Terry Remembers Oktoberfest

Terry TravellerTerry Traveler here, getting ready to travel, once again.

This time of year is my favorite time of year as I pack my antique beer stein and Idiot’s Guide to German as I head off to Munich for Oktoberfest!

Ah, Oktoberfest. I remember my first visit like it was the 70s. At least I think it was the 70s. I seem to recall wearing an avocado-green parka with harvest gold buttons, so it must have been the 70s.

The city was bustling! Millions of people had joined in celebration of the anniversary of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese, though most revelers seemed to have forgotten this merry tale of 1800’s love for which Oktoberfest originates. Always the true historian, I made sure to share this beautiful story with all whom surrounded me like sardines.

Packed in tight, we wandered our way towards the great casks of Oktoberfest and I continued my conversation with all those around me. I had just entered into my doctoral thesis about sauerkraut traditions when several nearby gents started a row.

Gent #1: My mother always served sauerkraut hot, are you calling my mother a liar?
Gent #2: No, I’m just saying that I like it better cold.
Gent #3: And I suppose I know where you stand on caraway seeds then, don’t I?!
Gent #4: I can take them or leave them.
Gent #5: My mother was a saint!
And a punch was thrown.

I learned in the hospital that the brawl lasted for hours until the local fire department hosed down hundreds of participants who had subdivided and were last heard chanting one slogan or another, “Best Served Hot!”, “Best Served Cold!”, “Yes We Say To Caraways!”

Ah, how I look forward to the dignity and refined social graces of another Oktoberfest.

This is Terry Traveler saying, it may not be true, but the debate about sauerkraut certainly is!

Huge Turnout for Mara Nevins and Tori’s Angels Foundation

Mara & Mom – Photo credit to Jessica Gohn at Photography by Jessica

Friends of Mara Nevins showed up by the hundreds at the benefit for Mara and Tori’s Angels Foundation Saturday. June 24th.

Approximately 400 people came to show their love and support for Mara.

Friends and supporters from Adel and surrounding communities were extremely generous with their donations for the free-will lunch and donated over 150 impressive silent auction items.

One organizer said, “I’m so glad that we had such a great turn out and the community came out in full force!”

The benefit was so successful that it may be the foundation’s largest benefit yet.

Everyone signed a large “We Love You Mara” card to show their support. Mara’s pre-school friends sang for her, and Mara was serenaded by her sister Cora and other friends. Children had their faces painted and a few enjoyed looking at their image in a full-length mirror up for bid in the silent auction.

Superheroes-Justice-Corps-of-IowaSuperheroes from Justice Corps of Iowa posed for pictures with admiring, delighted children.

Everyone enjoyed a lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, ice cream and delicious dessert bars baked by local friends.

Four-year-old Mara is the daughter of Lyle and Brandi Nevins of Adel. Mara was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and had surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Her oncologist is now seeking alternate treatment for Mara that may include travel to another state. All trip expenses for Mara and her parents will be paid by the foundation for as many trips as might be needed.

Tori’s Angels raises funds to help the families of their supported children who have life-threatening medical conditions. The foundation pays all medical expenses not covered by insurance from the date of sponsorship.

This includes travel expenses to treatment (airfare, hotel, meals), as well as medical co-pays, deductibles, and prescription medicine.

Tori's-Angels-Adel-Fundraiser-CrowdThe foundation recently accepted two additional children and now supports 23 children in Central Iowa (having sponsored a total of 29 children since 2010).

Members from seven of Tori’s Angels supported families attended. One parent shared later, “We were very touched to see how many people came out to support Mara and the rest of the Tori’s Angels kids. You could feel the support in the room.” Tori’s Angels wishes to thank everyone who made this event possible-from the planning group to each donor.

Those unable to attend the benefit and who wish to donate to help Mara and other Tori’s Angels children are invited to send donations to the foundation’s chairman, Bill Ridgley, at 4677 Panorama Dr, Panora IA 50216.

An online donation option is located on the Tori’s Angels Facebook page. Supporters can “Like” the Tori’s Angels Facebook page to receive regular updates on the children.

For more information about Tori’s Angels or to request an application for support, contact the foundation’s chairman, Bill Ridgley, at bridgley@netins.net or 712-249-6423.

BASE® Staff Volunteers at Meals from the Heartland

BASE® Employee Benefits Adel IowaCourtesy of Base®:

BASE® employees spent a Friday afternoon packaging meals for the hungry at Meals from the Heartland, a charity located in West Des Moines, Iowa.

In two short hours, over 17,000 meals were packaged to send to malnourished people in Iowa, across the United States and around the world.

BASE® was excited to be involved in helping others in need and jumped at the opportunity to donate their time.

Laura Radebaugh and Jessica Reynolds, employees at BASE®, organized the event for the company.

“When asking for charity ideas we could do as a team, we got the suggestion to package meals at Meals from the Heartland from an employee. It turned out to be a huge success. Our staff is wonderful and volunteered their personal time to work as a team and help feed people. We all worked hard and had a great time in the 2 hour shift and packaged 17,000 meals for those in need,” Laura stated.

