Local Book Club part of Iowa Author Success Story

The Adel-based book club, Crows Reading Prose, has been meeting nearly every month for 4 years.

Its 12 members consist of Adel ladies, past and current, who enjoy gathering in one another’s homes for food, wine, and good conversation about their latest pages.

Book club members are Becky Mantell, Carol Wells, Christee Lee, Jo Berry, Jeannie Havnen, Kathleen Green, Marie Hansen, Michelle Messer, Nancy Hogstad, Sandie Laust, Suzanne Davidson, Teresa Burke and Jean Blaser.

The book club formed organically, starting first as a women’s fellowship group at the Adel Methodist Church, then as bi-annual sleepovers at the “Methodist B&B in Muskie (Muscatine)”.

It was Jean Balser, who longed for camaraderie and serious literary discussions, who first suggested they form a book club, with a series of rules to hold each other accountable such as attendance, 12 available memberships, and a scribe to recap and share notes from each meeting. Rotating turns as moderator would allow each member to suggest a book to be read.

The group has had several guest authors at their meetings including Iowa writers Mary Gottschalk and Carol Bodensteiner. Carol’s memoir, Growing Up Country was well received by the group and prompted the author to invite the club to be “beta readers” for her first novel, Go Away Home.

Go Away Home is a coming-of-age story about Liddie Treadway, a determined and independent woman seeking her dreams. Readers join her as she faces the conflicts, choices, joys and heartaches of love and life set in Iowa, circa World War One.

Before the novel was printed, each member read an early manuscript. Carol was invited back to the book club where feedback was shared about character development, structure, and overall appeal.

Carol then went back to the draft and made many of the suggested changes.

Crows Reading Prose club members were honored that the author granted them the opportunity to be part of the editorial process.

Go Away Home is now the Silver Medal winner for Historical Fiction in the Readers Favorite International Award competition.

Adel can share in Carol’s success, knowing that the thoughtfulness of its community members helped bring an Iowa author’s work to the limelight.

Korean War Veteran Jerry Mills will travel on Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Mills is a resident of The Village at Legacy Pointe Retirement Community of Waukee Public invited to Send-Off Party at The Village at Legacy Pointe at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 26th, 2014.

Jerry Mills, a Korean War Veteran and resident at The Village at Legacy Pointe Retirement Community of Waukee, will travel on the Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on September 30th.

Mills will be accompanied by almost 400 Korean War and World War II veterans traveling as part of the latest Honor Flight out of Des Moines.

While in Washington D.C., the group will visit the Korean War and World War II monuments. They will depart Des Moines International Airport at 3 a.m. on September 30, 2014 and return late that night.

Mills was born in Norwalk, Iowa, and graduated from Farrar (Iowa) High School. He served in Korea in the United States Army, 1951-1954.

He moved to The Village at Legacy Pointe in 2014.

“I am gratified to see so many Iowans taking an interest in the Korean War,” said Mills. “It’s wonderful that those who served can go on an Honor Flight trip to visit ‘our memorial’ in Washington.” “I feel like this Honor Flight trip will complete my mission; but don’t expect me to fit into my Army uniform anymore,” Mills joked.

“We are incredibly excited that Mr. Mills is receiving this recognition,” said Tammy Olson, Executive Director at The Village at Legacy Pointe. “It’s important for those who served to know that their contribution is valued and honored.”

The public is invited to The Village at Legacy Pointe for a Send-Off Party for Mills at 2 pm. on Friday, September 26th.

“In an attempt to raise awareness of childhood lung disease and the challenges each family faces, I have created this page for Ike’s Avengers.

Isaac is one of the most lively, vibrant and seemingly healthy 6 year old boy who has been fighting lung disease since before he took his first steps. His journey has not been an easy one but I think all of us can learn a lesson from my nephew in that you can never let “lifes’ situations” weigh you down.

Have any of you awoken in the night having a coughing fit or been unable to catch your breath by a smoky campfire? This is what I understand lung capacity and breathing issues to feel like. I am one of the seemingly fortunate ones in my family who have the ability to “breath easy”.

