"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 99 January 2017
It's a New Year! A time to reflect on where we've been and what's ahead. As a kid most of my TV involved the future. Well, we're seventeen years into the 21st century and I still don't have a flying car. I have a Dick Tracy wrist watch, a phone with more computing power than NASA had to land a man on the moon, but no flying car.

Seriously, I'm not sure I'd trust a flying car, especially after trying to navigate traffic this last Christmas while shopping. To be honest, I'm pretty happy living in a 100 year old home, walking to work, and a community that I love. Our kids are healthy, our Grandkids a hoot, and I'm looking forward to the adventures of 2017!

We had the opportunity to talk with Kirk Reisetter of KRpentry in about his love of custom wood working.

We have a busy January planned for Adel. So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel. May your New Year be a great one!

Kirk Reisetter - KRpentry

This month we spoke with Owner Kirk Reisetter of KRPentry Custom Woodworking in Adel, Iowa about his love of custom carpentry.

Quality craftsmanship makes every project a centerpiece. Dovetail joints, real wood, lacquered finish, and select hardware creates heirlooms.

Kirk Reisetter has lived in Adel most of his life, and most of his life his father has been remodeling their family home.

"When we moved in, he picked up a hammer. That's where I learned most of my woodworking skills, working on that house with him. He kept on going and I kept on learning."

Jewelry Box: 1' cube, front half and top open for access to interior and mounted mirror. Dovetailed Walnut with wood-burnt heart and lettering on lid. Inserts with foam/felt ring/earring trays.
In college, Kirk continued to learn fine carpentry skills working on theater sets. His friends took note when he made a modular loft to accommodate his dorm room. Soon Kirk was designing for others.

It was while creating a jewelry box with fine detailing that Kirk first realized the wide scope of woodworking he could accomplish and started his carpentry business.

KRPentry Custom Woodworking has completed decks, home remodeling, rough carpentry, practical furniture for homes and offices, and decorative heirloom pieces.

Kirk is especially excited about a turn of the century Craftsman House he is helping to restore.

A Craftsman House refers to homes built using blueprints and supplies available through the Sears and Roebucks catalog. Ads from the 1930's boasted a "10-room residence could be built and finished for just $3000." Simpler homes started at $725. Builders took pride in constructing their very own dream home.

"They are beautiful houses with lots of woodwork. This particular house is from 1908 and has steam bent railings, which I hadn't seen prior to 1930; it just wasn't popular. I'm looking at this house and thinking, 'wow its ahead of it's time!' It is a real treat to work on."

KRpentry - Adel Iowaa
Deck_stairs: Created extra-wide steps and stair for a home that had a long terrace.
Replaced railing of deck adjoining house. Treated pine.

As the Adel housing market booms, Kirk reminds house hunters it is important to invest in a quality home. "People are getting frustrated with cheap furniture that falls down. They spend $20 on a bookshelf, and then buy it again a year later, and again. Instead, clients ask me to design a built-in cabinet or bookshelf that will last and increase the value of their home."

KRpentry - Adel Iowaa
Bed frame: can break into quarters for easy movement. Structure of 2x4 pine, facing and drawers of solid red oak. Dovetailed drawers, collapse-able slats for easy movement.

KRPentry Custom Woodworking is proud to offer home and business clients the ability to design pieces to their exact specifications. To that end, Kirk uses SketchUp, a 3D imaging program.

The software enables Kirk to create concept designs that give the client a clear picture of his first impressions. Far better than blueprints or simple sketches, this creates a communication bridge between the carpenter and the client that helps to ensure the final product is exactly what everyone has in mind.

"Your needs, your space, your aesthetic, your life. I can't say it better than that. Everything I've sold I've been proud of; I would never sell something I'm not proud of. It may take a little longer, that's because the personal attention to detail makes each project a centerpiece."

The Village at the Pointe
New Year's Resolutions for all Ages

Residents at The Village at Legacy Pointe are showing New Year's resolutions are a good way to motivate yourself at any age.

