Vol. 37 Nov. 2011
Dear Friend,

Another month off the calendar! The stores are switching over from Halloween to Christmas with Thanksgiving almost treated as a forgotten holiday. It isn't forgotten in Adel though, we have at least five ways to celebrate Thanksgiving in this month's newsletter.

Don't forget to vote on the 8th and remember to thank a vet on the 11th!

This month we have an interview with Debra Fuller of Fuller Massage Therapy. We have the latest events from Around Town, news and events from the Adel Public Library, a Recipe from Home, and much more!

Have a great November, we're looking forward to seeing you in Adel this month!

Debra Fuller - Fuller Massage Therapy
Fuller Massage Therapy Adel, Iowa

Debra Fuller
This month we sat down with Debra Fuller of Fuller Massage Therapy.

The studio opened on Greene St. in 2004.

Debra and her husband Kelly moved to Adel to be near his family when he retired from the military.

A year ago she moved into her permanent location on Nile Kinnick Drive, a block south from the downtown square.

Debra is one of those fortunate people who loves what she does.

She discovered as a child that she had an empathy for people and a desire to help them.

She has an Associates degree in Massage Therapy. Her degree required a 1,000 hours to complete with over 80 percent of that time learning about the body.

She studied while living in Nebraska, she certified nationally there, "which is the toughest state to certify in." Debra is certified in Iowa as well.

Historically misunderstood, massage as a field in the United States, has grown in the last 20 years.

Some Benefits of Massage:
  • Relaxation.
  • Increased oxygen to the skin.
  • Relieve back pain and improved range of motion.
  • Reduces medication dependency.
  • Helps with atrophied muscles.
  • Relieves headache pain.
  • Carpal tunnel has 7 trigger points, it can be misdiagnosed due to the complexities of the area.
  • Sports injuries.
  • Help athletes prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
  • Reduce depression and anxiety.

Stress is one of the greatest culprits of not feeling well, it creates a vicious circle that massage breaks. "I'm usually the last to be seen when someone is in pain. I'm not anti doctors or surgery, but massage should be considered as part of the process."

"Massage Therapy is an important tool in remaining healthy when used in conjunction with sleep and nutrition."

Fuller Massage Therapy Adel, Iowa

The office is open Monday through Friday at 8:30 with the last massage starting at 5:30.

Appointment are made a week in advance.

A session usually lasts an hour. Each client fills out a health questionnaire.

There are over 80 different types of massage, each visit is based on the client's needs and may vary from session to session.

Although the first visit can be intimidating, she understands that and respects people's boundaries by only exposing the area that needs to be massaged. You're actually more covered than in the doctor's office.

Debra offers a half hour fully clothed session that is a great introduction to the benefits of massage.

Massages make great gifts and can be purchased online at the website.

In their spare time, Debra and Kelly work on the 3,900 square foot house they built three years ago. They also enjoy spending time with their four children and eight grandchildren.

When I asked about future plans Debra smiled and replied, "I really enjoy living in Adel, doing what I do, and don't ever see a time when I'll retire."

Veteran's Day
November 11th
Flag Day Adel IA
Many of us tend to merge Memorial Day with Veterans Day.

Memorial Day honors those service members who died while serving their country.

Veterans Day also remembers those who died, but it is designated to
honor and thank all living veterans who served honorably in the military. Both in peace and wartime.
Please remember to fly your flag in honor of all who have served and all that do.

Choco Coffee Drops

Years ago, Lori was experimenting with Espresso in her Christmas baking.

"Who doesn't like chocolate and coffee" she asked.

It must be something in our "programmers DNA", but that made sense.

Not your usual Christmas treat, but they've become a tradition.

These are usually one the first things to disappear at family functions.

If you like chocolate covered coffee beans, you're really gonna enjoy these.

1/2 pkg. white almond bark
12 oz. dark Ghirardelli chocolate chips
1 C coarsely ground hazelnuts
1/3 cup finely ground coffee beans (plain or flavored, Lori uses Highlander Grog)
1/3 cup Oreo cookie crumbs

Melt almond bark in microwave approx. 2 min, stirring every 30 sec.

Add chocolate chips, stir until smooth.

Stir in remaining ingredients

Drop by tsp. on wax paper or into miniature baking cups.

Allow to cool.

You can adjust all proportions to taste.

The ground coffee can be strong so start with less.

Great with a cup of coffee!
