe, D.C. became interested in the healthcare field his junior year of high school.
"I wasn't sure which field to go into and was leaning towards Physical Therapy or Chiropractic. One of the great things about pursuing a career in Chiropractic is if you complete the two year Physical Therapy program while at school and pass the national board, you are able to provide Physical Therapy treatments in your office."
Dr Duroe graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in June of 1990, the first and largest chiropractic college established in 1897.
"I started practicing in January of 1991 as an associate for a multi-doctor office until I started Adel Chiropractic in April of 1995."
"Chiropractic care is a natural approach to healthcare utilizing the body's own capability to heal itself. This is accomplished by analyzing the body as a whole, looking at structure as it relates to body function. Chiropractors look closely at the spine to detect interference within the nervous system which can negatively impact the body as a whole. Removing this interference promotes a healthier environment for healing."
According to the America Chiropractic Association, "chiropractic services are used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints [interactions between nerves, muscles, and bones] which may include back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints, and headaches." It is also true that the benefits of chiropractic care extends further, as Doctors of Chiropractic may also council patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.
"There are many conditions people seek care for, many of the problems are caused by repetitive motions. We all see this nearly daily: from people texting and playing games on their phones, which has you looking down for prolonged periods of times, to the worker that does the same motion for years. We also treat many acute injuries, from injuries at home to athletic injuries."
Dr Duroe uses many different techniques in his office, ranging from hands-on treatment to instrument adjusting along the neck, spinal column, hips, arms, hands, legs and feet.
Adel Chiropractic also offers Near Infrared Light Therapy. Exposure to Near Infrared Light has been shown to stimulate healing at a cellular level, systematically. NASA research has found that NIR Therapy can reduce inflammation and pain while triggering growth and regeneration in the cells.
Dr Duroe wants readers to know that chiropractic visits may be more affordable than we think, as treatments usually take 10-20 minutes. Adel Chiropractic also accepts many forms of insurance. Clients can rest assured that Dr. Duroe's goal is to help people live well.
"I feel one of the major misconception about chiropractic services is that chiropractors want you to keep coming back for [unnecessary] treatments. When treatment is started, the Doctor wants to monitor response to treatment, making sure the treatment provided is helping to stabilize or resolve the condition."
Dr Duroe is happy to share his passion for health and wellness with Adel and encourages residents to shop local for goods and services as often as possible.
"Keep in mind that, about ones health and healthcare, the choices are ultimately that of the patient's seeking the care. We as doctors try to create an environment within the body to stimulate healing."
Adel Chiropractic hours are by appointment only. If you would like to schedule a meeting with Dr Duroe discuss your health and wellness concerns, please call (515) 993-3664.

Recipe - Shredded Dagwoods
Before the days when sandwich shops were on every corner, we used to make our own party subs for picnics and family events. I would buy a fresh loaf of Italian Bread, kid-friendly cold cuts (bologna, turkey, roast beef and ham were always crowd pleasers) and every type of sandwich condiment you could imagine. I'd spring for what the girls called "fancy cheese" (aka swiss cheese) and smoked provolone to go with the cheddar. The girls would each take a station, prepping and cutting vegetables as I organized each ingredient into an assembly line. I passed on the finer points of sandwich making, just like my Grandmother taught me: "yes, there is a wrong way to make a sandwich!" "Cheese goes on the bottom to keep the bread dry." "A small amount of mustard goes a long way." "There is a big difference between mayonnaise and salad dressing." And the most important detail of all, "deli meat should be so thin you can read the paper though it." The girls loved putting the sandwich together, and as the sandwich grew taller and taller, their eyes bigger and bigger. The finished product always looked picture perfect. It was a meal we could all enjoy, from start to finish. In honor of Father's Day, a sandwich recipe that is kid-tested and Dad approved! Shredded Dagwoods:
Ingredients: Meats:
16 oz. Deli Ham (thinly sliced) 16 oz. Chicken Breast (thinly sliced) 16 oz. Roast Beef (thinly sliced) 16 oz. Smoked Turkey (thinly sliced) 4 oz. Pepperoni 4 oz. Summer Sausage (thinly sliced)
Cheeses: 8 oz. Smoked Provolone (thinly sliced) 8 oz. Sharp Cheddar (thinly sliced) 4 oz. Swiss (thinly sliced) Note: Havarti works as a Swiss substitute.