Our residents didn't just go with the usual New Year resolutions to exercise and lose weight.

For example, Maxine Fulton has resolved to "learn to play guitar and visit Freedom Rock."

Patricia Farris' resolution is a simple one, to "go shopping for yarn." MJ Dungan has vowed to spend more time with animals, resolving to "play more with dogs."

The Villages at Legacy Pointe
"We're excited to help our residents with their resolutions both large and small," said Amy Barth, Executive Director at The Village at Legacy Pointe,

"Having goals and commitments for the new year adds a spice to life and gives us all a little more to aim for. 2017 will be a fun year ahead."  For more information contact:

Strengthening Families Program
Workshop Offers Guidance for Parents of Pre-teens

The Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP: 10-14) is coming this January to DeSoto, Iowa.

This seven-week series offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach helps families build skills in communication, problem-solving and stress-coping techniques.

Parent education includes setting limits from a loving place, appropriate consequences, effective monitoring of youth behavior, understanding the basis of misbehavior along with strengthening relationships.

Youth have much to gain from SFP: 10-14, too. They learn how to set goals and avoid obstacles that could stop them from achieving their goals. Youth topics also include coping with stress, resisting peer pressure and appreciating parents. In the second half of the session, families unite and solidify lessons through fun, interactive games and activities.

"One thing I love about the program is you do it together. It's not just for parents. The youth participate as well," said Lisa Mickelson, extension educator and program facilitator. "Sometimes with the stresses of everyday life, you just don't have time to relax and enjoy your family, and this program allows families to carve out time to get to know themselves and one another a little better."

Strengthening Families will be held at the Adel DeSoto Minburn Intermediate School in DeSoto on Sundays, Jan. 15-March 5 (no class Feb. 5) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with a free meal at 5 p.m. Cost for the series is $15 per family with free child care for younger kids.

For more information or to register contact Mickelson at (515) 993-4281 or lmickel@iastate.edu. A full class topic schedule can be found at www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas

Community Visioning Program

Adel is one of 10 Iowa communities that have been selected to participate in the Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning program in 2017.

The award-winning program integrates technical landscape planning and design techniques with sustainable community action to assist community leaders and volunteers in making sound and meaningful decisions about the local landscape.

The other 2017 visioning communities are Clarion, Granger, Greene, Humboldt, Lester, Massena, Morning Sun, Scranton, and Varina.

Since 1996, 235 Iowa communities have benefited from the Community Visioning program. To qualify for the program, a community must have a population of fewer than 10,000 residents, existing transportation-related issues and a committee of volunteers willing to dedicate their time and talents to the visioning process.

The Community Visioning program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa State University Landscape Architecture Extension and Trees Forever, an Iowa-based nonprofit environmental advocacy organization. In addition, professional landscape architects offer expertise in creating conceptual design plans for the communities.

Amy Lucht committee member states "We have so many great things to offer here in Adel; from our amazing schools, charming neighborhoods, and great locally owned businesses to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, neighborhood parks, and recreational activities along the Raccoon River.  The Community Visioning project provides an amazing opportunity to assist in showcasing those great attributes in a comprehensive and cohesive plan. We're extremely honored and excited to be a part of this project! "

The Village at Legacy Pointe
Festival of Trees is Wonderfully Festive - Village at Legacy Pointe

Thirteen Christmas trees could be found throughout The Village at Legacy Pointe this holiday season for their eighth annual Festival of Trees.

The trees were decorated by residents, staff and local vendors, all vying for votes to become the community's favorite tree.

Festive treats including cookies, fudge and hot cider were enjoyed by those voting while Christmas music played in the background. "Beautifully decorated trees and music really bring out the Christmas spirit," said resident, Gene Lankford.

"Everyone did such a fantastic job decorating the trees in creative and surprising ways," said Amy Barth, Executive Director at The Village at Legacy Pointe. "This event really brings out the festive holiday spirit in our community."

ISU Women Managing Cattle
Women Managing Cattle Workshop

 What is Women Managing Cattle?

