Brian Block – 1st Iowan to Climb 9 of the 7 Summits
In 2013, DiscoverAdel.com was proud to interview Brian Block of Adel as the first Iowan to complete the Seven Summits Challenge.
Though there is some debate amongst the climbing community, the “original” Seven Summits (in order of Brian’s completion) are Denali/ Mount McKinley in Alaska, Aconcagua in Argentina, Kosciuszko in Australia, Mount Everest across China and Nepal in Asia, Elbrus in Russia representing Europe, Vinson Massif on Antarctica, and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.
Among the climbing community, Mont Blanc, located on the Italian/French border, and the Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, are considered contested peaks, though equally difficult to surmount.
This summer, Brian’s dedication to mountain climbing continued as he became the first Iowan to climb all nine summits!
We wish safe travels to Brian as he returns from Indonesia and congratulations on completing this amazing feat!

The City of Adel has placed a 7% Hotel-Motel Tax question on the upcoming election ballot that will be decided on November 8, 2016.
RE: City of Adel’s Hotel- Motel Tax Ballot Question
Dear Residents,
The City of Adel has placed a 7% Hotel – Motel Tax question on the upcoming election ballot that will be decided on November 8, 2016.
The proposed 7% Hotel- Motel Tax is a transient tax that would be paid only by visitors and patrons staying at a future hotel or motel located within City limits. As noted in this packet, 152 cities in the State of Iowa have such a tax.
This packet includes information regarding the proposed Hotel-Motel Tax, which was approved for placement on the ballot by the Adel City Council and based on a recommendation by the City’s Economic Development Commission. The tax was proposed due to the increased interest and activity in locating a hotel in Adel.
The City would use the proceeds from the Hotel- Motel Tax for community events, cultural and recreational programming, tourism, projects sponsored by the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce, and other general uses. This packet includes a variety of programming and service examples that other cities in Iowa have been able to fund using their Hotel- Motel Tax proceeds.
In addition, this packet includes an F .A. Q. created by the Iowa Department of Revenue. The F.A.Q. answers a number of questions and scenarios about this kind of transient tax.
While the City of Adel cannot advocate for or against the proposed Hotel- Motel Tax, it may provide information about the ballot measure.

Terry Traveler – Visits Casey’s
Terry Traveler here with a local review of the Casey’s General Store in Adel.
This summer I traveled around Iowa and found that I often chose to stop at Casey’s General Store. They are generally pretty well stocked on items I want on a road trip- gas, soda, Funions, and donuts.
Some jerky, transmission fluid, a new hat. You know, milk, eggs, a nice bottle of Iowa vino, the basics.
Something I really like about Casey’s is the new deli sandwich area added to stores across the state. The customized deli sandwiches and wraps are good, fast, and affordable. I’m glad I also gave the fresh egg salad and chicken salad croissant sandwiches a try- they make a good, quick lunch.
I learned not every Casey’s is the same and my favorite is right here in Adel. The store has friendly employees, is very clean, and stays stocked up on all the essentials. Our kitchen does a great job making breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. My favorite is the Taco pizza, or the new Chicken Spinach Artichoke pizza. And the Casey’s in Adel now offers delivery, typically in 40 minutes or less.
In Adel, I know we can all like the convenience of picking up last minute items on Sunday when the local grocery store is closed. I gas up the car, grab dinner, pet food, and get home in 15 minutes or less, which is pretty great.
So stop in to Casey’s General Store in Adel and find out what makes our local store the best around!

Mystery of Missing Oakdale Gate Solved
You may have noticed the Oakdale Cemetery gate and sign is not up — Where did it go?!
The City of Adel in partnership with the citizen’s group, Oakdale Pride, is currently working on many revitalization projects of our cemetery! The entrance is first to get our attention.
Next time through, please notice the bridge. It has been power washed, probably for the first time ever and is looking great! The gate and sign are down for much needed repairs and will be powder coated and reinstalled with new letters to proudly proclaim Adel’s pride in our cemetery!
You can donate to the revitalization project by check made out to: City of Adel/Oakdale Pride and either drop it off at City Hall or mail it to: City of Adel, Attn: Anthony Brown, 301 S. 10th Street, Adel, IA 50003.

