Shop Local Challenge

Last year, DiscoverAdel.com challenged our Staff Writer Katrina Brocka to shop local for the holidays- everything from decorations to gifts and holiday meals.

Her shopping list consisted of 15 gift recipients ages 5-75, four holiday potlucks, one Secret Santa item, and one decorative store front window.

With 30 days to shop and a limited budget, Katrina completed the challenge and purchased everything she needed, right here in Adel.

This month, we spoke with Katrina about the experience, her tips for shopping local, and challenge you to shop Adel this holiday season!

Penoach Winery - Adel Iowa
"As a kid, my two sisters and I would shop at Ben Franklin's and other downtown shops for Christmas because we could walk to the stores. We would go up town, two at a time, and pick out gifts for the third sister. It was always fun to go shopping in Adel. When we got our licenses, it was cool to shop in Des Moines, and I guess we fell out of practice shopping local.

About 10 years ago, we started DiscoverAdel.com and over the years I've had the honor of interviewing dozens of people about their businesses. I've learned how my purchases are being reinvested in the community. Now that I live in Adel, shopping local has become more than a philosophy, its the small town way of life."

For the Shop Adel Challenge, the rules were simple.
1) If you need it for the holidays, you must buy it in Adel.
2) Set a budget and stick to it.

To succeed at the Shop Adel Challenge, your first step is to make a shopping list. Brocka found that making a list of gift recipients was easier than planning what to buy each person.

"Gift buying is a big deal for me; I put a lot of thought into the items I pick out because I don't follow gift registries or wish lists- its all tie backs to previous conversations about wants and needs. Personally, I wander through stores and find inspiration. If its one-of-a-kind, unique, sentimental, or screams the recipient's name, that's what I pick out.

NAPA Adel Iowa
That's what made shopping local so much fun- I knew, for example, I needed something for my grandfather. I knew his love of cars so I stopped by NAPA for inspiration. Owner John Standley pointed out several gift ideas, including a classic replica of an old NAPA truck. It was just like the one my grandpa used to drive, and it would add to his collection of NAPA metal toys.

I never would have planned to buy him that truck; I went into the store with a vague idea, and left with a memory that made my grandfather happy It was like that for all my friends and family members.

I entered a store with someone in mind, talked to the owner for ideas, and walked away with something just right."

The next step is to make a list of resources. For this, she used the  DiscoverAdel.com Business Directory of 50003 businesses, Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce website, and local newspapers. It is important to check the hours of operation for the business, and determine if it is home-based or a stand alone business. Facebook pages are a great way to window shop as well.

"My favorite part of the Shop Local challenge was finally shopping at all the cool stores in Adel. I used to find myself saying, 'I want to go there" but never seemed to get around to it.

During the challenge, I made a list of all the places in Adel that I wanted to see, and made a point of visiting each one. I made sure to research the businesses- looked them up on Facebook, found their hours, browsed their items to get a feel for the store, and made a schedule. I

'm now a regular at shops I used to only dream about visiting. Shopping local got easier because of the challenge- I met the business owners and got to know them. When holidays, anniversaries, or birthdays come up, I think Adel first without really thinking about it. I just check out my favorite stores, which happen to be in Adel!"

At first, Katrina was worried she wouldn't find the specific items she wanted for her storefront window design. By the end of the challenge, she found plenty of options that accomplished her look.

Salvage This - Adel Iowa
Salvage This
"We don't really think about shopping anymore, because we can go to a mega store that has everything in one place. We walk the aisles and buy based on impulse. When it came to the window design, I was nervous because I had a vision I wanted to pull off and I was concerned about finding the variety I needed.

Not because of Adel, because I have funky tastes. So I put my thinking cap on and thought about the departments I would have shopped through. I correlated that to shops in town (lights=hardware store, ornaments=gift shops, ect.) I found plenty of options, and was often surprised how unique each item was.

It took a little longer than one trip to a mega store, and it was worth it. I now have one-of-a-kind items I would never have found otherwise."

Holiday potlucks were made easy with return trips to the local grocery store and catering from local restaurants. Katrina also purchased groceries for her line of handmade body scrubs and foot soaks.

Adel-Fareway

"I have to say, I love Fareway. They have a great selection and pretty much everything I needed for the potlucks. I made a few alterations to recipes because they don't carry every brand I prefer to buy, and no one knew the wiser. For the few ingredients I couldn't find for my spa items, I called the store and special ordered them. When it came to catering, I knew I could count on our Adel restaurants. Over the holiday season we enjoyed food from all over town, and it was always a hit."

Sticking to her budget seemed tough at times, until she compared her gasoline bill from the previous Christmas.

Mikes Adel Power Equipment

"In 2015 I made 15+ trips to the metro for groceries, holiday parties, and gifts. After it was all said and done, I had spent more than $250 on gas alone. During the challenge, I was able to put some of that money towards purchases and saved overall. I saved money, got to avoid the crazy crowds, reinvested in my community, and my friends and family were happy.

That's win-win-win in my book. I'm looking forward to shopping in Adel for the holidays- I can't wait to check out the new businesses around town, and snoop through the holiday open houses, then there are Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales, it's going to be great."

