Dear Lori
November is here and it marks a family tradition at our house.
Every year I play Clark Griswald and brave the winter (we usually go now when it's nice) out into the woods (it's actually a friend's tree farm located next to his folk's house), hike several miles (we drive right up to the trees) spend two hours finding the right tree (this part is true) and finally put our name on the "perfect" tree.
Then we cut it down Thanksgiving Day and strap it on the station wagon (actually he puts it in the back of the truck as he joins us for Thanksgiving dinner at my in laws) and we sing Christmas songs (listen to Bob Marley ) all the way home.
We spend the three day weekend decorating the house inside and out (I've been told "you can't hang the outside lights in August when the weather is good").
This year we're bundling up the grand kids and taking them with us to pick out the right tree (I may have to throw some Christmas music on the iPod) and start a new tradition.
This month we had the pleasure to sit down with Adam Harrigton, Vice-President of Base® in Adel.
We've also got information on Adel HealthMart's Holiday Open House, Park Place's Winter Ball, an All You Can Eat Waffle Feed, news from the Library, an update on their great Outreach Programs from the Methodist Church, a Recipe From Home and Much More!
Have a great Thanksgiving!. We look forward to seeing you in Adel this month!

Adam Harrington - BASE®
|
| Adam Harrington | With an election on the way, and major healthcare changes in the works, everyone is wondering how the next few years will affect their lives.
This month, we spoke with Adam Harrington, Vice President of BASE® to learn how this growing office in Adel's business park plans for the future.
First and foremost, it is important to understand that BASE does not sell insurance; rather it is a third-party Benefits Administration company working with the self-employed and small to medium business owners to make health care expenses tax deductible or tax-free.
This includes setting up Employer plans to ensure compliance, the review and processing health care claims, and working with governmental agencies to adhere to changing regulations and privacy acts.
As healthcare laws change and more individuals will need or be required to purchase health insurance, Adam expects that individuals will also pursue the tax advantages BASE plans can offer.
Started in Urbandale in 1999, BASE originally sold one product, catered specifically to small "mom & pop" family shops. As their customers' businesses began to grow, so did BASE.
Moving to Adel in 2001 the company scouted a prime location in the city's budding business park, located on the western side of town. Designed expressly for this purpose, the business park provides light industrial and corporate office space, ample parking, and build-to-suit business accommodations.
The company now offers a more diverse portfolio of Health Care Administration plans for businesses of 1 to 800 employees, which include:
BASE HRA Available to small business owners with three employees or less, especially applicable to owners that can legitimately hire their spouse, to enable them to deduct up to 100% of their family's qualifying medical expenses as a business deduction. The BASE HRA typically saves a small business an additional $4000 a year in taxes.
BASE 125 Cafeteria Plan Allow employees who are paying medical expenses, insurance premiums or dependant care expenses to do so on a pre-tax basis while creating a sizeable savings for both the employer and employee.
BASE HRA + Linked Available for employers with a group health insurance plan in place who are looking to keep the same insurance coverage for their employees but reduce the overall cost.
BASE HRA + Non Linked Provides employees with a specific allotment of benefit dollars to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses such as co-pays, deductibles, eye care, dental care and more with tax-free benefit dollars.
BASE works with independent insurance agents, agencies, financial planners and accountants who suggest their products as a means to reduce overall employer costs to supply employees with cost effective health care options. While still gaining ground locally, BASE can boast multiple referring agencies and proud customers who use their products in the Adel area.
BASE is the ideal Adel business, employing a staff of 28 people (half of whom live in Adel), reviewing $1.2 million of medical claims per month, with clients in all 50 states. Feedback illustrates that strong Midwest values and high quality service help customers feel comfortable and confident, especially when faced with the ever-changing nature of healthcare. As governmental regulations change, BASE is committed to providing up-to-date plan information and innovative changes to help control the rising cost of health benefits to employers and employees.
BASE is also a proud sponsor of the Dallas County Fair, Crisis Intervention Center, and American Cancer Society. As voted on by BASE employees, the main focus of the company's ongoing charitable support is given to the John D. Gomke Charity Golf Classic, raising $5151.37 for the 2012 event.
The local charity benefits organizations that assist in caring for and providing resources to sick infants and families who have lost infants in and around Central Iowa while raises funds to provide CPR certification courses, and portable automatic external deliberators to community schools.
"We are in a smaller community and we know there is always a need for medical equipment. The John D. Gomke charity hit home with lots of us and we decided that we should focus on something with an immediate impact to our area that is near and dear to our hearts."
Adam and his new wife Laura enjoy living in the Adel area and hope to move closer to the community soon. "We get out... we enjoy the metro... but it's because it feels like a treat. We get the big city feel then its, 'I'm glad to be home again.'"
And Adel is proud to be called home base.

