Golden Apple Award Presented to Della Weems

ADM High School teacher Della Weems received this month’s Golden Apple Award during the homecoming assembly on October 4th.
She was nominated by Meagn Koch in a letter she wrote telling why Mrs. Weems is so special.
The award was presented by WHO television and Allied Insurance.
The presentation will air on WHO TV 13 news on October 18th.

4th Annual John’s Baby Steps 5K Results and Photos
Despite of the storm damage from Thursday, the 4th Annual John’s Baby Steps 5K was held worry free Saturday, September 21st.
The weather was beautiful and the temps were perfect for the race.
By Saturday, cleanup crews had already moved the trees blocking the paths.
Volunteers finished sweeping the trails clean so the runners would have a smooth course. Kevin from Open Road setup and calibrated the digital timer at the Starting/Finishing line.
Karly Kuhse and her sister, sang the National Anthem.
The race took off on time with contestants again finishing faster than last year.
The first to cross the Finish line was 39 year old Daniel Blondowski with a winning time of 18:48.
Finishing First in the Female Division was Cary Birdsall, 37, time of 22:26.

The youth races proved to be a hit with the kids as the entire park cheered them on as they crossed the Finish lines.
Runners were treated to water, bananas, and pizza.
Wrapping up the days events was the Raffle as prizes were announced and the Place and Gender prizes were awarded.

Adel Kiwanis Every Kid Plays Program Open
The Adel Kiwanis has created a program to assist ADM families by helping cover some or all of the participation fees or uniform costs for their k-8 child who participates in ADM activities.
Qualifying activities include band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, dance, football, gymnastics, scouts, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball among others.
The Every Kid Plays! Program will reimburse up to $200 per child for those families that are having financial difficulties or otherwise experiencing tough times.

Patriot Day – 911 Remebrance
Patriot Day honors those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.
By designation of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.
Traditionally the President asks the Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. (EDT).
This marks the time the first plane flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Adel Awarded $500,000 Community Development Grant
City of Adel Has Been Awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $500,000 from the Iowa Economic development Authority (IEDA) for Downtown Revitalization of the City’s Historic Downtown
Adel, IA (August 27, 2013) – The City of Adel has announced that it has been awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in an amount not to exceed $500,000.00 from the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA). The City and IEDA will enter into a contract with an ending date of July 31, 2016.
The grant funding will be used to revitalize the City’s historic downtown courthouse square district and involves a comprehensive façade improvement project. The project includes a City and private building owner match which will bring the total funds to nearly $1million.
Twenty (20) buildings in the project area have provided commitment letters to participate in the grant project. Adel Partners Chamber Director Karina Ward stated, “The overall project and grant will provide an exceptional opportunity to revitalize Adel’s historic downtown. When the project is complete there will be a fresh look to Adel’s downtown while restoring many historical attributes of the buildings.”
Please watch for updates on the progress of the project through the City’s website and newsletter. The first 6 months deal mostly with administrative and design activities. During the spring and summer of 2014, there should be some exciting transformative construction work being completed.

The Adel library is excited to welcome Minnesota author Frederick Blanch for a reading and signing of his latest book on Wednesday, August 28th at 2:00 p.m.
Mr. Blanch is an accomplished writer of poetry, prose, and scripts; his latest book of writings is called “Last Words: Frederick’s Bionary.”
“Last Words” was published in September of 2011, and received a nomination for a Minnesota Book Award.
The word Bionary comes from combining the words biography and dictionary, and the book follows a dictionary format of boldfaced “words” followed by “definitions,” ranging from a few words to several pages.