This year, take the Shop Adel Challenge yourself. Check out the DiscoverAdel.com Business Directory to find local businesses offering unique gifts for the whole family, on any budget.

Veterans Day
Veterans Day November 11th Observed November 10th*

Originally called "Armistice Day", it marked the events on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month when an armistice was signed with the Germans and World War I was over

An Act approved May 13th, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year to make it a legal holiday;

"A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

In 1953 a Bill was passed that expanded Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans. In 1954 Congress changed the name to Veteran's Day.

Remember to fly your flag in honor of those who have served and thank a Vet.

* Because most Federal Employees work on a Monday to Friday schedule, when a holidays falls on a weekend the holiday is observed on the closest regular workday. The holiday is observed on Friday if the holiday falls on Saturday and Monday if the holiday falls on Sunday (5 U.S.C. 6103 (b)(2)).

Recipes From Home
Recipe From Home - Lasagna
Lasagna has always been a discussion in our house. You'd think it was pretty simple: layer red sauce, noodles, meat and cheese; repeat until pan is full. But each person makes it differently, so finding "the one" recipe to share took some discussion.

Some of us make sauce from scratch, a couple doctor-up store bought jars, a few refuse to fuss and use store bought straight from the can.

The Great Cheese Debate is now in its 17th year with no clear winner in sight as we continue to argue Mozzarella v. Ricotta v. Cottage Cheese. Oven Ready Noodles or Not Oven Ready Noodles, that is the question we sought to answer.

Ultimately, we realized the recipe wasn't important, nor was the debate. It was coming together as a family, setting aside our lasagna differences, and enjoying a meal together. So, in that spirit, what you find below is not "our" recipe for lasagna. It is, instead, our recipe for a warm family gathering featuring lasagna.

Lasagna:
Ingredients:
1 Box Oven Ready Noodles
1 Jar Store Bought Red Sauce
2 C. Tomato Juice (V8 works well)
2 C. Mozzarella
1 C. Cottage/ Ricotta Cheese
2 Eggs
1/2 lbs Ground Beef
1/2 lbs Italian Sausage
8 T. Italian Seasonings

Cheese Topping
1 C. Mozzarella Cheese
1/2 C. Parmesan Cheese

Directions:
In large bowl combine Eggs, Cheeses, and 4 T. Italian Seasonings. Cover and chill. Brown
ground meat, drain and discard excess fat.

Layer 9x9 pan as follows:
Layer 1: 1/2 C. Red Sauce, Single Layer Noodles, Cheese Mix, Ground Meat.

Layer 2: Noodles, Cheese Mix, Meat, 1/2 C. Red Sauce.

Layer 3: Noodles, Cheese Mix, Meat, Noodles.
Combine remaining Red Sauce, Italian Seasonings and Tomato Juice in large pitcher using whisk. Pour along edge of pan, into corners, and over top layer of noodles.

At this point it can frozen for a later date or stored over night in the refrigerator. Both methods blend the flavors well.

Cover with foil and bake at 425 degrees for 35 minutes. Uncover and check noodle tenderness.

Once fully baked, cover with Cheese Topping and bake until cheese is golden brown.

- Enjoy!

Terry Traveller Adel Oiwa
Terry's  Shopping Adventure
It was a brisk December day, full of big grey clouds and windy breezes. I was in a large metropolis, a city known for its shopping extravaganzas. All I can say is, you'd think they have the parking lot of America to go with the Mall of America.

I had spent the day wandering from store to store when I happened upon a nameless place marked only with a large bullseye out front. To this day I have no idea what store I was in when the dastardly deed took place, only that it was very green, or perhaps very red, inside.

Upon entering the store my senses were hit by the pungent aroma of that bitter seductress known as coffee. I stood in line, patiently making small talk with fellow shoppers, most of whom felt it unwise to distract the barista who seemed new to the job. 15 minutes later I had procured the perfect cup of overpriced coffee and began my journey. Little did I know, the journey had just begun.

As my shopping list is alphabetical, I wandered to and fro back and forth across the store, sipping my deliciously complicated drink order. It was at "P" for Pens that I realized my hand had grown cold, and alas my drink was no where to be found! I began to pace the store, frantically looking for my cup of coffee. How abandoned it must feel! I became hysterical, visualizing my poor solo cup, lost and alone. Had some stranger picked up my cup from a clearance bin and only now, realized it was not a decorative lamp?

Hours later, when I thought all hope was lost, I spied my cup of coffee. Oh, I'd recognize it anywhere, with its white lid and brown sleeve. It sat alone on a dusty shelf next to a landline telephone I had considered purchasing for the collectible value. My overwhelming relief was halted when, just before I took a sip, a rather angry bystander accused me of stealing his tea! The next 30 minutes are a blur of explanations, 1st degree burns, security guards, mall prison, and the lingering aftertaste of green tea. I never did get to buy my pens, which they have now discontinued, thank you very much, nor did I find my elusive cup of coffee. I can only hope it was found by a loving, caring individual with the means to give it a respectable life.

And that, my friends, is exactly why I don't shop at the mall.
