Terry Traveler – Another Close Encounter

Terry Traveller

Once again, this explains a lot about our intrepid explorer. – Editor

Ah, Iowa summers. They remind me of New Mexico winters. Terry Traveler here, remembering another tale of questionable origin. But this time, the question of origin is out of this world.

You see, the questions of life, the universe, and everything have always played heavily in my mind and once, when I was young and bright-eyed, I had the notion that I could find those answers out there among the stars.

I was back packing through the southwest along the Extraterrestrial Highway- a span of road so dark I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face, let alone the thumb I was sporting in an attempt to get a ride. I had just resolved myself that the search was hopeless when I tripped over a large, squishy lump. I apologized, as I often do with chairs or coffee tables, when I saw a flash of light reflected back to me.

Two large, dishpan eyes stared up at me from the huddled mass. I held my breath and tried to remember that book I had pretended to read about wolves in the third grade. Our eyes were locked as I slowly realized it appeared to be standing, long arms and slender hands on hips, with its gigantic head cocked to one side. I swear I heard it say, “Nice parka you got there.”

A million thoughts raced through my mind as I stood frozen: ALIEN! Why hadn’t I listened to my mother? I knew they were real! AHH! What was in those brownies? Can it read my thoughts? They weren’t MY brownies, I was just holding them for a friend! ALIEN! ALIEN! ALIEN!

And then I passed out.

I awoke in the hospital several days later. The doctors claimed that I had been left outside the emergency room doors with a note pinned to my orange parka, “Idiot has Heat Stroke”.

Apparently wearing a fur lined mountain coat was not the best choice for the dessert terrain. No one believed my story; instead I was told that I had been hallucinating from the heat, probably tripped over a rock, and hit my head.

When I got home I felt relieved to put the affair behind me and return to the truth of my gonzo journalism. That was, until a postcard arrived a few days later, postmarked Roswell, New Mexico. The message? “Nice parka you got there, Terry.”

This is Terry Traveler saying, you don’t have to believe me, but I know you want to.

Photos From Adel Fareway Ribbon Cutting Opening Day

[nggallery id=29] Fareway Adel Iowa

Folks from Adel, Earlham, Redfield, Desoto and Minburn turned out in full force to welcome Fareway to Adel Wednesday.

The parking lot was full by 9:30 a.m. for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Customers were already lining up outside to start shopping when the store opened at 10:00 a.m.

There is a  definite “Wow!” factor to the new store. From the spacious layout, fully stocked meat department, to the professional and friendly staff.

The store’s five checkout lanes ran nonstop through out the day as the checkers cheerfully greeted each customer. The sackers worked as a well practiced drill team as they delivered the groceries to each customers vehicle.

Be sure to stop out to the new store and get your “Wow.”

Terry Traveller Visits River Valley Golf Course in Adel

Win 2 Free Golf Passes to the River Valley Golf Course in Adel Iowa with DiscoverAdel.com!I love to golf and in Adel there is no better spot than the River Valley Golf Course.

Most of my winter is spent counting down the days to the first blustery days of spring when I can finally hit the greens. And in the middle of March, I was out there, a wide smile across my face, (more…)

Terry Visits Baldon & Son Hardware

As the weather gets nicer, I start getting the home remodeling bug.

My house is in a constant state of change and this spring I decided to build a new room. Thank goodness for Baldon & Son Hardware in Adel!

The staff at Baldon’s is very helpful and friendly. Every time I came in I was welcomed and assisted right away.

Some trips I knew what I needed, other times I needed help troubleshooting. Many of my plumbing plunders over the years have been fixed by making a short visit to Baldon’s.

One of the best things about Baldon and Son Hardware is location. It never fails, I’ll be in the middle of a project, covered in dirt or paint, and the one thing I need, I don’t have.

To run to Des Moines takes the time to clean up, drive in, find a parking space, find the part (without help), drive back, and put my work clothes back on. All said and done I’m looking at 2 or 3 hours of project time lost. Running to Baldon’s and back takes 10 minutes max.

With the helpful service, reasonable prices and saving on gasoline, that’s a great deal in my book.

The room is done and looks great. Now I just need a set of doorknobs… Baldon’s here I come!

Terry Visits Patrick’s Restaurant

I love telling my friends about the restaurants I find on my travels. Trying new and exciting places is always a good thing.

But sometimes I want traditional, down-home cooking. That’s when I head to Patrick’s.

I’ve eaten at Patrick’s Restaurant many times this month. I enjoyed breakfast on two different occasions.

Nothing beats diner-style hash browns with onions and cheese. (It’s a special request item but they were happy to indulge me.)

I had lunch with family, my Grandmother loved the Chicken Pot Pie soup and my brother in-law liked the pork tenderloin sandwich with onion rings.

I had dinner at Patrick’s just a few nights ago. The service was excellent! As soon as I sat down the waitress greeted me and filled my coffee cup. It’s nice to see that customer service remains strong in Adel! They serve a great Prime Rib on Friday nights. My friend enjoyed the ribs. I recommend saving room for dessert, the pie is awesome.

So, if you’re looking for comfort food, head to Patrick’s. It’s affordable, tastes great, offers a wide range of options and the service is always friendly and efficient.