 A four-session course focusing on cow/calf and beef feedlot decisions. January 11, January 18, January 25 and February 1, 2017. Meal 5:30 pm, class 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

More farm women in Iowa raise beef cattle than any other type of livestock or poultry. While 85% of Iowa beef farms market less than 100 head annually, the profitability of the cow/calf herd or beef feedlot impacts family finances significantly.

Whether women just want to learn more about Iowa's beef industry, or need to find more profitability from their family cattle business, this course offers something for everyone.

Sessions cover marketing strategies and managing land and water resources. Women will discuss the challenges in bringing calves to market and calculate the true costs of production.

Tools and resources will be provided to help women consider important management decisions.

Recipes From Home
Recipe of the Month -
Stuffed Peppers

Its the start of a new year, and the start of a new diet plan at home. My daughters keep telling me, "its not a diet, it's a lifestyle" but something about that phrase makes me want a plate of ribs with extra sauce.

So, in order to keep my New Year's resolution for more than a day, I'm sticking with calling it a diet plan.

The plan is simple- eat more vegetables, eat at regular intervals, and cut out prepackaged frozen foods. The prepackaged foods are the real kicker- sometimes its just easier to bake a pan of coconut shrimp and french fries, pop open a can of green beans, and call it good. The true appeal is that I don't have to think ahead.

In honor of this new diet plan, and the countless households making the same resolution, we offer our version of Stuffed Peppers.

Stuffed Peppers
Ingredients:
4 Large Bell Peppers
Kitchen Tip: Choose green peppers for a hearty bite, choose red or yellow peppers for a softer and sweeter finished product.

1 C. Brown Rice, cooked and chilled.
Kitchen Tip: Chilling the rice will help retain its consistency once baked.

1 Onion, minced
2 cloves Garlic, minced
1/2 C. Black Beans, rinsed and drained
1 Jalapenos, diced
1 stalk Celery, minced
1/2 C. Spinach, chopped
1 T. Salsa
1/2 C. Shredded Cheese
1 tsp. Cumin
1 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes
1 tsp. Onion Powder
1 tsp. Paprika
1 tsp. Chili Powder
Directions:
1. To prepare peppers, rinse and wipe clean. Cut off the cap and clean out the seeds.

2. Select a small, shallow baking dish and ensure your peppers will fit once filled and placed. If the pan is too large, the peppers will fall over and cook unevenly.
Kitchen Tip: If you can't find the perfect pan, create cup holder rings out of tinfoil support the bell peppers.

3. Grease pan with Cooking Spray or Olive Oil.
In a large bowl combine Rice, Onion, Black Beans, Jalapenos, Celery, Spinach, Salsa, and Shredded Cheese. Sprinkle with Spices, stir to combine.

4. Spoon mixture into Bell Peppers. Stack in baking dish; add 2 TBSP Water to the dish, cover with foil.

5. Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes, or until peppers are fork tender. Let rest, uncovered, for 5 minutes after cooking.

Enjoy!
Terry Traveller
Terry's Thoughts on Fame

The other day I realized what my vast fame had made of me. There was the money, in all its colors and currencies.

The notoriety as the one and only Terry Traveler. And the ability to name drop clumsily those with whom I've shared conversations and because I am vastly famous, it is social acceptable to do so. Shout out to my man, Bob Vila!

But it had also brought the endless groupies, paparazzi, and frustrating hours spent convincing gas station clerks to accept foreign currencies. Travel journalist fame can really open some doors but in the end, all I've ever wanted was a place to call home.

I am happy to be here in Adel- this quiet place where I can walk amongst you without being taunted for autographs or those selfie pictures. I know you want desperately to ask and yet you have the decency to let me be. Here, I live among you in harmony.

Let me tell you that is an honorable trait, shared by the community, that makes me love it so. That is the Adel charm we hear so much about. So thank you Adel, for letting me just be me.

This is Terry Traveler saying: think of me as Sasquawatch; you can brag that you saw me buying milk and you can swear it was 2%, but your friends won't believe a word of it.
