Terry Traveler – Ode to the River
It is I, Terry Traveler, poet.
The other day, I sat upon a bridge and dreamed. Words floating through my head like a song and now present to you my Ode to the River.
This is Terry Traveler saying, drive on fellow beatniks.
“The river flows, cutting curves through stone, in the endless churn of life.
The dark waters run deep and fast, toppling over themselves on a race across ever changing paths.
The river is blind to the scenery, pulled along in mystery, along lush banks of stunning beauty it will never know it’s missing.
The river goes, it ebbs and flows, and falls to meet the rocks below, thinking nothing of the dive, just of the drive to get where it goes.”

DeSoto Sesquicentennial Anniversary – June 23 2018
Originally published in the Discover Adel Newsletter, Vol. 116 June 2018.
This month we are honored to share a brief history of DeSoto, drawn from the book, “The History of DeSoto: From Iron Horse to Horseless Carriage,” as we join our sister community in celebration of their Sesquicentennial Anniversary, June 23rd 2018!
In the late 1860’s when the railroad began connecting Iowa’s western and eastern borders, land was donated for the purpose of creating a small town along the line. Thomas Hemphill, J.J. VanMeter, and Hugo G. VanMeter donated the land that, according to legend, was named DeSoto in honor of a local Rock Island Railroad official.
10 years later, the population had grown to 600 people. The town took great pride when they built a new two story brick building for the DeSoto Independent School. Shop owners offered essential supplies and luxuries to those working the rails, including dry goods, lumber and grain, stock and poultry dealers, furniture, jewelry, insurance, hotels, and more.
In the years to follow, DeSoto would rise from the ashes of several serious fires that affected the railroad, community businesses, and homes across town. Each time, the community would rally together. As transportation progressed and highway projects began, the landscape of DeSoto changed with the times.
In 1910, DeSoto became part of the White Pole Road, also known as “The Great White Way: Best Marked Road in the United States”.
Touted as “Iowa’s straightest, shortest, best built, best kept, most popular highway from river to river through Des Moines,” the White Pole Auto Club maintained the stretch of road that can still be followed today as it enters DeSoto from the east on Spruce Street and then west on Willow.
As the Depression set hold, the people of DeSoto were known for their generosity of spirit, sharing whatever they could with those less fortunate as they rolled through town.
With only a handful of businesses remaining, most residents worked on farms, at a soybean plant in Redfield, or helped pave Highway 169.
In 1940, DeSoto elected Beatrice Bootsto become their first female mayor; she served for two years.
When Highway 169 was paved in 1951, a wave of prosperity lead to business development along the highway as well as city water. Over the next 10 years, as highways continued to change the landscape of small town Iowa. The school was always highly regarded for its excellent education and sports programs. Effective August 20th, 1966 DeSoto consolidated with Adel, continuing a rich tradition of educational excellence.
Over the next 50 years, the population of DeSoto would continue to ebb and flow as businesses opened and closed, new housing developments were built, and improvements were made to the town’s infrastructure.
Today, DeSoto is home to a family-friendly community of 1,065 people, with a strong economic base. New businesses, both locally-owned and franchised, are being drawn by the easy access to major interstates and highways, offering needed services to a growing residential community.
DeSoto is home to AHeinz57 Pet Rescue, a local organization with ties across Iowa, Ambro’s Roadhouse, a new restaurant and bar, The Vic Shop, an independent, Victory Motorcycle enthusiast shop that draws customers from around the country, the recently built Tractor Supply Co., and many more.
As our neighbors and members of the Adel DeSoto Minburn school district, the DiscoverAdel.comcommunity sends their congratulations and well wishes to those who have taken part in DeSoto’s vibrant history and prosperous future.

