Town & Country Barbershop Returns to Adel
My great uncle was a barber. During the 60’s, yes, I’m that old, My grandfather and my dad would take turns each week taking me to get a haircut from my Uncle Andrew. To quote my dad, “a man gets his hair cut weekly, because it’s good for the soul”.
Then the Beatles changed everything, but some habits die hard. When we moved to Adel 25 years ago, one of my first trips downtown was to get a cut at the Town & Country Barbershop. It was the classic unpretentious barber shop of my youth.
Times change and the first of this year the shop closed. History has shown that once a Barber shop closes, the chances of it ever returning are minuscule. There are about 3,000 licensed barbers in Iowa, but the number still practicing is much lower.
This week Adel beat the odds as not one, but two Barbers are once again cutting hair in Adel.
Lenard Warford and Owner Jenny Orr of Town & Country Barbershop.
The Town & Country Barbershop at 903 Main Street was reopened on Monday by Jenny Orr, and a familiar face, Leonard Warford returned as well.
Jenny has barbered for 21 years, she attended the Iowa Barber College as did Leonard.
She grew up in Norwalk and has has several barber shops over the years in different locations and communities, the last “in the city” as she puts it. She was ready to move to a small town when one of her clients mentioned that the shop in Adel was closing.
Seeing this as a great opportunity, she moved to Adel and purchased the shop. When asked her thoughts on Adel she replied, “the people here are very friendly and it’s been a good move. I really like this town and I can’t wait for my first Sweet Corn Festival next week!”
For the last 12 years, a staple of the Adel barber shop has been Leonard Warford, he was born and raised in Adel. Leonard graduated barber college in 1966. “It may not have been the best time to graduate what with the Beatles and all” he remarked with a grin. “It was always a part-time job, but one I enjoy.”
Leonard worked full-time at the Des Moines Airport on the crash rescue squad. He retired from the airport in 2004 and has been cutting hair in Adel a couple of days a week ever since.
Now that the shop has reopened, he’ll be back at his post Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
From Army to corporate. Rocky Foster a 2005 Adel graduate gets a trim before starting his new job at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage as an underwriter. Rocky recently returned home from a 3 and a half year stint in the Army, having been deployed in Iraq for part of that time.

BASE® Raises over $7,000.00 for John D. Gomke Charity
L-R: Melissa Doyle, Cindy Harrington, Neil Aldrich, Steve Gomke, Jessica Gomke, Adam Harrington, Joe Havenhill, Jessica Reynolds, Terry Harrington.
BASE® began their fundraising efforts on May 1st and continued through the month concluding on May 31st. A local Adel company, BASE® serves the self-employed and businesses across the country through the administration of tax saving employee benefit plans.
This is the third consecutive year that BASE® has supported the John D. Gomke Charity. Last year, the company raised over $5,000 and hoped to surpass that amount in just a short time frame.
On Friday, June 21st, BASE® President Terry Harrington presented Steve and Jessica Gomke of the John D. Gomke Charity a check for $7,264.
BASE® took part in various fundraising activities throughout the month to contribute to their total. Aside from donations, employees sold butter braids, cookie dough, Schwans items, and returned pop cans. There was also a Schwans truck event that took place on May 17th in the Iowa Realty parking lot at the corner of Hwy 6 & Hwy 169 in Adel. Two Schwans trucks were parked for the afternoon which allowed customers to buy Schwans products on the spot and allow BASE® to collect a percentage of the proceeds. BASE® employees also participated “in-office” by donating money in order to wear casual clothing, which alone brought in $800.
BASE® is very proud of what they have accomplished not only this year but in the past years while fundraising for the Gomke Charity. They hope by doing this annual event they will generate more funds and awareness in the Dallas County area for the charity.
The John D. Gomke Charity raises money to benefit organizations that assist in caring and providing resources to sick infants and families who have lost infants in and around central Iowa. However, their efforts don’t stop there. In 2012, the Gomke Charity was able to do the following:
- $5,000 was put into John’s Bereavement Fund at the Mercy Foundation—the SOLE fund that helps give keepsakes and coping education in the Mercy Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Emergency Room.
