With flea and tick time upon us, The Animal Hospital of Adel has some helpful answers.

Can I apply Frontline anywhere on my pet’s hair?
-Frontline works best through the skin’s sebaceous glands, it has to be applied directly to the skin, not the haircoat.

How long does it take for fleas to die?
-Frontline starts killing fleas upon contact. Fleas do not have to bite a treated pet for Frontline to work.

Why am I seeing fleas on my dog after applying Frontline?
-You may see fleas on top of the haircoat. This is an indication that Frontline is working. Because Frontline kills fleas by overstimulating their nervous systems, hyperexcited fleas may move to the top of the haircoat before they die.

Can my dog be bathed or go swimming after applying Frontline?
-Frontline products are waterproof and remain effective even if a dog swims or is bathed. The important thing to remember is to wait 48 hours after bathing or swimming before applying Frontline, and wait 48 hours after applying before allowing your pet to get wet.

I applied Frontline two weeks ago – why are there still fleas visible?
-You are now seeing new fleas hatching from eggs and larvae that were present in the environment before the first treatment of Frontline. Keep treating monthly for at least 3-4 months to bring the flea population under control. For effective flea and tick control, apply Frontline monthly throughout the year – fleas can live year-round.

Do I need to use a flea and tick product on my indoor-only cat?
-Yes. Although your cat may not go outside, you, or other pets in the household, may bring fleas into the home. These fleas may infest the untreated cat or lead to a flea infestation in the house.
