Vol. 62 December 2013
Dear Friend of Adel,

One of my favorite memories of Christmas barely involves me. It was the year all three of my daughters were in college and their money was tight.

My mother was coming for the week and one of our traditions was for the five of us to go shopping and take in a meal during the holiday. My mother had started it when the girls were in elementary school and it was a highlight of the holiday.

My mother and I always fought over who would pay the check. No matter who "won", the other would smile and insist on leaving the tip. Unfortunately, that year I had to work. I asked the girls to continue the tradition and take their Grandmother out to lunch, my treat (tip included).

They agreed and went out the day before Christmas. They has a wonderful time, visiting well into the afternoon. When the check came, my oldest put the assigned money in the folder,  then she silently added 20% of her own money to the folder as the tip. This was silently repeated by everyone at the table.

As they were leaving their server ran up to them saying, "WAIT, there's been a mistake. You've left twice the cost of the meal!" They smiled at her, told her it was her's and to have a "Merry Christmas." The server wiped her eyes, gave them all a hug and said, "You too, have a Merry Christmas!"

When they got home they handed me $20.00 as my change. I said, oh, you were supposed to leave it all to cover the tip. They just smiled at me.

This month we have a jam packed issue of Adel events for December. So, grab a cup of coffee, get comfortable for a great read, and remember to tip your server.

We look forward to seeing you in Adel this month and wish you a Merry Christmas.

Chris

Next 2 New Adel Iowa Shopping in Adel, Iowa just got trendy. Whether you are looking for retro decorations, vintage furniture, funky finds, cool clothing, or one-of-a-kind gifts, Next 2 New Clothing Consignment Shop has something for everyone.

Join us Saturday December 7th to celebrate the Grand Opening of the new location!

Owner Shannen Bargman grew up in the retail business environment at her mother's side, and has always wanted her own store.

The idea of a consignment shop was born out of a need to reduce overhead while maintaining quality control. After visiting other consignment stores, Shannen knew what she liked about those business models, and what she could do better.

Next 2 New Adel Iowa

She knew she wanted an uncluttered, clean store with quality products, a welcoming atmosphere for vendors, a place where local artists could sell their wares, and enough space to showcase the items and give customers room to browse.

In March 2011, Next 2 New began selling like-new consignment clothing at bargain prices in Adel. The small clothing store became successful when women of all sizes began finding quality, name-brand items for a steal. Soon, the store was full of clothing, purses, belts, and shoes. It was apparent that more room was needed for the shop to grow.

Next 2 New Adel Iowa

Next 2 New Adel Iowa

This November, Shannen and Next 2 New moved to their new storefront at 215 South 6th Street, Suite B, next to the new Anytime Fitness location.

The new store has 4800 square feet of space, with a dedicated section for clothing and apparel. Customers are encouraged to bring their seasonal Children- Adult size casual and business apparel, shoes, boots, and accessories for resale.

All items must be clean, free of holes and wrinkles, and of today's styles. To learn more about selling your clothing through Next 2 New's consignment program, please visit www.nexttonewadel.webs.com.

The bright overhead lights help customers examine items, and the new changing rooms are spacious and inviting. The expanded space has brought in more clothing for men, women, and children alike, and has allowed Shannen to expand her offerings to include housewares, furniture, and gifts.

Next 2 New Adel Iowa In the past five years consignments stores have taken off with the rebirth of antiquing - what some call "picking", named for the act of literally picking through piles of discarded items for something special.

For diehard pickers, nothing beats spending hours in a rundown barn full of unknown treasures, except maybe the hours of work put into making old items shine like new.

For the casual customer who wants to add a splash of whimsy to their home, picking can seem like a daunting task. That's where the modern consignment store comes into play.

At Next 2 New, Shannen works with a group of select vendors to identify what types of items her customers will enjoy. This can be a difficult task as "funky finds" may spark an image of flowery Victorian wallpaper for some, and barn wood signage for others.