- 3 Defibrillators (AEDs) were donated to the Panorama School District—including 2 for the school buildings and 1 to travel with the athletic events.
- 1 Defibrillator (AED) was donated to the Adel-De Soto-Minburn School District to travel with the athletic events.
- 1 Defibrillator (AED) was donated to the Nodaway Valley School District to travel with the athletic events.
- Adopted a family who suffered the loss of an infant during 2012 to help cope with their first Christmas with a “Cheer Box”.
- Replacement pads and batteries given to the Adel-De Soto-Minburn School District for prior AEDs donated that were expired.
To learn more about the charity visit www.johndgomkecharity.org.
Quote from BASE employee Neil Aldrich: “We (Base) have been sponsoring the Gomke foundation for a few years now. I always thought that it was a good charity, but now that I have two little ones of my own it really hits home. There isn’t a day that goes by when you don’t hear about something crazy going on in the world and as a parent, one of my biggest worries is how to keep my children safe as they grow up. The medical equipment that the Gomke foundation purchases could someday be needed to save one of my children’s life; or the life of someone else’s child or my neighbor’s grandkid. The Gomke foundation is a great local charity that helps strengthen our community. “

Parents Can Help Preteens with Abduction Concerns
Courtesy of the Dallas County ISU Extension Office
AMES, Iowa – Parents naturally are concerned for their children’s safety, particularly when there is news of a child abduction that happens close to home.
Finding the balance between emotions and the “teachable moment” as parents talk to their children is important, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach specialist says.
According to Malisa Rader, an ISU Extension family life program specialist, preteens and older school-age children might be dealing with their own fears based upon what they are seeing on TV or hearing from others.
“It is important at this time that parents react with a sense of calm and reassurance,” Rader said.
Parents can take this opportunity to share with their children important information to help avoid potentially dangerous situations, but need to approach it in a manner that doesn’t create unhealthy fears in children.
Share Helpful Information
Rader offered some suggestions from eXtension.org/parenting:
- Give hugs and reassurance as you talk to your child about the frightening experience.
- Avoid frightening media stories that might be upsetting to some children.
- Point out ways your child has learned to stay safe, such as saying “no” and running away when they are concerned about a situation.
Help Young People Process Thoughts, Feelings
Rader encourages parents to watch their children closely for signs of anxiousness. Being open to talk about those feelings while developing safety strategies can help children feel in control of situations. They can learn to make good choices when faced with possible unsafe circumstances, while still enjoying some of the carefree aspects of childhood.
“Be open to how your child might be feeling and talk with him or her with sincerity and honesty,” Rader said.
This is an opportunity to discuss any number of issues with teens and preteens — from not putting themselves in particularly dangerous situations to how to react when they sense they might be in potential danger, Rader said.
“This is a teachable moment, so use it! But doing so in a calm, reassuring manner will help your point come across more clearly without raising unhealthy fears in young people,” the ISU Extension specialist said.
Watch for Signals that Further Help Might Be Needed
The following signs are normal reactions to severe stress, Rader said. However, if one or more of the signs continue for more than a week, seek outside help.
Depression — Signs include sleep pattern changes such as difficulty falling asleep, frequently waking in the night or too early in the morning, continual sleeping; personal care changes such as skipping baths and shampoos; physical or mental changes such as overeating or under eating, feeling numb or continually tired, losing the ability to concentrate or crying constantly.
- Parenting problems, such as the inability to cope and give needed attention to children
- Behavioral problems, such as children acting up frequently or getting into trouble with authorities
- Isolation — not having anyone to talk with
- Inability to face reality — not wanting to admit how serious the problems really are or to begin work on them
“Help is available,” Rader said. “You don’t have to face these problems alone. If you note any signs of anxiousness or depression in your child or yourself, talk with a mental health professional, your family doctor or clergy. These people can provide extra support when you need it.”
Iowans can call the ISU Extension and Outreach Iowa Concern Hotline, 800-447-1985, for help and referrals for dealing with stress, crisis and loss.