I am starting the challenge to breath a sigh of relief….no one has to dump freezing cold water on their head or jump into a cold muddy pond. I challenge anyone who accepts this challenge to broaden your knowledge of lung disease and to literally breathe a sigh of relief because you have the ability to rest easy!”

Inmans Inducted in to 4-H Hall of Fame – Participants say ’best thing’ for family

[ADEL, Iowa] — Chuck and Lorinda Inman of Adel were inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during the 2014 ceremony at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 17. (2014)

The Inmans were honored because of their outstanding service and dedication to Dallas County 4-H. Both Chuck and Lorinda have been involved with 4-H since they were club members in the 1960s, where they first met.

They have continued the 4-H family tradition by encouraging their three children, Coralie, Bradley and Katharine to take pride and excel within the program.

“Chuck and Lorinda Inman truly make a difference to the youth in 4-H,” said Dallas County Youth Coordinator, Aleta Cochran. “They continue to volunteer and are committed to ‘making the best better’ for 4-H youth.”

The husband and wife duo have a long resume of involvement with Iowa State Extension and Outreach of Dallas County and its 4-H youth program. Lorinda has served on the extension council and continues to be involved with the Dallas County 4-H Foundation and extension youth committee. Chuck also serves on committee and is the club leader of Adams Arrows.

Together, Chuck and Linda have volunteered at Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) trainings, dog obedience classes, town festivals, parades, livestock auctions and have sponsored trophies for the county fair. The Inmans promote the values of Dallas County 4-H and continue to make it a better program for future generations of 4-H’ers

Serving Corn at The Sweet Corn Festival with Photos

What a great Adel Sweet Corn Festival this year!

It has to have been one of the best I’ve ever been to!

Chris asked me take photos of the entire two days, the shucking, the open houses, the parade, the 5K, the Crowds, the events.

All award winning.

Those photos aren’t here.

I know the lens cap was off my camera and that I had plenty of flash cubes for the evening as well, but somewhere between midnight Saturday and today I lost my camera. I checked the car, the route home, even the dog. Unfortunately they’re gone.

Boy was Chris hot! I swear I saw him blink! 

Nonetheless, Chris took photos while LSB was serving Sweetcorn. Not the same quality as mine, of course, and not as plentiful, but hey they exist!

Join 4-H Today – Coming to a Theater Near You

Dallas County 4-H is a part of a huge central Iowa marketing campaign to gain recruitment in both 4-H members and volunteers.

Our YouTube ad will be shown at the Jordan Creek movie theater and specially designed, laminated table clings will be placed in the food court.

Additionally, through targeted demographics, we will reach audiences on YouTube.

We’re very excited about these efforts and hope you are, too! The 4-H program is a way for local 4th-12th graders to become leaders in their communities, learn new skills, gain new friends and, of course, have fun!

2014 Adel Reading Program Surpasses Last Year’s Total!

You did it! The kids participating in the Fizz, Boom, Read Summer reading program at the Adel Public Library, read over 5,000 hours.

That beat last year’s record of 4,414 total hours read.

Miss Laura and Miss Paula held up their promise to dress up in wacky costumes if the kids beat last year’s total, by dressing up as Cookie Monster and a Hershey chocolate kiss!

Congratulations to the Kids and the staff at the library!

Adel Water Tower Painting and Service Through Aug & Sept

Adel, IA (July 23, 2014) – The City of Adel will begin work on painting and servicing the north water tower (near 15th and Prairie) this week.

This maintenance is typically performed once every 10 – 20 years and will increase the life of the tower.

Service on the north water tower is expected to last through August. Once the north tower is finished, work will begin on the south water tower (near the Adel Family Aquatic Center) in late August. Both towers are expected to be completed in October.

Due to the painting and servicing of the towers, variances in water pressure will occur. These variances may occur at different times and in different places in the City from now until the project is completed.

In addition, the City will be relieving water pressure in response to the maintenance work by periodically flushing some fire hydrants.