Next 2 New does a good job of covering all the modern trends:

  • Up-Cycle: Artists use items that have been thrown away to create a new product. Up-cycled items tend to combine materials in creative ways, such as upholstering discarded chair frames with boat sails.
  • Vintage: An item that is easily recognized with the era it was made, such as a Herman Eames- style dresser circa 1960. True vintage items are more than 20 years old. Next 2 New has a growing collection of dressers, china hutches, bed frames, chairs and more.
  • Retro: new or used items that imitate the design or styles of the recent past. This may include a vintage 1980's top with polka dots, or a new pair of skinny jeans designed like those worn by Aubrey Hepburn in the 1950's.
  • Re-Purpose: similar to up-cycling, materials are given a second chance to be something new. Check out the spoon jewelry made by Adel resident Fred Pruitt!
  • Handmade: Products crafted by hand. Handmade items tend to be one of a kind; when made in bulk they have slight variations that make each item unique.
  • Crafts: Craft items are handmade, and may include mass produced items that have been augmented. Picture frames with added decorations can be found at Next 2 New.

Next 2 New Adel Iowa

In addition to clothing and housewares, Shannen has a large display of Scentsy wax melts and electric warmers for sale, and in use throughout the space.

Shannen has select melts and warmers on hand, and can order any items you would like from the Scentsy catalog for pick up at the store.

Next 2 New Adel Iowa

Join Shannen and Next 2 New in Adel on Saturday, December 7th for the Grand Opening celebration!

The store will be open regular hours from 9-4pm, with raffles, door prizes, giveaways, food, and wine samples from Adel's own Penoach Winery.

Stop in to congratulate Shannen on the new location and enjoy a consignment store that's a whole lot more for that perfect find!

Recipe of the Month
DDiscover Chef
Cookie Butter Puppy Chow

Each year my wife and daughters get together to bake for the holidays.

They gather together with aprons and slippers in our kitchen and make batch after batch of cookies, caramels, candies and treats to share with family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

In years past more than 15 different confections would be made over many days, all to be happily devoured in the matter of moments.

Lori would hunt for new recipes to try, and the girls would learn how to make the traditional requests.

In recent years my daughters have started adding their own recipes to the mix, and Lori has parred down the selection to 5 or 6 of her favorite recipes.

Many of those recipes cannot be shared online because of the  intuitive nature required to make outstanding candies.

Last year, the girls came up with a new puppy chow recipe that combines Lori's passion for holiday baking with our daughters' "out of a box" baking style.

Using Trader Joe's famous Crunchy Cookie Butter- ground Belgian cookies called Speculoos with a gingerbread-like flavor resembling peanut butter.

The result is addictive and hard to share, you have been warned!

Ingredients

1 Jar Trader Joe's Crunchy Cookie Butter
5 C. Corn Chex Mix
5 C. Rice Chex Mix
1 (24oz.) package Vanilla Almond Bark
1 t. Vanilla
1 t. Lemon Flavoring
3 C. Powdered Sugar (Approx.)

Directions

1. In a large bowl mix both types of Chex Mix.

2. In a separate, microwave safe bowl, empty the container of Cookie Butter and microwave in 30 second bursts until melted, stirring between bursts to prevent burning.

3. Pour the cookie butter over the cereal and stir until coated.

4. In a third bowl, melt the almond bark following the instructions on the package. Once melted, add the Vanilla and Lemon flavorings, stir to combine.

5. Pour the Almond Bark mixture over the cereal, stir until coated.

6. Pour the cereal mixture into a large, 2-gallon food-storage plastic bag. Add the Powdered Sugar.

7. Make sure to seal the top of the bag and shake until coated. If the cereal is still sticky, add more Powdered Sugar.

8. Spread the Puppy Chow on waxed paper to cool.

9. To maintain freshness, and prevent a sugary mess, store Puppy Chow in an airtight container in refrigerator.

Enjoy!
