Dr. Barbara Scheetz – Adel Vision Clinic
This month we spoke with Optometrist Dr. Barbara Scheetz of the Adel Vision Clinic, located on the historic downtown square.
Opened in February 2019, the Adel Vision Clinic offers family eye care and optometric services such as comprehensive vision examinations, glasses, lenses, and contacts.
Owners and Optometrists Dr. Barbara Scheetz and Dr. Lucas Bell saw potential in Adel, noting that the town’s growing population would be benefited by a local vision center.
In 1997 Dr. Scheetz was appointed by the governor to be a member of the Iowa Board of Optometric Examiners, which she was a part of for nine years. In 1998, Barbara received “The Young Optometrist of the Year Award” for the state of Iowa. The award is given to an optometrist who shows leadership, dedication, and commitment to the profession.
Dr. Scheetz also notes that certain medical conditions such as Pink Eye, Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid and lashes), and Styes can be diagnosed and treated at the Clinic.
The Adel office specializes in diagnosing vision problems for patients of all ages. Blurred vision, difficulty seeing objects near or far, eye strain related to screen time or brightness, headaches, migraines, and dryness can all be signs of conditions which could impact your vision.
In the cases of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration early detection is key to retaining your eyesight.
Dr. Scheetz and Dr. Bell agree that regular screenings are vital, with comprehensive vision exams often.
Screenings are not an eye exam, rather the first line of defense. People are asked to read a set of letters and letters. This determines a simple baseline for Driver’s License exams, free in-school screenings, and general physicians. If you find it blurry or hard to read, its best to have a Vision Evaluation.
Vision Evaluations check your ability to see colors, distances, and depth. They also test muscle movements, peripheral or side vision, and how the pupil responds to light. The condition of the eye and its parts are also viewed to note any buildup, inflammation, pressure, cloudiness, or sensitivity.
“The retina is one of the most highly metabolic organs in your body. Every time light comes into your eye, your retina fires off, and your brain interprets it as vision. That’s a lot of reactions and metabolic changes, so its important to check your retina. The eye has lots of blood vessels, so with diseases that impact blood vessels like diabetes, we are checking for broken blood vessels. You can have problems with your vision and not know it.”