Terry Traveler – Back Roads
Hello fellow road warriors! Terry Traveler here, and recently, I’ve been hitting the back roads of our fair county. It is an experience unlike any other.
I love driving out of town, finding gravel roads, and suddenly feeling whisked away with time. Dilapidated barns span undeveloped rolling vistas and open skies.
Farm animals are more common than people; I find their conversations far more engaging than that of the farmers who seem destined to ask, “why are you talking to my cows?”
Because, Sir, they have more to say than you think.
On sunny, warm days the backroads call. I sit back and listen to nature, until I listen to classic rock. I drive slowly- many of you have passed me by on your way to important places, I get it, you’ve got deadlines and such- but as I have no agenda and no master, I simply enjoy the drive.
As we enter May and the weather finally changes from dark, grey days to those filled with sunshine, I implore you to take the opportunity to go for a drive. Away from town and predetermined destinations, slowly meander along old two-lane roads onto gravel paths and breath in the country air.
This is Terry Traveler saying, drive safely, my friends.

Terry Traveler – Birdhouse
Today, dear readers, Terry is here to talk about that number one essential travel tool- the Walkman. Oh, you jest with your Laser Discs and EarPods, but nothing represents the free, world traveler, like a Walkman.
One album with two sides that you must listen to in order, through every step of your journey or until your batteries die. That’s deep, man.
Yes, it is the Walkman that gets us Travelers out the door. I’ve checked all the pockets of my parka, triple counted the foreign currency in my sock. I’ve put my pack on my back, my sunglasses on my head, and wrapped my ears in the soft styrofoam of cheap headphones. But I haven’t clicked the “Play” button.
For the kids, a button was a plastic rectangle that when pushed, locked into place with a satisfying Click. Not a swipe and swoosh, or robotic voice saying they didn’t understand you, a loud Click. Pressing that “Play” button means I’m headed out into the world once again, and there’s no stopping me now.
I wrangle my way down the street singing my songs, grooving to the music, watching the world go by, each step moving me on and on. From here to there. To everywhere. All to the rhythm of a little bird house in my soul. (Listen, dear readers, to the sounds of your world, as I see it.
Welcome to April, my friends!

DC 4-H and Clover Kid Clubs Connect with Older Iowans Through Service
Courtesy of the Dallas Co Extension Office
On April 7, Dallas County 4-H and Clover Kids Clubs held a countywide service learning project event at the Dallas County Fairgrounds community building focused on serving the county’s older Iowans.
More than 185 Dallas County residents attended to see how local 4-H’ers have been engaging with local nursing, retirement homes or residents in independent living situations.
Organizations offering services to older Iowans were also available for attendees to learn more about resources available to their families.
Waukee resident Joan Kaas attended the event after hearing about the service learning project and the involvement of Dallas County 4-H. “I raised eight children on 80 acres outside of Waukee. I was a Dallas County 4-H leader back in 1973. I love 4-H and wanted to come to this event to see what our 4-H youth were doing in Dallas County,” Kaas said. “It was great visiting with them about their projects. I also got information from the vendors on balance, Alzheimer’s and some other useful resources.”
Various clubs were present to showcase how they’ve been serving the older community. The Grimes Go Getters’ Sarah Capps shared how she makes tie blankets which she donates to local nursing homes. The Sugar Grove Sunshine club demonstrated how they assemble “Fidget Blankets”, with different sensory fabrics, zippers and textures, for Alzheimer patients. The Classy Clever Clovers displayed the valentines they made with an assisted living community, and the Machine Magicians showed off lit-up Christmas boxes they constructed and shared with residents at care facilities.
The 4-H youth and their parents staffed various craft tables, helping attendees made sock sundaes, cards and care packages to donate to local assisted living and nursing homes. Small prizes were also donated from community members and 4-H families for the clubs give to care centers for games like bingo.
Aging Resources, Alzheimer’s Association, Caregiver Connections, Warrior Lanes, HomeCare, Senior Life Solutions, Home Instead, Dallas County Public Health, Run Through Time and Iowa Elder Abuse Awareness had staff available to discuss what they can offer to Dallas County’s older residents. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach also had specialists presenting programs and educational resources on family life, nutrition and wellness programs.

Following the event Saturday, a 4-H Clover Kid family visited their elderly neighbor to give her a care bag and sock sundae. “We found out she will turn 94 this Friday. She said she had been sick and in pain for quite some time. We were able to help her empty trash, take clothes to the basement, sort some mail and even aid her while she wasn’t feeling the best,” said the family. “She was so tickled. One of the children helped her put the socks on and then massaged her feet. She said our timing couldn’t have been better and that God sent us! It was a wonderful experience for me and my children. She wanted some pictures of her and the kids. She told us stories and the kids ate up every word. They were so proud to go and take their goodies to her. She asked us to visit again and proudly declined every phone call saying she had visitors.”