Terry Traveler – Desert Journey
I had trouble believing at first, but if anyone would wander around in the desert wearing a parka it’d be Terry. That still doesn’t mean I’m paying the receipts on this one. – Editor
The other day I, Terry Traveler, your loyal explorer of places unknown, found myself in a captivating place of wonder.
It had been a long journey through desert terrain leading me towards a gigantic monolith against a blue horizon.
The last thing I remember was seeing a camel, thinking I should call out for help, and a soft grainy pillow of sorts that I fell upon.
I awoke surrounded by white- everything from the paisley wallpaper to the couch, to the statues upon tabletops. It seemed such a contrast to my faded orange parka, carelessly thrown to the corner of the room. I had little time to register this place before two curious creatures entered. Their dress was exceptionally formal, bright reds and greens, with gold accents, bells, and tinkling trinkets lining the hems.
I’m not quite sure what they were saying, you see I speak several languages but apparently not that one. I made out a few words, something about shoestrings, antenna, and Jimmy Carter so I responded as such. The two exchanged a glance, and began showering me with gifts as I assume is the custom of this unknown land. I received 2 mini bottles of Spa Quality Shampoo/Conditioner In One, 3 tiny bars of Spa Quality sandalwood soap, my very own nail file, a bottle of water, a small can of macadamia nuts, 4 ear swabs, and 2 towels. I thanked them profusely as they left me, once again, alone in this strange room.
Suddenly, a magical screen began to rise out of yet another white piece of furniture. There was a slight click and hum as a picture began to solidify against the screen. I sat for hours listening to a pleasant voice talk about shoestrings, antenna, and Jimmy Carter while images of luxury pools, restaurants, and nightlife crossed the screen. I must have fallen asleep as I awoke with a start at the reappearance of the two sheet covered figures, this time accompanied by a man in a fancy grey suit. I must have been delirious as I couldn’t have heard the phrases “Oprah’s people need the room”, and “check out was at 11.” I collected my gifts, my orange parka, and exited the white room, prepared for what may lie beyond.
I was lead through an endless hallway to a golden elevator. The man in the grey suit listened with amazement as I recanted my long journey in the desert, the loss of my wallet to a camel, and my desperate need to know where I was. He seemed generally interested, taking me forcefully by the arm, and leading me to a large revolving door. I was thrown into a crowded street with more well wishes and talks of shoestrings.
I looked around, trying to get my barring when I saw a sign reading The Address, Dubai, a luxury hotel. At that moment it all made sense to me, and I was struck by a wave of disappointment. I had spent the entire night in a luxury hotel and I missed out on my one chance in ten years to watch HBO and finally see the ending of the Sopranos.

Ah, Iowa summers. They remind me of New Mexico winters. Terry Traveler here, remembering another tale of questionable origin. But this time, the question of origin is out of this world.
You see, the questions of life, the universe, and everything have always played heavily in my mind and once, when I was young and bright-eyed, I had the notion that I could find those answers out there among the stars.
I was back packing through the southwest along the Extraterrestrial Highway- a span of road so dark I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face, let alone the thumb I was sporting in an attempt to get a ride. I had just resolved myself that the search was hopeless when I tripped over a large, squishy lump. I apologized, as I often do with chairs or coffee tables, when I saw a flash of light reflected back to me.
Two large, dishpan eyes stared up at me from the huddled mass. I held my breath and tried to remember that book I had pretended to read about wolves in the third grade. Our eyes were locked as I slowly realized it appeared to be standing, long arms and slender hands on hips, with its gigantic head cocked to one side. I swear I heard it say, “Nice parka you got there.”
A million thoughts raced through my mind as I stood frozen: ALIEN! Why hadn’t I listened to my mother? I knew they were real! AHH! What was in those brownies? Can it read my thoughts? They weren’t MY brownies, I was just holding them for a friend! ALIEN! ALIEN! ALIEN!
And then I passed out.
I awoke in the hospital several days later. The doctors claimed that I had been left outside the emergency room doors with a note pinned to my orange parka, “Idiot has Heat Stroke”.
Apparently wearing a fur lined mountain coat was not the best choice for the dessert terrain. No one believed my story; instead I was told that I had been hallucinating from the heat, probably tripped over a rock, and hit my head.
When I got home I felt relieved to put the affair behind me and return to the truth of my gonzo journalism. That was, until a postcard arrived a few days later, postmarked Roswell, New Mexico. The message? “Nice parka you got there, Terry.”
