Local Adel Company Raised $2,422 for John D. Gomke Charity
BASE® has been a local Adel employer for almost a decade and recently came together to support the John D. Gomke Charity.
The company currently employs 26 people and was able to raise $2,422 in roughly one week’s time to support the local charity.
The John D. Gomke Charity benefits organizations that assist in caring for and providing resources to sick infants and families who have lost infants in and around Central Iowa.
A business that is built on helping business owners across the country, BASE® offers portable benefit savings options to assist with the rising cost of healthcare with products like the BASE® HRA and BASE® 125 Cafeteria Plan.
BASE® was excited to be able to support a charity in their own community, especially a charity that has already given back to the community by using money raised to certify 80 people in CPR as well as purchase the AEDs for the Adel and DeSoto Elementary schools.
This charity has committed to the upkeep of all 3 AEDs in the schools and continues to help upgrade the community’s ability to save children’s lives, which made it pretty easy for BASE® employees to jump on board for such a great cause with many of the employees having children in the ADM school district.
BASE® is hoping to dedicate even more time to this fundraising event next year and hopes to top the $2,422 raised this year. BASE® presented Steve & Jessica Gomke, charity founders, with a check at a special dedication on July 15.
Jessica voiced her gratitude by saying, “Words cannot express how amazed we are by BASE® and the support they have shown John’s Charity! It is wonderful how much they give back to the community with their charity work. We are honored and hope to continue to grow our relationship with them for years to come”.

Lions Honor Fallen Soldier
Lions Honor Fallen Soldier
With very little pre-notice a group of 13 local Lions club members placed flags through Adel when it was learned that the Capt. Matthew G. Nielson funeral procession would travel through Adel Sunday en route to the Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter.
Nielson, 27, from Jefferson was killed in action June 29 in Iraq. His funeral was held in Jefferson.
Among those who placed the flags along Highway 169 south, were Jim Loynachan, Harold Smith, Jon MaAvoy, Tom Harblson, Kent McAdon, Keith Soffa, Darrell Bauman, DUsty Weeks, Larry Crannell, Ray Hempill, Jerry Roberts, Clay Porter and Tom Waltz.
Although the Lions had to use hammers and rods to drill holes in the ground for the flags, the group finished the task in about 15 minutes with time to spare before the procession moved through town.

Van and Bonnie – A Thank You To the Volunteers and Community
All,
On behalf of the City, thank you to all those who helped make today’s Van & Bonnie Show broadcast from Adel a huge success.
There was quite a display of Adel history, personalities and pride today and much work went into the fantastic showcase for our community.
Thanks to the Service Clubs; Adel Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis all lent a helping hand serving rolls and coffee. (I believe the Lions Club wins the prize for best volunteer turn out, but there were some pretty early rising Rotarians and Kiwanis).
A special thank you to event organizers Dean Westergaard, Linda Boettcher, and Jackie Orton and mastermind Tim Canney for all their work in orchestrating the morning’s activities. Also, a great big thanks to Greg Dufoe and the ADM School staff for use of the Commons, what a great place for this event.
There were also countless others lending a hand; from Patrick’s to Marie at Adel Flower and Gifts and Dan Juffer at Horizon Printing – thank you.
Adel was showcased in a big way today and it certainly was a community effort. Today was why we all choose to live in Adel.
Thank you all very much.

Adel Brick Street Rehabilitation Project Receives Award
Adel City Hall and McClure Engineering Company announced that the 2010 Brick Street Project in the Community has received the American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa (ACEC) Grand Place Award for first place in the transportation category.
The award recognizes excellence in engineering. Projects are selected based on the best examples of engineering achievements using criteria such as uniqueness and originality, and technical, economic and social value.
“The Adel project reflects uniqueness because of the nature of rebuilding 100 year old brick streets reusing the existing brick coupled with modern methods of sub-structure and utility work.” said project engineer Jeff Schug of McClure Engineering Company.
With Adel’s reputation as a historic community which prides itself on having some of the only brick streets listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reusing the brick was a key element in designing and building the downtown streetscape project.
Adel City Council member and Street Committee Chair Jon McAvoy said, “Not only are the brick historically valuable, but by reusing them we saved money and were environmentally responsible because we did not discard the old and purchase new brick. New brick would have cost about $350,000 more and we would have wasted all the old brick.”
The ACEC award is a unique honor for Adel and represents recognition of excellence in design and construction of a special approach to streetscape rehabilitation. The award will be presented on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Sheraton in West Des Moines.
Additional questions may be directed to City Administrator Chad Bird at City Hall at (515) 993-4525 or Jeff Schug, Project Engineer with McClure Engineering Company at (515) 964-1229.