BASE® Raises Money to Support ADM K-5 Reading Program
The staff at BASE® recently came together to help support the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn schools in providing funds for the ADM reading program.
During the month of February, BASE® employees challenged each other to see who could raise more money between two designated charities.
Win or lose, the staff from the Adel company felt like winners for being able to give back to the local youth in their community.
Laura Radebaugh, an employee at BASE®, shares why supporting her local community is important to her. “I think it is important for every business to support their communities. Local charities are a great way for us to be active in the community and do some good at the same time. I love when we help out the children in the community too,” she said.
With a strong emphasis on reading and writing, the ADM K-5 program will benefit greatly from the $800 donation from BASE® to support young readers in the area.
The money is going to support kids in grades K-5 who aren’t yet reading at grade level.
This money will provide these students with an opportunity to select their choice of books at their independent level from designated scholastic books to further enhance their reading skills.
The Principals for both the Adel Elementary and DeSoto Intermediate School shared their appreciation and noted the donation from BASE® being impactful to the ADM students. They shared how money from BASE® will directly benefit readers at Adel Elementary and DeSoto Intermediate Schools by getting books in kids’ hands.
DeSoto Principal, Jodi Banse, said, “The greatest way to build a reader is to increase the pages and minutes a child reads. The BASE® donation will provide students with books that they choose. We know that motivation is a key to reading and choice directly connects to that. Allowing students to keep these books allows them to read and reread the texts. Students are beyond excited to get new books!”
BASE® is happy for the ADM K-5 students who will directly benefit from these funds, and feel good knowing that it will make a long lasting impact on everyone in the schools as a whole.

Terry Traveler – Grand Canyon
Fellow travelers of the great wide world, it is I, Terry Traveler, here to tell you of another wonderful journey I took around this giant rotating orb of water and stone, plant and mineral, peoples being peoples.
My favorite spot in the whole of the world is no more than 3 feet wide. It is the perfect spot to stop, to look, to bask in warmth and light. It is merely a dusty rock, found amongst the tourists and hot dog stands of the rocky ledge of a canyon, great and wide.
It was one of my earliest expeditions, when my traveling companions made all the arrangements and I was left to read Highlights magazine. After days of driving cross country, we arrived at sunset to peer at what I had imagined would be a giant hole in the ground. How wrong I was.
I had never seen anything so vast- in all directions it spilled forth from that cliff where I stood shocked, nervous and aware. My eyes, young indeed, could not comprehend all the wonders at once.
How grand was this canyon, with the birds soaring and the winds singing and the colors saturating every rod and cone. I closed my eyes and saw the colors burnt into my retinas. I felt like I was standing on the edge of the earth and my knees give way. I sat on that rock and in doing so, felt akin to all that surrounded me, and in that moment, claimed my most favorite spot in the whole wide world.
Sitting near that ledge, on a rock at the end of the world, I saw bugs crawling in the dirt, weaving along the sides of rocks- like cliff hangers without safety ropes. It wasn’t the end of the world, I realized, it was just the beginning. Right there, in that three foot patch of dirt, was a perfect ecosystem where bugs and snakes and birds and bats and fish and coyotes and tourists and hot dog vendors lived in harmony, not fear, of the ledge. What a beautiful dance, what a perfect spot to view the whole of the great wide world.
Fellow travelers, it is the memory of that singular experience that drives me onward, seeking out new views and vistas, new life and new civilizations, those bold places I’ve never gone before. This is Terry Traveler saying, this Spring Break, may you seek the same.