Each person had their own specific job including packaging, weighing food, sealing and boxing the meal for shipping. The staff from Meals from the Heartland made the experience by providing a fun atmosphere, motivation and encouragement. The BASE® staff was accompanied by many other groups from around the community helping to support the cause.

Inspired by a food-packaging event held by a church in West Des Moines back in 2007, Meals from the Heartland has encouraged thousands of volunteers to come together year-round for this meal packaging effort. They are always looking for additional groups and volunteers from the community to donate their time and support this cause.

Terry – Soap Opera Digest

Editor’s note: It seems there was a “mix-up” on a list at the airport. So, instead of another installment of international travel from our little explorer, we have a staycation treat as Terry crashes in the editor’s lounge, eating cheese curls and watching a LOT of daytime TV…

Once again it is I, Terry Traveler, your lone source of truth in these, the days of our lives.

Like sand through an hour glass, I am restless as the world turns. The general hospitality of these dark shadowy moments is lacking, leaving me to search for a guiding light.

I wish for bold and beautiful days of sunshine! Days when the young and the restless alike are wooed by the soft sounds of a singular piano, or perhaps saxamaphone.

A time when the search for tomorrow will not lead us to the edge of night.

So I say to all my children and desperate housewives everywhere: follow your passions and find someone to share it with ’cause we only have one life to live. And these rainy spring days are simply passages to bright promises.

This is Terry Traveler saying, you may not want to admit you knew the 15 references above, but you did. And now you know, that I know, you know.

Terry on the Emerald Isle

Editor’s note: It’s always that third wish…

Top of the morning to ye dear friends it is I, Terry Traveler. This March I bring you good tidings from the wondrous, Emerald Isle- Ireland.

This beautiful land reminds me of Iowa, what with the castles and barns. The weather seems pretty much the same, and the people are just as nice.

It took a great deal of explaining in broken Gaelic to the kind Inn Keeper who spoke English that I had no need for the wool sweater and Cinnamon Sticks I accidentally ordered from room service. When my meal finally arrived, I received a Tayto Sandwich: two pieces of white bread, buttered, with potato chips inside. It wasn’t the blood sausage I ordered, but it was tasty. I later discovered this is a modern Irish delicacy.

The next day I spoke again with the friendly Inn Keeper who blamed the mishap on the neighborhood leprechauns who must have messed with the order.  In a land as lush and green as Ireland, it is not surprising to hear stories of leprechauns- wee people of magic and cobbling living the life of faeries. Yes, the tiny shoemakers, the Inn Keeper said, love dancing so much they are in constant need of new footwear. In my experience, the wisest of whom simply chooses to go barefoot.

On my third day in Ireland I met Bartley and fine chap he was. Standing a mere two feet tall, with a long red beard and a wildly mischievous look in his eyes. We hit it off right away. As legend goes, once caught, a leprechaun will grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom. My wishes were simple- that I be healthy, that my family be happy, and a third wish I poorly phrased which now means I can never remove my beloved orange parka. Luckily, I own stock in Febreeze.

This is Terry Traveler saying, it may not be true but this time we can blame it on the blarney stone.

Hands to Larger Service A Success! (with Photos)

ISU-Ext-Hands-to-Larger-Service-00Courtesy of the Dallas Co Extension Office

Dallas County 4-H and Clover Kids held a county wide “Hands to Larger Service” food drive event this last Saturday (March 4th, 2017)

Over 1500 pounds of food and $850 in cash donations were raised for the Dallas County food pantries and food backpack programs through the schools.

4-H’ers and Clover Kids gathered food through community drives and individual effort. The kids along with their families, neighbors and community members brought donations to the event where they were weighed and sorted.

The food pantries in Adel, Dallas Center, Waukee, Perry, Granger, Woodward, Grimes, and Dexter were supported with food and monetary donations.

ISU-Ext-Hands-to-Larger-Service-01

A major focus of the event was to provide education on food insecurity in Dallas County and what we can all do to make a positive impact. ISU Extension and Outreach Nutrition and Health specialist Mary Krisco and Family Finance Specialist, Carolyn Steckelberg provided resources on eating healthy and building strong financial skills.

ISU-Ext-Hands-to-Larger-Service-04

The Dallas County Master Gardeners educated the kids on donating fresh produce to your local food pantries. Dallas County Public Health, World Food Prize, Food Bank of Iowa, and Waukee Community Closet also provided educational opportunities.

ISU-Ext-Hands-to-Larger-Service-02

Food Insecurity is defined as having limited access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle. 9.3% of Dallas County residents experience food insecurity (approximately 7,452 people). Between Feb. and Oct. 2016, local food pantries served 2,309 households in Dallas County. Dallas County food pantries serve all ages.

ISU-Ext-Hands-to-Larger-Service-03

Friday Food Backpack programs in Dallas County schools help lessen hunger in children by providing school-aged youth with a backpack of kid-friendly, healthy food. During the 2015-16 school year, 6,198 backpacks were distributed in the county.

Mobile Food Pantry locations include the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center, Crossroads Church and the Dallas County Hospital in Perry along with the Rhema Worship Center in Waukee.