Penoach Winery in Adel, Iowa
Reprinted from the February 2009 DiscoverAdel Newsletter
It was a natural choice for Stan Olson and his family to open the Penoach Winery, Vineyard and Nursery in Adel, where they have lived for 30 years.
The family owned winery was named after the original name for the area of Adel which means “Beautiful Place” or “Pleasant Valley.” The winery is known for its rustic character and fun, enjoyable atmosphere.
Located on a 1900 era farmstead with its 1917 converted barn, Penoach Winery offers a place for friends to gather and share the loveliness of Iowa’s landscape. Stan and his family strive to create a fun experience with a knowledgeable staff that can help you find that perfect bottle of wine.
One of the biggest advantages to opening the winery in Adel has been the fast growing community. Adel continues to grow and change, and the winery reaps the benefits of the renewed interest in wine that was swept across the nation in recent years. Adel also offers traditionally rich Midwest soil that supports cold hearty grape varieties, some of which are available through the Nursery.
The Penoach Nursery offers a wide selection of grape plants with various types of suitability. Some plants are great for the Adel area and surrounding community, while others are recommended for the warmer or colder climates of places like Oklahoma or Canada.
The Nursery ships all over the United States; Stan has shipped plants to Georgia and yes, even to Alaska!
The grape plants are used mainly for wine making, though some varieties can be used for table grapes. There is a full list of grape plants available on the Penoach Winery website, www.penoach.com, and all of the grape plants have been inspected by the Iowa Department of Land Stewardship.
There are many great wines at Penoach, but the best seller is called Briana, described as “a sweet luscious white wine with a hint of pineapple.” Briana is considered a varietal wine, which means it is primarily from a single named grape, in this case, Iowa’s own Briana grapes! Another crowd pleaser is the Apple wine. This autumn wine is made from locally grown apples from the Dallas County Orchard in Dallas Center.
Penoach Wine makes a great gift to give, with bottles available year round that can fit any budget. A full list of wines, descriptions and costs are available online at the Penoach Winery website.
Penoach Winery is part of the Heart of Iowa Wine Trail, which consists of 15 Iowa wineries spanning the entire state from Oskaloosa to Iowa Falls. Join the Penoach Winery for the Heart of Iowa Wine Trail’s Tropical Wine Festival Friday, February 6th 2009 between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM at the Des Moines Botanical Center!

An Interview with Short & Company, CPA, P.L.C.
Reprinted from DiscoverAdel Newsletter January 2009
January may seem dull after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but for some it is the beginning of an entirely new season, Tax Time.
By January 31st, everyone will receive their W-2s, 1099s, and other forms that are hard to understand. While most of us dread the April 15th deadline, our current economic turmoil has prompted the masses to file their taxes sooner. This year, let Short & Company handle all your tax needs!
Started in November of 1988 by John Short, CPA, Short & Company offers a wide variety of services related to Accounting, Insurance, Securities and Small Business consulting.
DiscoverAdel was able to sit down with John and Chris Oberreuter, CPA, who has been with the company for 15 years, to discuss the important questions this tax year presents as well as a new business addition to Adel!
Q. What are the differences between using Short & Company verses places like Jackson Hewitt?
A. There are dramatic differences between licensing and the requirements to stay licensed. John and Chris, both Certified Public Accountants or CPAs, are required 40 hours of continuing education a year whereas the representatives of other more commercial businesses are only required 6 hours. Short & Company is also open year round and available whenever a taxable event takes place.
Q. What licenses or designations do you have?
A. John Short is a licensed CPA and is also licensed to sell mutual funds, annuities and life and health insurance. Chris Oberreuter is a licensed CPA and is also licensed to sell stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, and life and health insurance. Denise Walter is a licensed CPA.
Q. What does a CPA do?
A. CPAs work with businesses and individuals on many financial related topics. This can range from keeping the books for a small company to auditing of major corporations to comply with SEC requirements. CPAs help individuals save tax dollars, help businesses obtain financing and save tax dollars, create business plans for businesses, and sometimes act as a chief financial officer for a small business.
Q. What do people need to bring with them for their appointment, what should they expect?
A. Appointments scheduled are 1-1 ½ hours long, possibly longer depending on the services needed. Make sure to keep track and bring all your records with you! Many people forget all of their 1099s and W-2s. These are produced due to taxable events or because of sources of income. This includes bank statements, college loan repayment, employment, and distributions from annuities, profit-sharing plans, retirement plans, IRAs, insurance contracts and/or pension plans.
Q. Are there deductions that people typically miss?
A. People tend to miss charitable donations made throughout the year. Make sure to get the receipt! Also, in the state of Iowa car licenses can be deducted. Most people forget or do not know it applies to them. Contact John or Chris to find out how this could impact your returns.
Q. Who needs to use the services of Short & Company?
A. Everyone can benefit from having a CPA file their tax returns. This year [2009] there have been six (6) tax law changes which can dramatically alter your returns, and we aren’t sure how the tax software will handle these changes. You want to have a CPA look over credit changes because you don’t want to miss deductions or credits. The problem with software is that you have to know how to answer the questions otherwise you can miss out. For example, due to flooding and severe weather this summer, much of Iowa is considered a Disaster Relief area, which means your physical location can change what credits or deductions you can file for.
Q. What suggestions can you provide during this period of financial strife?
A. Discuss your investments with a financial planner. Make sure your monitary plan is still solid and determine what is the best thing to do based on your personal situation. Remember that there are tax consequences for taking loans against your investments. Determine how these can affect you by contacting John or Chris.
Q. Another important issue is college planning as parents begin the Financial Aid process. What should parents know?
A. Start early! Once your children are in high school it is too late to plan for college. If you want your kids to go to college, start saving when they are young. 529 Plans are excellent tools for diligent, dedicated parents. However, the diligent can get burned when it comes time to fill out FAFSA forms. FAFSA is a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is how the federal government determines loans and grants. The forms considered the money parents and children make per year and in savings. Consider maxing out your 401ks or IRAs as they do not count towards FAFSA.
Make sure to stress academics to your children. Good grades can get you free money or scholarships to the college of your choice. Keep in mind that only 1% of high school students receive Athletic Scholarships. Top students have a wider college base to choose from and private colleges give out scholarships based not only on need, but grades and extra curricular activities.
The most important aspect of College Planning is knowledge. There are many resources available and parents need to be more active in seeking out advice. Short & Company is one of the valuable resources parents can use, and John and Chris are both available to provide more information.
So this year don’t wait in line for just any accountant, make an appointment to see the experts at Short & Company in Adel, Iowa!