Dallas County Extension and Outreach Receives RBFF Grant
Courtesy of the Dallas Co Extension Office
Adel, IA – (March 1, 2018) – Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) and the George H.W. Bush Vamos A Pescar™ Education Fund announced the grantees for 2018, marking the third round of grants for the Education Fund.
Local grantee Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach, Dallas County, will use this grant to bring fishing, boating and conservation experiences and education to Hispanic families in the Dallas County community.
“The future of fishing and boating depends on engaging younger, diverse audiences. We’re happy to provide such an amazing opportunity to help organizations in reaching the Hispanic market,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “And with state agencies matching the funds, the impact of each program is effectively doubled.”
“Emerging audiences, like Millennials and Gen X-ers are increasingly diverse, and the Hispanic population is expected to reach 65 million individuals by 2020,” added Peterson. “With this in mind, it’s imperative that our industry reach out to and include the Hispanic audience in marketing messages, communications and imagery.”
Executive Director ISU Extension and Outreach, Dallas County, Jeff Jackson said, “Our focus for these funds is reaching our Hispanic families in Perry, Iowa. We are developing a great program that engages all members of the family to help them learn that fishing is a low-cost activity that is fun for all ages, as well as an opportunity to support their food supplies.”
In 2014, Bass Pro Shops Founder and CEO Johnny Morris donated $125,000 to RBFF to start an Education Fund in honor of his friend, President George H.W. Bush’s 90th birthday. Soon after the George H.W. Bush Vamos A Pescar™ Education Fund was launched, other companies have come on board with their financial support.
The Education Fund carries out its mission of engaging Hispanic families across the United States in fishing and boating through hands-on experiences and conservation activities.
More information about the George H.W. Bush Vamos A Pescar™ Education Fund is available at takemefishing.org/educationfund. Learn more about how you or your organization can donate to the fund here.

Testimonials:
“We have used our Pure Wash for over two years and absolutely love it. Our cloths are cleaner and smell better. Without buying detergent and heating water our operating costs are way down.” – G. Jensen
“I love my Purewash system. I am a busy home based dog groomer. I use my washing machine daily with my Purewash system to clean my dirty dog towels. Using the Purewash system helps me save money by not using detergent while still delivering clean fresh smelling laundry.” – L. Jufffers
“We purchased the purewash system almost a year ago because I liked the idea of having no soap. Our daughters have really sensitive skin, and I knew that eliminating soap would help. I was however nervous as we live on a farm and children get DIRTY! Purewash has held up to the test of our family and exceeded all expectations. Lastly I’d like to mention cost….I am a penny pincher so it was painful to purchase, I’ll be honest. But if you put pencil to paper and figure out how much money your spending in detergent and other washing products in a year…and compare it to the longevity of the purewash system, you will end up being light years ahead with your money. It’s an easy, affordable system to put in place to simplify your routine, for your family’s health, with amazing results!!” -M. Fountas
“As most of you know I do not push product on Facebook or anywhere unless I totally believe in it. About 3 months ago, I struggled for several months with a huge nasty cough, sounded horrible like I had pneumonia, I would sit at the baseball games coughing, and I would come into work and cough cough cough. Go home and I would be fine. Keep in mind my whole life I have never had allergies. Well eventually after having a customer ask me to stay away from him because he didn’t want to catch whatever I had, I realized whatever this was, wasn’t good. So I talked to Tammy at Adel and they had just got in the items below “Pure Air Purification units.” We decided it would be a fantastic time to try one of these units out in my office. I came in on a Monday morning after having it going all weekend long and just walking in the store there was a significant change. The store felt and smelt fresh. The air was crisp and clean. Guess what no coughing what so ever. It really worked! I am not kidding. If I turn the machine off for a weekend and come back Monday, I start coughing, turn the machine on and within 30 minutes there is a huge difference. This machine looks small but it clears up to 1500 square feet of Air. I personally think it is worth every penny. There are many sizes of these units and I am about to test a smaller unit a “PureAir 250″ in Jacobs room at home. Jacob is the kid in our house who picks up every little strep throat/sickness/colds and coughs every morning and night. Pretty sure he has some allergies and probably living in our basement is probably susceptible to some mold or allergens of some sort. So keep watching out for the result of this one. I am pretty interested myself as to see if this helps him 100% like it did me.” – Robin Dick
“We live in De Soto, Iowa where our water is very hard. We do not have a water softener and decided to try the Water Genie. We have had it hooked up for almost 2 years now. We noticed a difference in a couple months after installing. Our coffee pot was not scummy anymore, on most things the hard water line was not present anymore. It doesn’t really soften the water like a water softener does but it lessens the hard water spots and lines. Would highly recommend this to everyone.” – B. Massure