Operation Christmas Child - 2012 Campaign
| Operation Christmas Child
National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child is November 12 - 19th.
Last year was such a success, and we hope that this year will be even better!
With serving over 130 countries and more than 8.5 million children each year, this year will be monumental in achieving 100 million gift-filled shoe boxes to children around the world.
The most precious gift that accompanies each box is the Good News of Jesus Christ. How incredible it is to have the opportunity to share the love of Jesus and the salvation He gives to all of His beautiful children all over the earth!
These gifts, although simple, are life changing for the children who receive them. The gift-filled shoe box is usually the only gift that the children living in poverty, disease, and desperate situations have ever gotten.
It gives them hope that the world cares about them, and even more importantly, that God loves them and sent his Son to save them and give them new life.
In addition to the boxed gift, children also receive a book, The Greatest Journey, which is a discipleship program. The children also receive medical attention, nutrition, and temporary shelter as Samaritan's Purse works to provide relief.
Please consider donating a gift-filled shoe box/plastic container for Operation Christmas Child this year! Small, inexpensive toys, school supplies, hygiene items, clothing, and candy are the simple items that build a box and bring so much joy to a child.
More information about how to build a box, as well as stories of how the boxes have touched so many lives, can be found online at Samaritanspurse.org/OCC.
It is suggested that a check to Samaritan's Purse for $7 be included with each box to help cover the cost of shipping.
The Dallas County drop-off site for the boxes will be the Adel United Methodist Church at 115 South 10th & Prairie in Adel.
The hours for receiving will be Monday - Friday (Nov. 12 - 16) hours are 4:00-6:00 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. - Noon Sunday hours are 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 19th (final day), boxes can be dropped off 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
The ramp on the south side of the building (Prairie Street) will be available to use to drop off the gifts. Volunteers will be there to greet you!
Thank you for your part in this incredible outreach! May you experience the joy of giving and the blessings of our Savior as we work to spread His message of love to the world!

Recipe of the Month
| | "Do Something Else" Italian Bake
I love being Grandpa. Every time I turn around the kids are getting bigger and faster!
My schedule is flexible, as I'm part night owl, allowing me to have more time with my grandkids.
After enjoying a few hours of motorcycle rides on my knee, building and tearing down towers of blocks, and dragging every toy imaginable from one side of the house to the other, it's nice to sit back in "Bampa's" chair with a few Dr. Seuss books and relax.
Of course, normally that's about the time the kids start to get hungry.
Years ago, as a new father we owned a cafe. It was normal to put my daughter on my hip and run around the kitchen cooking.
I'd pour coffee, flip burgers, and bus tables with one free arm.
That was then.
Now, it can be challenging to make a peanut butter sandwich with three kids under 3, sitting and running at the same time.
This 2 pan, oven recipe is perfect for anyone looking to multitask: the ingredients require little preparation, and it can be altered to fit your budget and tastes.
This recipe easily feeds 4.
"Do Something Else" Italian Bake
Ingredients
1 Can Diced Tomatoes (Plain or Italian Seasoned)
1/2 pound Ground Italian Sausage (fresh)
5 Mushrooms
1 small Onion, diced
1 small Eggplant, diced
1 clove Garlic, crushed
1 T. Italian Seasoning
1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder
1 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
1/8 tsp. Salt
2 T. Olive Oil
1 box Angel Hair Pasta
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degree.
2. Grease 8x8 oven safe pan with olive oil.
Be sure to coat the sides. Layer in pan as follows: diced tomatoes, onion, eggplant, mushrooms and garlic clove.
3. Stir slightly, just enough to combine.
4. Crumble sausage into mixture.
5. Add water, leaving 1/2 inch space at top. Cover with foil.
6. Bake for 45 minutes.
7. Remove foil, bake for additional 30 minutes or until half of the original liquid remains.
8. Let cool while you cook and drain pasta.
9. Spoon sauce over pasta, top with cheese if desired.
Enjoy! |
Veteran's Day
|
Veteran's Day Monday, November 12th.
Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. It is usually observed on the 11th of November. Except when it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then it is observed on the following Monday. Adel has several ways to observe the Holiday. The Penoach American Legion Hall is having a Breakfast November 4th. The ADM Alumni Association has been gathering the names of alumni that served in the military. Captain's Quarters is having Live music November 10th. The Adel Lion's and Boy Scout's will put up flags for the last time in 2012. Most importantly, take a moment to say thank you to the Veteran in your life. |
