Photos of Check Presentation:

The John D. Gomke Charity (John’s Charity) has raised $20,000 over the past two years. Over $5,000 a year has gone to  John’s Bereavement Fund at Mercy.

This is the only infant and young child fund for the Pediactric ICU and the Pediatric ER to provide parents with Keepsakes. The Keepsakes are an essential part of the healing process for families who suffer the loss of a child.

They have also contributed four First Aid and Defibrillators(AED) in the last two years. The first year two AEDs were contributed to the ADM schools at the elementary school and at the Intermediate School.

Last year they contributed two AEDs to Nodaway Valley in Greenfield – again one for the elementary school and one for the middle school. Each year they also go back and replace the batteries, pads, accessories, etc. at the units donated the previous years.

This year they are hoping to contribute two AEDs to Panorama Schools and two to Guthrie Center Schools. In addition, some of the funds have gone to the CPR classes that have been taught to over 100 participants.

Their long-term goals are to provide AEDs to all of the schools in Dallas, Adair, Guthrie, and Madison Counties. They would also like to eventually be able to add a third AED to all schools for sporting events.

Jessica did say that some schools already do have AEDs but they are old and not compatible with the ambulances today. In addition to funding the John D Gomke Bereavement Fund at Mercy Hospital, they plan to eventually do the same at Blank Hospital.

Jessica voiced her gratitude by saying, “The Harrington’s are amazing people who are obviously great leaders and they share their values with their staff. John’s Charity is extrememly lucky to have such wonderful people and company supporting us! We can not tell them enough how much we appreciate all their support”.

John’s Charity will hold it’s 3rd Annual John’s Baby Steps 5K this October 13th at Kinnick-Feller Park in Adel at 8:00 a.m. with a tot trot and kids fun run at the end.

Photos From Adel Fareway Ribbon Cutting Opening Day

Fareway Adel Iowa

Folks from Adel, Earlham, Redfield, Desoto and Minburn turned out in full force to welcome Fareway to Adel Wednesday.

The parking lot was full by 9:30 a.m. for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Customers were already lining up outside to start shopping when the store opened at 10:00 a.m.

There is a  definite “Wow!” factor to the new store. From the spacious layout, fully stocked meat department, to the professional and friendly staff.

The store’s five checkout lanes ran nonstop through out the day as the checkers cheerfully greeted each customer. The sackers worked as a well practiced drill team as they delivered the groceries to each customers vehicle.

Be sure to stop out to the new store and get your “Wow.”

About the Firemark Award:

While fires are riddled with chaos and tragedy, they also spotlight the tremendous good displayed by our nation’s firefighters – good that is embodied by the selfless deeds of brave men and women who enter burning homes to save victims, or devote countless hours to educating families on fire prevention.

Liberty Mutual honors America’s firefighters with the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award. They are presented in two categories: the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Heroism and the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Community Service and Public Education.

History of the Firemark Award

Twenty years ago, Liberty Mutual began a local award program to recognize firefighters throughout the country who best represent their communities through courageous acts and who best demonstrate the firefighter’s selfless spirit.

Our award took its name from the “firemark” – a leaden plate in the form of a phoenix rising from the ashes, which American fire offices in the 18th and 19th centuries used to mark the houses they insured.

To this day, the firemark remains to us a symbol of the valor and selfless spirit of thousands of men and women – career and volunteer – who safeguard their communities.

About Liberty Mutual’s Commitment to Fire Safety

Liberty Mutual has more than 400 offices around the country that work closely with fire departments, schools and community organizations to conduct a variety of safety programs; many of which focus on fire prevention. We also invest significant resources into training our claims professionals and customers about fire safety and suppression systems.

In addition, Liberty Mutual has undertaken one of the nation’s most ambitious fire education initiatives: A 4,000-plus square-foot exhibit called “Where’s the Fire?”TM, located at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida.

Designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, Liberty Mutual, and the U.S. Fire Administration, “Where’s the Fire?” features an interactive game that challenges families to investigate a house for fire hazards by using a high-tech safety light that points out dangers.

And younger children can enjoy the exhibit’s “Play it Safe” house, where they learn about escaping house fires, creating family meeting places, and never hiding from firefighters.

Liberty Mutual also advocates fire safety through BeFireSmart.com, where parents will find vast resources to help them teach their families about fire safety and to prevent home fires from occurring.

The website includes games, room-by-room hazard checklists, interactive fire safety quizzes and a tool to build your own fire escape plan. The fast and fun kids’ section also features a downloadable coloring book that tells a story about the importance of never hiding from a firefighter during a fire.

Heart Wisdom Class – March 24th and 31st.

healing-therapiesCourtesy of Healing Therapies Adel:

Heart Wisdom Class

When you think of your heart in your chest, it is the size of your hand squeezed into a fist.

When you think of your heart “on stress” it is the tension of your hand squeezed into a fist.

Continue that tension indefinitely and you have the many physical problems of stress.

Come learn to listen more deeply to your heart’s wisdom as it communicates with you about your life.

Beginning with the attitude-of-gratitude, we will share a variety of different ways to relax and open your heart – for your physical health and your emotional/spiritual health.

Some basic physiology of stress (what your body does and how that can lead to physical and emotional symptoms) is included to bring a non-judgmental understanding about your life, to put you more in control of your own health.

In small groups, we will experience heart-opening approaches.

You will have one week to practice these methods at home and then come back to fine tune them to fit your particular needs so they will be even more effective.

March 24 & 31, 9:30 – 11:30 am at Healing Therapies,

118 S.9th Street, Adel.

Taught by MaryLea Holcomb (Healing Therapies, Adel)

Cost: $30

Class size is limited so please preregister.

Ken Depue – Imagination Images of Iowa

Ken Depue

Republished from the 2012 DiscoverAdel February Newsletter:

As the owner of both Imagination Images of Iowa and Code Electric, Ken Depue is one of those fortunate people that does not one job he loves but two.

While in high school at ADM he discovered photography. It made such an impact on him that he owned and operated Adel Photography in Adel.

In 2002 he apprenticed with A&W Electric, discovering a second career that he enjoyed. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to eventually start Code Electric.

Code Electric specializes in commercial and residential electrical work doing jobs of all sizes often taking him across the state.

An advantage of traveling was all of the town squares he saw. While running the photography shop in Adel, Ken took a panoramic of the court house. He put together the equipment and software then climbed a ladder in the middle of the street to reproduce the famous panoramic taken by Fredrick J. Bandholtz (1877 to 1963) in the early 1900’s.

The perfect shot took four attempts at 50 frames a shoot and hours of software manipulation. Eventually he discovered a workflow that he could reproduce.

This led to finding as many of the original courthouse panoramics as he could, thus Imagination Images of Iowa was born.

Due to the photos large sizes, he often receives them folded, torn, and worn from storage. Ken scans the photos, repairs the damage in his software and then researches where the photo was originally taken. He then travels to the location to reproduce the shot.

After a hundred years there are usually major changes to the areas he visits. Trees have grown up, buildings replaced or modified, and sometimes the original structures are completely gone due to tornado damage or housing projects.

Once the perfect photo is obtained, he produces an image containing the original at the top and the current view on the bottom.

Ken has collected a majority of Iowa’s courthouse photos and has plans to complete the last of them in the next year or so.

In his journey to preserve the past he records the GPS coordinates of the photo and copious notes so that a future photographer can do a third shot a hundred years from now. He often wonders who that will be.

Ken’s collection can be found and individual images purchased online at www.imaginationimagesofiowa.com. Each image has taken an average of 50 hours to complete.

If you have an old panoramic, Ken invites you to contact him at 515-208-2415.