Italian Bread, sliced horizontally into Top and Bottom portions. Romaine Lettuce, rinsed and dried Tomato Red Pepper Yellow Pepper Sliced Olives (Black, Green and or "Exotic") Vidalia Sweet Onion Cucumber (thinly sliced) Brown Mustard Italian Dressing Salt/Pepper
Note: This is the basic layout, substitute or add Mayo, Bacon, assorted Cheeses, etc. to your taste.
Directions: 1. Prepare your vegetables. All should be rinsed, dried, and thinly sliced.
| Kitchen Tip: For a tender, restaurant-style sandwich, remove the crunchy triangular stem from the center of each lettuce leaf.
2. Stack individual slices of deli meat on top of the other; roll up.
3. Slice the meat rollup into pinwheels. Using your hands, toss pinwheels to combine.
4. Cut cheese squares into triangles.
5. Build your sandwich as follows:
a. Line Bottom half of bread with cheese, alternating Cheddar and Swiss.
b. Top cheese with Lettuce, Red Pepper, Yellow Pepper, Cucumber and Onion.
c. Pile Meat onto sandwich, spread evenly from end to end.
d. Drizzle Italian Dressing over sandwich.
e. Spread thin coat of Mustard on Top half of bread, add sliced Olives to inside top of bread, then stack.
6. Slice sandwich into 6-8 even pieces

Tori's Angels Benefit - June 24th
Make plans to attend a l uncheon and silent auction fundraiser on June 24th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm benefiting Tori's Angels in support of Mara Nevins and her family.
Tori's Angels Foundation is based out of Panora and raises funds to support the families of children who have life-threatening medical conditions in Iowa.
The idea of Tori's Angels Foundation began in July 2010 with a community breakfast fundraiser to assist with medical expenses of then five-year old Tori, who has had multiple heart surgeries.
The fundraiser was so successful that the idea of the foundation to help other children with life-threatening medical conditions was born. Tori's Angels Foundation was created in June 2011 and was named for the community "angels" who generously supported Tori.
Tori's Angels is run solely by volunteers. There are no paid employees within the organization so 100% of the contributions made go to the families. The Foundation pays for all medical expenses not covered by insurance, including travel expenses to treatment (airfare or mileage, hotels, meals), co-pays, deductibles and prescription medicine. Tori's Angels Foundation currently supports 21 area children and their families. The luncheon and silent auction benefit on June 24th at ADM High School will highlight 4 year old Mara Nevins of Adel who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for anaplastic empendymoma, an aggressive brain tumor. Mara underwent a surgery in December to resect the brain tumor and then had 33 rounds of radiation in Iowa City before beginning chemotherapy treatment at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. All the money raised at the event will go to support Tori's Angels Foundation. If you would like to donate an item for the silent auction, please contact Erin Sedars at 515-975-3995 or drop off at Adel Family Dentistry at 1202 Greene Street during regular business hours. View "Tori's Angels-Mara Nevins" flyer for additional information. Tori's Angels is a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit charity, so donations made are tax deductible as allowed by law.

