Fareway Foods – Adel, Iowa

Fareway Foods Adel Iowa

The first Fareway Store opened in Boone, Iowa in 1938 with the simple purpose of providing good jobs, good food, and great service to happy customers. Over the past 74 years more than 100 stores across the Midwest have kept this idea alive.

And now, Adel is proud to become part of that history and the future it brings with it. This month DiscoverAdel spoke with the cheerful employees that are the backbone of this new addition to the community.

True to small town tradition, the local grocery store has always been a perfect fit to bolster local employment and community growth.

In the spirit of Fareway’s employee first values, the company is one of the largest employers in Iowa and has already given a boost to the Adel economy.

Open from 7am – 9pm Monday- Saturday, the store is energetic with the lively bustle of hard workers and pleased clientele. On Sunday’s the store is dark- one of the few remaining companies that feels everyone deserves a day off.

Angela Fitzgerald Fareway Foods Adel Iowa
Angela Fitzgerald

Assistant Store Manager Angela Fitzgerald states, “Customer service is key. That’s the most important thing about Fareway- the people are what matter most.”

Customers notice firsthand how dedicated the store is to making their shopping experience the best it can be.

Customers are guaranteed to find fresh, top quality produce available year round, with locally grown items available seasonally.

The Adel location proudly carries local wine from the Penoach Winery, milk from the Sheeder Cloverleaf Dairy in Guthrie Center, and coming soon, Deardorff sweet corn.

Well-trained staff members are available to help you select the best product to suit your needs and your budget. The store is also adapting to customer needs, providing healthy alternatives as food allergies become more prevalent- look for the selection of Gluten Free products towards the front of the store.

As part of the Management Training Program, Angela has worked in 5 different Fareway stores for the past 14 years, learning the ropes and meeting new people.

She enjoys the opportunity to get to know the regular shoppers and experience the differences between Iowa’s communities.

Angela is looking forward to becoming part of Adel. “Adel is a good small town. It’s close to Des Moines and still has that small town feel.

I haven’t had the chance to shop around much because we’ve been so busy!”

Carolyn Kirby Fareway Foods Adel Iowa
Carolyn Kirby

“Honking busy!” as cashier Carolyn Kirby puts it. In the past month alone the store has already exceeded the company’s expectations, become a beacon for those in Adel and throughout Central Iowa who seek a great small town shopping experience.

The store can boast visitors who have driven nearly 40 miles for it’s remarkably clean interior, dedicated staff, and low, competitive prices.

Carolyn has worked in the grocery industry for 2 years and can’t contain her pride for the store. “I love this store, and the customers do too…the prices are low and everyone is so nice and great to work with. The employees work hard and Fareway appreciates its customers. This town is very people oriented- [Fareway] couldn’t have found a better place or people. Adel is an awesome fit for us and let me tell you, we’re here to stay!”

In each isle a helpful team member is stocking shelves, ready to help you find any item on your list. The meat department is fully staffed, divided between customer service and preparations to keep the counter stocked. At check out you will be greeted by happy faces as one team member rings the items, another is busy sacking, and a third person is at the ready to push the cart out to your car and load your bags into the trunk for you. Making for an enjoyable shopping experience from start to finish.

The company is not only dedicated to the community, but also the environment. Long before “going green” was trendy, Fareway was cutting edge. In 1955 the company began heating stores by reclaiming the heat generated by the refrigeration compressors. This initiative lead to efforts that today include recycling 12,500 tons of cardboard, 850,00 pallets, 300 tons of plastic shrink wrap, and 4,500,000 plastic grocery sacks per year!

When Fareway decided to open in Adel, the community knew what to expect because of the store’s positive reputation of providing a “fair way” to do business. Scuttlebutt rang throughout town- high quality items at affordable prices right in our own back yard. Conversations came to a momentary halt as everyone salivated at the thought of Fareway’s well-known, well-stocked produce and meat departments. Fareway Stores knew Adel would be a great fit because of our reputation of strong community pride and support. And in the few short weeks the store has been open, it’s safe to say this match was most certainly made in Heaven- or at least, Iowa.
