Aerial Tour of the Iowa State Capitol Complex

Arial View Stats Capital - Ken DePueCourtesy of Ken Depue:

Ken Depue of Code Electric and Imagination Images of Iowa sent us a great note.

Ken is an Adel native and ADM graduate who recently purchased a “flying camera”.

He’s been capturing birds eye views of places we’ve only seen from the the ground.

He recently shot a great video of the Iowa State Capital. (Movie below)

An advantage of traveling was all of the town squares he saw. While running the photography shop in Adel, Ken is well known for taking panoramic shots of court houses.

He put together the equipment and software then climbed ladders in the middle of the street to reproduce the famous panoramics taken by Fredrick J. Bandholtz (1877 to 1963) in the early 1900’s. His new camera should be a nice addition to his portfolio.

A large “Thank you!’ to Ken, it’s well worth the watch! Enjoy!

Freedom Fest 2014 - Park Place Catering Adel IowaCourtesy of Park Place Catering:

August 2 Event Raises Funds for Adel Legion & Child Youth Program and Warrior & Family Services Branch

Families can have fun and support Iowa soldiers at the first annual Freedom Fest August 2, 2014.

The event begins with a free will lunch hosted by Park Place Catering from 11:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.

A carnival outside the hall, located at 1015 Riverside Drive in Adel, will also begin at 11:00am. Sponsors are providing games for children, a dunk tank, and a rock climbing wall. Adults can treat themselves to a free will chair massage.

The day will end with a Freedom Dance from 7:30–11:00 p.m.

Organizer Brenna Young said, “I wanted to do something to help the warriors that fight for this country, but I wanted to keep it local. The money will be used for Iowa’s soldiers and to help their families and kids.”

Young, the owner of Park Place Catering, at first planned to host just a lunch and a dance. However, local businesses and organizations wanted to support her fundraising efforts. Local schools and Boy Scout troops have volunteered to help at the festival, and vendors from Adel and all over the metro area have stepped up as sponsors.

My small vision is now turning into a big vision,” said Young. “I can’t wait to see what happens August 2.”

Sponsors to date are:

  • Brick Street Motors
  • Des Moines Radio Group
  • Fusion
  • G.Rafics Inc. Adel
  • Hotel Pattee
  • Monica Hoover, Shelter Insurance
  • Nobbies
  • Peoples Trust & Savings Bank
  • Stew Hanson Dodge
  • Terri Snyder Photography

Adel and Dallas County Approve 28E Agreement

Dallas County Courthouse

Courtesy of the City of Adel:

Adel and Dallas County Agreement for Administrative Facilities

Population growth and the demand for county services in Dallas County, Iowa, have created a need for new Dallas County administrative and public safety facilities.

Several months ago, at a special election, a proposal to place these facilities three miles east of down town Adel and away from the business district failed to pass by a large plurality.

The City of Adel and Dallas County, therefore, have agreed to participate in the selection, acquisition, and preparation of a new administrative building near downtown Adel.

The agreement is proceeding pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 28E and contemplates contributions of funds from both the City of Adel and Dallas County.

The Adel City Council, on June 2, 2014, approved the agreement. On June 3, 2014, the Dallas County Board of Supervisors made a similar decision.

Adel Mayor James Peters and Dallas County board of Supervisors Chair Kim Chapman are supportive of the project and the spirit of cooperation between the two governmental bodies.

The Animal Hospital of Adel Frequently Asked Questions

The Animal Hospital of Adel

The Animal Hospital of AdelCourtesy of The Animal Hospital of Adel:

With flea and tick time upon us, The Animal Hospital of Adel has some helpful answers.

Can I apply Frontline anywhere on my pet’s hair?
-Frontline works best through the skin’s sebaceous glands, it has to be applied directly to the skin, not the haircoat.

How long does it take for fleas to die?
-Frontline starts killing fleas upon contact. Fleas do not have to bite a treated pet for Frontline to work.

Why am I seeing fleas on my dog after applying Frontline?
-You may see fleas on top of the haircoat. This is an indication that Frontline is working. Because Frontline kills fleas by overstimulating their nervous systems, hyperexcited fleas may move to the top of the haircoat before they die.

Can my dog be bathed or go swimming after applying Frontline?
-Frontline products are waterproof and remain effective even if a dog swims or is bathed. The important thing to remember is to wait 48 hours after bathing or swimming before applying Frontline, and wait 48 hours after applying before allowing your pet to get wet.

I applied Frontline two weeks ago – why are there still fleas visible?
-You are now seeing new fleas hatching from eggs and larvae that were present in the environment before the first treatment of Frontline. Keep treating monthly for at least 3-4 months to bring the flea population under control. For effective flea and tick control, apply Frontline monthly throughout the year – fleas can live year-round.

Do I need to use a flea and tick product on my indoor-only cat?
-Yes. Although your cat may not go outside, you, or other pets in the household, may bring fleas into the home. These fleas may infest the untreated cat or lead to a flea infestation in the house.

Fleas and ticks are in full force already this spring. Stop in to take advantage of our great offers and get your pet started on Frontline today!

Tom Vilsack Acknowledges ISU Extension Work

Dallas County ISU Extension Office

Tom Vilsack - USDA
United States Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack

Vilsack Acknowledges ISU Extension Work, ISU Extension and Outreach celebrates 100 years

Iowa State University is the birthplace of Cooperative Extension.

