Terry Visits Parks in Adel, Iowa
I love Iowa summers. Each year I dust off my picnic basket, grab my trusty plaid blanket, and head out in search of the perfect shade tree.
Adel is home to nice parks. I started the season at Island Park for a little fishing. I’m not very good at it but I’m very good at relaxing. I checked out the historic bridge that spans over the dam, it’s a view worth seeing!
I also spent an evening at the Kinnick-Feller Park and Adel Municipal Pool. The park is a fun place to plan a get together with a few gazebos and lots of equipment for the kids.
There is a waterway entry point for the brave interested canoeing or kayaking. Personally, I prefer the chlorinated waters of the pool, it’s a great way to spend a summer night in Adel.
Once the rain stopped I got to enjoy an afternoon with family and friends at Evans Park. The kids got to play on the new slides and swings while the adults relaxed in the sun. We finished the day with a game of volleyball. Next time I’ll bring my Frisbee golf discs and try out the new course.
So grab your sunscreen, head outside, and enjoy another Iowa summer in Adel, Iowa!

ASE Counterman/Store Owners of the Year Awarded to John Standley of Adel Auto Parts Corp
On Tuesday, December 7th John Standley of the Adel Auto Parts Corporation was announced the 2011 NAPA Des Moines NAPA/ASE Parts Specialist of the Year!
Nominees of the Automatic Service Excellence Award are selected from the 60 national NAPA distributions centers to include all company owned stores, independent store owners, and ASE certified individuals.
Service record, leadership skills, and community service projects are all considered during nominee selection.
The Des Moines NAPA/ASE Parts Specialist of the Year Award was presented to Mr. Standley in recognition of his 34 years of automotive service and ongoing community support.
John is a respected community leader, current board member and former President and two term Vice President of the Adel Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the annual Brick Street Car Show, and active member of various City of Adel committees.
As the district winner, John was then entered into the National competition with 60 other countermen and store owners. John was seen as a frontrunner and was later announced as the runner up. John states that he is honored to be considered among the top NAPA countermen in the country.
This is the second award for John and his crew as earlier this year they were recognized as receipients of NAPA’s highest honor, the exclusive NAPA Five Star Excellence Award!
On Tuesday John awarded the Adel Auto Parts Corporation crew with individual plaques to commemorate their hard work and ongoing great service. “I am very proud of our accomplishments. For our work in Adel to be considered at the national level goes to show that anybody, anywhere can succeed.”

Adel Brick Streets Ribbon Cutting
The Adel Brick Street Project is coming to an end for the 2010 season.
To honor this historic occasion, the City of Adel held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the corner of Main and 9th street.
This coincides with the opening of the intersection and full access on Main.
Due to the upcoming weather, the project will finished in the early Spring. For the official wrap-up on the street project, please read the City’s open letter to the community.

Adel Brick Street Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

After many months, the historic Adel Brick Street project is finally coming to an end.
Please join community leaders Tuesday, November 30th at 5:30pm for a brief “ribbon cutting” ceremony at the intersection of 9th and Main Streets.
This ribbon cutting ceremony will commemorate the opening of Main Street and mark the final days of the project.
Everyone is invited to attend the auspicious event and take part in a great moment in Adel history!

Crews worked through Wednesday on the Main and 9th St. intersection. The intersection is close to being accessible, we will have updates for you once Main is opened.

Crews have laid the brick on 9th up to the Main street intersection. They’re working on the Main street intersection and the surrounding bump outs today. They’re also preparing the sidewalk corners for cement.

Good Morning,
On this bright sunny day, I am happy to report that the intersection of Court Street and 9th Street has opened for traffic as has the first half block of 9th Street south to the Adel Health Mart. There are still a few details to clean up and a little sidewalk left to pour – but the streets are open in this area.
Schedule for today and into next week include continued general clean up of the entire site and installation of storm sewer intakes.
Brick work is continuing south and will be to the intersection of Main Street today. Saturday and Monday work will commence on laying brick in the intersection and transition areas along Main Street. At this time it is likely Main Street will be open in time for Thanksgiving.
Work continues on lighting and wiring – I do not have a date for completion of that work yet.
Be sure to stop in the Health Mart today as not only do they have street access again, they are celebrating their annual open house from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.
(Please note in this area, traffic will be allowed to move south on 9th Street and should exit the area via the alley. This will provide a “circular” driving pattern in the area and aid in traffic control.)

Adel Brick Streets Projected To Finish In Two Weeks
The city will open Court Street and traffic will be allowed on 9th to the alley on Thursday, November 18th.
Adel’s Brick Street Project is starting to wrap up.
At the Tuesday, Brick Street Meeting Chad Bird, the Adel City Administrator, outlined the progress of the remaining street work.
Crews are working hard to finish 9th Street and the remaining intersections at Main and Prairie.
Weather forecasts are favorable that all of the major work will be completed in the next two weeks allowing traffic back on 9th street and the downtown area.
A Reopening Ceremony will be held when the Main Street intersection is drivable. DiscoverAdel will post that date once it is determined.
The street lights are scheduled to be delivered in early December. Installation will be dependent upon the weather. The lights were reordered due to the wrong order being sent to Adel.
There are a few minor checklist items that will need to addressed in the spring, as was previously reported. Crews will be scheduled in April to address those changes which will have no impact on use-ability of the roads.

Crews are working to finish the bricks on 9th today. The goal is to complete the section from the Court St, intersection to the alley. Thursday is the projected date to open the Court and 9th street intersection with traffic being able to proceed down 9th to the alley . Parking on the West side of the street should also be open.

The Brick layers are here and the final work is ready to begin.
The brick sub-contractor has been on site the last couple of days prepping for bricklaying to begin Monday.
The brick work is anticipated to start on Court and 9th and progress generally south.
Critical path areas (intersections, crosswalks, streets) will be done first followed by bump-outs, and inlay areas.
The concrete sub-contractor is expecting to substantially finish his work today or tomorrow and another sub should be in tomorrow, Saturday, to begin the clean-up and street sweeping.
The grading sub-contractor is also on-site today installing the storm intake areas and will be finishing the little hand-work are the intakes as they complete each intake. They will probably also work generally, north to south.
Sadly, the general work area has been the victim of several acts of vandalism the past couple of weeks. This has caused delays as crews have had to repair some of the work. Other parts that were vandalized will be spot repaired and re-assessed in the spring. On behalf of the City, I ask that everyone be on the lookout for suspicious activity downtown, especially during the overnight hours. Needless acts such as this cost all of us time and money.
As always, I can not say enough, how much I appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience during this project. It has been a long summer but we are nearing completion.
