Raccoon River Valley Trail Inducted Into Rails-to-Trails
In August, Iowa’s Raccoon River Valley Trail was Inducted Into Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s National Hall of Fame after receiving a record-breaking 16,000 votes in the National 2021 Rail-Trail Hall of Fame contest!
Since opening in 1989, the trail has been a vital tourist attraction and embraced as an asset for health, wellness and connections among the region and state.
This 89-mile path – offering views of woodlands, prairies, public art and a unique “lighted bridge”—connects rural communities to larger cities, including Jefferson, Des Moines and Perry.
Plans are in the works to eventually connect the Raccoon River Valley Trail to the world-famous High Trestle Trail.
The trail is also an important segment of the cross-country Great American Rail-Trail™, a flagship project of RTC that will connect Washington, D.C., and Washington State across 3,700 miles of trail.
Today, more than 350,000 people use the trail annually, bringing economic opportunities and vitality to the 14 communities that dot the trail, much like the railroad did 150 years ago. Learn more about the trail at raccoonrivervalleytrail.org.

Bob & Nadine Law – 2021 Preservation at its Best Award
Each year the Adel Historical Preservation Commission recognizes a property owner for their efforts in preserving their historic property for future generations.
This year’s award goes to Bob and Nadine Law for 1210 Grove Street. This property is truly an Adel landmark.
In researching the property’s history, it appears to have been built after the war in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It was sold in March of 1888 to J.W. Russell and renovated later that year.
It was known as the “J W Russell Homestead” and was held in the family until March of 1946. Bob and Nadine Law acquired the property in July of 1987.
Through Bob and Nadine’s efforts to preserve the historical integrity, they obtained the original architectural drawings of both the initial construction and the renovation.
On behalf of the Adel Historical Preservation Commission and the City of Adel, we extend our thanks and sincere appreciation for Bob & Nadine’s efforts in preserving an Adel landmark for future generations.
Their personal time and commitment to researching the historical features of 1210 Grove, and to maintaining the property’s historical aesthetics is commendable.

Travis Parsons Memorial Dog Park Fundraiser
Travis Parsons Memorial Dog Park
Fundraiser – AHeinz57 Pet Rescue
There has been such an outpouring of love and a need for many of us to do something special in memory of Travis, that many of us are pitching in to create a large Dogs Playing for Life fenced area.
It will be a specific area to continue Travis‘s work with the dog playgroups.
These play groups give dogs a much needed break from the isolation of individual kennels they are living in. It also helps us learn their play styles and and more importantly, they teach each other how to behave around each other.
Dogs can learn things from each other that we just can’t teach them. This area will also have a few shaded areas with picnic tables and benches where volunteers can I hang out together and dog reunions can be held.
The entire area will be dedicated to Travis Parsons. We all think he would love this. Please Donate if you would like to be a part of it.