On March 27, the Iowa Senate congregated at the state capitol and unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution honoring the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, the founding legislation of Extension.

More recently additional acknowledgement was made by United States Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack.

“Here at USDA, we place a high priority on making our services and resources available to all Americans,” said Vilsack. “And one of our strongest partners in this effort is the Cooperative Extension service.”

ISU Extension and Outreach of Dallas County carries out the university’s land-grant mission of engaging citizens in non-biased, research-based education. In 2013, through programs, workshops, informational trainings and online resources, Dallas County Extension reached more than 12,000 citizens. For farmers, Extension offers private pesticide applicator training, farm leasing workshops and meetings about crop insurance options. For families, information is made available concerning health, handling stress, personal finance and parenting strategies for infant children all the way through teenage years. Child care providers look to Extension to help them with quality improvement, including trainings on subjects like problem solving with children and developmentally appropriate use of iPads. Tips and services are also available for local growers with personal gardens and those who produce on a larger scale.

“Extension has improved the lives of consumers and families through things like nutrition education, food safety training and youth leadership development through the 4-H program,” Vilsack informed. “Extension has also contributed to the success of countless farms, ranches and rural businesses through everything from integrated pest management training on farms to business planning and risk management tips for entrepreneurs.”

BASE® Donates $1,400 to Branden Bissell

Base Presentation to Branden Bissell
L-R: Dustin Petty, Branden Bissell, Missy Solum

What started as lunch time chatter turned into an opportunity that BASE® employees Missy Solum and Dustin Petty couldn’t pass up.

In early March Missy Solum passed along the news to her fellow co-worker Dustin Petty, that her family friend and Adel native Branden Bissell was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Missy also mentioned to Dustin that Branden has spent the last six years battling to protect the United States as a member of the Army reserves. It was then, when Dustin knew an opportunity lay in front of him to help a soldier in need.

Together with the support of BASE® business owners Terry and Cindy Harrington, Missy and Dustin organized multiple activities around the office for the month of March to raise money for Branden and his family.

Some of the highlights from the month were a company jeans fundraiser where employees were able to wear jeans based on donations given, as well as Terry Harrington making contributions on St. Patrick’s day based on employees wearing green.

Prior to Branden’s benefit spaghetti supper on March 29th, BASE® partnered with Fareway to help purchase supplies for the benefit. BASE® donated 20 pounds of hamburger, 14 pounds of lettuce salad and 15 containers of parmesan cheese.

On Wednesday, April 2nd, Branden visited BASE® and was presented with a VISA gift card worth $1,405. The VISA card will go towards helping Branden with medical bills and the costs associated with traveling back and forth to Iowa City for treatments.

Terry Traveller – This Day in History

Terry TravelerTerry Traveler here, excited for the month ahead.

The other day, Chris and I were discussing our hobbies and I admitted to a slight obsession with “this-day-in-history” so called facts.

I take great joy in knowing that 876 years ago Germany crowned King Koenraad II von Hohenstaufen on the same day as the 9th Soul Train Music Awards awarded Boyz II Men’s “II” the title of best group R&B album. A fact that was lost on Chris.

Ah, the internet. Where once I was reduced to keeping important facts like these cluttered in my head, I am now smart enough to carry a phone that will do it for me – making room for more important questions like, “how does one successfully throw oneself at the ground and miss?” Seems to be a real knack to that.

April 1, 1957
The BBC played a prank, known as the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest prank. They showed a film of Swiss farmers picking freshly-grown spaghetti. Requests for where to purchase the plants were so numerous that they retracted the story shortly afterwards. Really spaghetti plants in Switzerland… not China or Italy?

April 3, 1860
The Pony Express service began as the first rider departed St. Joseph, Missouri. For $5 an ounce, letters were delivered 2,000 miles to California within ten days. Makes that $0.48 stamp seem less costly and more timely, doesn’t it?

April 3, 1995
Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to preside over the Court, sitting in for Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist who was out of town. It is believed that in all the active surrounding the special event, she forgot to water his house plants and take in the newspaper.

April 6, 1896
After a break of 1500 years, the first Olympics of the modern era was held in Athens, Greece. Swimmers we boated the necessary 1200 meter out to sea and left to swim back to shore. Luckily, no shark attacks were reported.

April 11, 1970
Apollo 13 was launched from Cape Kennedy. Fifty-six hours into the flight an oxygen tank exploded in the service module. Astronauts John L. Swigert, James A. Lovell and Fred W. Haise used the lunar module as a lifeboat safely returning to Earth on April 17th. For more historic Apollo information, please ask Tom Hanks.

Animal Hospital of Adel Thinks “Green”

The Animal Hospital of AdelCourtesy of The Animal Hospital:

Since Spring is just around the corner, it’s time to think “Green.”

Here at The Animal Hospital of Adel, we try to watch our carbon footprint.

Beginning this month, we are vowing to use less paper.

Billions of trees are cut down every year just for paper products, and we want to do our part by cutting back on paper waste.

One way we decreasing our paper waste is by offering to email your invoice copy to you instead of being printed at our office. By offering to have your invoices sent to you electronically, you can help in our effort to decrease our carbon footprint.

Another way you’ll notice us trying to decrease our paper usage is by implementing and using more electronic forms. We will offer these forms at your pet’s surgery check-in and when dropping off your pet.

We want to sincerely thank you in advance for helping us decrease our carbon footprint on Earth!