Terry Reviews Adel's Fiesta Mexican Restaurant
Terry Traveler here to tell you about the new happening spot on the historic downtown square in Adel- Fiesta Mexican Restaurant at 815 Main Street. Now, you know I take my food seriously. A defined palette like mine can be hard to please so trust me when I say, I love this place. Since the restaurant opened, I have become one of the regulars for lunch and dinner. The service is always fast and friendly; I often get my lunch to go in less than 10 minutes. Each visit the restaurant has been packed with happy families and dates, yet the restaurant has a fast turn around so your wait is typically only moments. My all-time favorite dish is the C arnitas Tacos- three generous soft-shell tacos made with roasted, seared pork that is flavored to perfection. The tacos are topped with diced vegetables, sliced avocado and cilantro and the dish is served with a side of beans. Make sure to try the mild green salsa that comes with; it makes the dish sing. If you're really hungry, order the Carnitas- basically the same meal except you get even more of that awesome pork, yummy rice, beans, and all the fixings to build your own tacos. I've also tried the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas which were great in all their sizzled goodness, and the beef chimichanga which was two full meals in one. If you're a fan of free chips and salsa before your meal they've got you covered, and they make the best margaritas in town. Each visit I think I will try something new- every plate my friends try looks delicious- but I keep going back to those perfect tacos. I'm telling you: Totally Awesome. This is Terry Traveler reminding you to think Adel first when you've got a hankering and try the new class-act in town, Fiesta Mexican Restaurant! - TerryFiesta Mexican Restaurant815 Main St. * Adel, Iowa 50003 Phone: (515) 993-4404 Facebook: FiestaAdel Hours: 11:00am - 10:00pm

I love wearing simple sandals to outdoor events but I hate what they do to my feet, ankles, legs, hips, and posture for days following. Each season I hunt for good shoes, but it seems like an impossible mission. The shoes either look good and kill my feet, or the shoes feel like a dream and look like a nightmare. Let's be honest, sometimes, style wins over comfort. So, how do we address the issue of sandals, heels, and flip-flops? Here are Studio Q 360's Top 10 Ways to Survive Summer Sandals. 1. Find the best compromise you can. If you absolutely must wear flip-flops, try a pair with a thick sole that strap around the heel. If you're only considering flip-flops, rethink twice and go with a pair of actual shoes/ sandals. Sandals that wrap around the ankle cause our foot to be more stabilized than in flip-flops, with a good sole to support our stride. 2. Admit the shoes are just for show. Don't torture yourself for wearing cute shoes, simply admit you'll need some time to heal post event and prepare accordingly. 3. Make sure to wear brand new shoes for approximately 4-6 hours the week before the event. New shoes require a period of adjustment. Short bursts wearing the shoes help acclimate your feet. 4. Take time to stretch your feet, ankles, and calves to help keep your muscles limber. Visualize your toes as the tip of a pen and spell out the ABC's in the air. This will rotate your foot and ankle in all directions. 5. Spread your toes. We often forget how important our toes are to achieve proper balance. After wearing tight shoes, wear toe separators for 5-8 minutes, like those used when painting your toenails. Or, slide your fingers between your toes or a few moments as your rock your toes back and forth, side to side. 6. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can lead to cramps, and you may be more prone to leg cramps due to the shoes. It always pays to stay hydrated! 7. After a long day of wearing the shoes, soak your feet in hot water with Epsom Salts for 5-10 minutes. The mix will help relax you and aid the body in self healing. 8. Put your feet up. If reclining in a chair or sleeping on your back, slide a pillow under your knees. Side sleepers: slide a pillow between your knees and ankles. Stomach sleepers should keep a pillow under their ankles. This will aid in keeping your hips stabilized and help prevent over stretching of the muscles throughout the legs and feet. 9. Go barefoot. Walking around in the grass barefoot helps strengthen your feet and ankles. After a long day of wearing terrible shoes, going barefoot immediately may be uncomfortable. Instead, elect to go barefoot whenever possible the week before/after the event. 10. Get a massage! After a long day, weekend, or trip wearing cute but deadly shoes, book a massage. Take a moment to relax as your toes, feet, ankles, legs, and hips are treated to healing touch. A full body massage can help address any postural changes made from wearing the shoes and help reduce muscle fatigue. Katrina Brocka, LMTStudio Q 360