The City will post reminders about this project to its website and to its Facebook and Twitter pages.

Ken is an Adel native and ADM graduate who recently purchased a “flying camera”.

He’s been capturing birds eye views of places we’ve only seen from the the ground.

He recently shot a great video of the Iowa State Capital. (Movie below)

An advantage of traveling was all of the town squares he saw. While running the photography shop in Adel, Ken is well known for taking panoramic shots of court houses.

He put together the equipment and software then climbed ladders in the middle of the street to reproduce the famous panoramics taken by Fredrick J. Bandholtz (1877 to 1963) in the early 1900’s. His new camera should be a nice addition to his portfolio.

1st Annual Freedom Fest Supports Iowa Soldiers Aug. 2nd

August 2 Event Raises Funds for Adel Legion & Child Youth Program and Warrior & Family Services Branch

Families can have fun and support Iowa soldiers at the first annual Freedom Fest August 2, 2014.

The event begins with a free will lunch hosted by Park Place Catering from 11:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.

A carnival outside the hall, located at 1015 Riverside Drive in Adel, will also begin at 11:00am. Sponsors are providing games for children, a dunk tank, and a rock climbing wall. Adults can treat themselves to a free will chair massage.

The day will end with a Freedom Dance from 7:30–11:00 p.m.

Organizer Brenna Young said, “I wanted to do something to help the warriors that fight for this country, but I wanted to keep it local. The money will be used for Iowa’s soldiers and to help their families and kids.”

Young, the owner of Park Place Catering, at first planned to host just a lunch and a dance. However, local businesses and organizations wanted to support her fundraising efforts. Local schools and Boy Scout troops have volunteered to help at the festival, and vendors from Adel and all over the metro area have stepped up as sponsors.

“My small vision is now turning into a big vision,” said Young. “I can’t wait to see what happens August 2.”

Terry Traveller – This Day in History “Don’t Panic!”

Terry Traveler here to say “Don’t Panic!”

Unless you’ve lost your towel or it’s June 18th, otherwise known as International Panic Day.

If it IS June 18th, feel free to throw your hands in the air like you care all too much.

March around town with a sandwich board sign. Sing most of the lyrics to that song about the end of the world.

Then wake up June 19th and celebrate World Sauntering Day – after that much panic, you’ve earned it.

But if you have lost your towel fellow traveler, a hearty promenade won’t cut it. For where will you go without your trusty towel? The interstellar constructs of space and time simply weren’t meant to be traversed sans terry cloth!

How will you hide from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal? As previously stated, don’t panic! The acquisition of a new towel is not a complicated process, thanks to the best-selling novella, “Selecting Your Towel: Is Microfiber Right For You?”

In chapter 17 the author highlights the many locations across the galaxy that sell finely crafted towels, but of course you can’t get there without one. And Chapter 42, sub-paragraph B outlines the many charitable organizations willing to share their towels with those in need.

But for a traveler trapped on Earth, the book’s best advice is this: “have you looked under your bed yet?” *Proven 92% effective on M-Class planets.

Armed once again with the most massively useful tool in the galaxy, you are ready to face whatever panic inducing events are to come.

And remember: “any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”

Adel and Dallas County Approve 28E Agreement

Adel and Dallas County Agreement for Administrative Facilities

Population growth and the demand for county services in Dallas County, Iowa, have created a need for new Dallas County administrative and public safety facilities.

Several months ago, at a special election, a proposal to place these facilities three miles east of down town Adel and away from the business district failed to pass by a large plurality.

The City of Adel and Dallas County, therefore, have agreed to participate in the selection, acquisition, and preparation of a new administrative building near downtown Adel.

The agreement is proceeding pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 28E and contemplates contributions of funds from both the City of Adel and Dallas County.

The Adel City Council, on June 2, 2014, approved the agreement. On June 3, 2014, the Dallas County Board of Supervisors made a similar decision.

Adel Mayor James Peters and Dallas County board of Supervisors Chair Kim Chapman are supportive of the project and the spirit of cooperation between the two governmental bodies.
