Dallas County 4-H Livestock Judging Team

Dallas County 4-H Livestock Judging team is in full swing and has had a very successful winter.
They were the 9th high team at the Sioux Empire contest in Sioux Falls, SD.
Successful results were had at the Iowa Beef Expo as the 4th and 6th high teams in oral reasons; 1st, 6th, 10th, 15th and 21st high teams in placings; and the 3rd and 6th high teams overall out of 22 4-H teams.
At the Iowa Beef Expo Livestock Judging Contest Dallas County 4-H was represented by 19 team members ranging from 4th to 11th grade. The team is coached by Emily Wynn and Eric Taylor. Assistant coaches are Cody Jimmerson and Danielle James.
“Livestock judging is alive and well in Dallas County! Every week 21 kids meet to discuss and judge livestock. This is the most participation we had in the past 12 years. These kids all love livestock judging and I am so proud of each and every one of them. As a coach is it nice to have former 4-H judging team members come back and help out each week as assistant coaches. We are very excited for a fun and successful year ahead!” said Emily Wynn.
Iowa 4-H Judging Contests are for the 4-H’ers to learn modern livestock and meat evaluation methods, practice decision-making and communication skills and develop the ability to select livestock appropriate for a defined production purpose. Participation on a judging team enhances a student’s ability to think reason and make decisions, and to communicate with others.

4-H Club Machine Magicians Win 2nd Place!
Dallas County Machine Magicians 4-H competed in the State First Lego League tournament held at Iowa State University January 14th.
The club won 2nd place for their Project Innovative Solution.
The competition consisted of 60 teams of 9- to 14- year olds that have advanced from regional competitions from around Iowa. They also competed in the Global Innovation Award presentations.
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international program, created by FIRST® and LEGO® , designed to get children interested in and excited about science, technology and engineering. This year’s theme was hydrodynamics. Teams each had to identify a water problem, research it, design a solution and share their ideas with competition judges. The teams were also evaluated on their LEGO robot’s performance and design, a research presentation and team interviews on design and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) core values.
Their project is called Stop Drop, it is an app that connects with a flow meter device placed on waterlines throughout your house. The app shows how much water you are using right to your smart phone. It also has a mini game with water conservation facts. It’s main application is for household use to monitor usage or leaky toilets/pipes. Another use is monitoring filling water tanks in an agricultural setting.
“The kids got the idea for the project from all the fitness trackers out there that track your steps, this tracks your water usage. The more you know the more you can do! ” said Rebecca Smith the club leader.
The Magician Magicians team consist of 9 youth from the Adel area. They have been practicing for 4 months to prepare for competition.

Dallas County Rep for National 4-H Youth Summit

Grace Kruse, a Dallas Center-Grimes High School senior has been chosen as Dallas County 4-H representative for the 2018 National 4-H Youth Summit for Healthy Living.
The National 4-H Youth Summit for Healthy Living is a four day conference for high school youth held February 16-19 at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
This event will develop youth knowledge and skills in addressing today’s health related issues including nutrition education, physical fitness, wellness, and emotional wellbeing.
Grace has been an active member of Dallas County 4-H for 9 years and has served as both Vice President and Secretary for the Dallas County Saddlelites 4-H Club. Grace has participated in horse shows at both the county and state fair level, where she won multiple awards for poles and barrel racing.
She is a member of the varsity Cross Country and soccer teams, an honor roll student and a silver cord volunteer. Grace works as a lifeguard and a Certified Nursing Assistant. She has also shared her knowledge with younger youth by serving as a Sunday school teacher.
Grace is planning to attend a state university next year and major in Human Physiology.
At the summit, youth will participate in a variety of workshops, learn from professionals in these related fields, and create action plans to implement projects to promote healthy living back in their communities.
The structure of the summit maximizes the amount of hands-on learning experiences and translates that learning to direct outcomes. The youth leaders representing Iowa will share about their learning experiences with other youth upon their return

Beekeeping Basics Class in Adel – February 27th

Beekeeping has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years as more people purchase hives for their homes and farms.
Zack Koopman, ISU Agriculture Specialist, will lead a two-hour ‘Beekeeping Basics’ course designed to introduce the fundamentals of beekeeping and help attendees decide if this hobby is right for them.

Terry Traveler – New Year Thoughts
Good friends, gather round! It is the end of a long, stressful year and I, your devoted writer, poet, taxidermist Terry Traveler, am here to remind you of sunshine!
Welcome to 2018!
You see, the point of New Years is hope for the future and what this next year will bring. The end of 2017 felt simultaneously underwhelming and overwhelming. Why? Because of the Potential each year holds.
As 2017 fades in our memory, we are reminded of things that bothered us, things like missing out on the Annual Rain Dance Festival in Detroit. Things that made us sad, like that time my car got towed on the way to the Annual Rain Dance Festival in Detroit.
Or mad, like that time I got a completely unjustified ticket for driving a big rig without a valid US license on my way to the Annual Rain Dance Festival in Detroit. For you see, I had my Argentinian license, but not my diplomatic papers to support the validity of the Argentinian license. I left those in my other parka. It was an ordeal.
But I’m here to help you forget about all that Annual Rain Dance Festival nonsense because you know what? I know a secret. And that secret? I’ll tell you. 2018 is going to be an incredible year. And the sheer fact that I know that is very weird indeed.
You see, each year has such great potential that we have a mix of emotions come January. We say goodbye to all the potential 2017 had in store, just 12 short months ago, and turn rapidly into a brave new era! An endless era of bright sunny days with endless chances to go vegan for a week or rent a paddle boat for a month. With the tick of a clock and freshly minted list of resolutions, our Potential Meter is refilled. 2018, in all its glory, is full of that sweet, sweet elixir, Potential.
Some people don’t like the New Year and to them I say, be quiet, its a beginning. Think not of the end, think not of chances missed, think not of past wasted days playing Pokemon Go and the subsequent (and nearly instantaneous) forgetting of your obsession with Pokemon Go.
Think only of all the goals you see yourself achieving in the next 365 days. Think fondly of each of those 525,600 minutes you can spend cultivating a garden or learning Spanish or renting a paddle boat!

4-H Club Machine Magicians – Champions And More

The Dallas County 4-H club Machine Magicians joined more than 100 students in the First Lego League regional qualifying competition on Sunday, December 17th at Johnston High School.
Teams are required to build robotic machines from Legos to perform pre-determined missions and are judged on their robot game, the robot design, their core values (team work) and the project.
The project is an innovative solution to a real life problem pertaining to the theme, which is Hydrodynamics this year. Machine Magicians won Champion and the Global Innovation Award for the research that pertains to their project.
The Dallas County 4-H club is led by Rebecca and Cliff Smith. They have been meeting for 3 years. “The kids have been working hard since the beginning of September and seeing their faces when the awards were announced was priceless!” said leader Rebecca Smith.
Teams that performed well on Sunday will advance on to the state competition at Iowa State University on January 14th.
