Vol. 25 November 2010
Dear Friend,

The newsletter turns two this month. In order to mark our 25th issue we went back and looked at that first issue. A lot has improved since then and we'd like to thank you, our loyal reader, for those many changes. We've had over 60 articles telling you about the great folks in Adel and your feedback has been encouraging. Thank you!

As we start our third year, we've updated the daily site. Check out the story on the new DiscoverAdel, as well as the great interview with Crystal Sharp from the Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic.

We also sat down with Jim Peters as he discussed a Veterans Day Dedication at the school and don't forget to Shop Adel for the Holidays. In addition to those great stories, we have what may be our last update on the brick streets as they work hard to wrap up construction before the snow.

Not to be out done, Terry is moving to an expanded section and as always, we have Recipes From Home, and much more!

We look forward to seeing you in Adel this November!

Enjoy!

Chris

Cedar Creek StaffFeatureAdel, Iowa is home to many great services for your family, and that includes your pets! This month, we spoke with Crystal Sharp of the Cedar Creek Animal Clinic in Adel to find out what makes this clinic great.

The Adel Cedar Creek clinic is a full service, small animal care facility staffed by Dr. Jennifer Hoffelmeyer, Veterinary Technician Crystal Sharp, and Veterinary Assistant Amy Hall.

The Adel office offers many veterinary services in the areas of Diagnostic Imaging, Canine Reproduction, Surgery and Medical Services, and Animal Dentistry.

The Adel Cedar Creek location may be best known for their Canine Reproductive medicine, as it is one of only three semen storage facilities in Iowa. Clients from as far away as Finland, Germany, China, and New Zealand use the Adel Cedar Creek facilities to breed top notch dogs for conformation showing or performance events. To find a full list of Canine Reproductive services, please visit www.cedarcreekanimalclinic.com.

Crystal Sharp has been a Veterinary Technician for 11 years and joined Cedar Creek in July, 2009. Originally from Creston, Crystal grew up in rural Iowa and always knew she wanted to work with animals.

Crystal SharpA pet lover at heart, she has 2 English Mastiffs named Jewel and Molly and 2 cats named Callie and Squeaks.

After high school, Crystal graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a B.S. in Animal Science and a minor in Commercial Agriculture.

Her expertise focuses on small animals in regards to emergency and orthopedic care.

Before joining Cedar Creek, Crystal worked for a specialist in a large Des Moines practice, but the call to work in a smaller operation drew her to Adel.

Crystal's appreciation for animal health has lead to the creation of Cedar Creek Adel's educational opportunities for pet parents including Senior Care and Pet Weight Loss programs.

The Senior Pet program offers education and specialized care for pets 7 and older. While younger kittens and pups may only need to visit the Vet once a year, it is important to keep in mind that pets age 7 times faster than humans. When senior pets make only one yearly visit, it is as if you decided to avoid the doctor for 10 years!

The staff at Adel Cedar Creek know it's very important to see aging pets on a regular basis as they may be able to detect illnesses before they reach an advanced stage. Crystal recommends that animal blood work be done to help prevent illness, especially in cases of kidney or liver disease. These serious problems, when spotted early, may be corrected with simple changes in food or medicine.

One of pet care's fastest growing problems is obesity. The pet Weight Loss program helps educate pet parents about healthy living techniques for their pets. Pet parents have the opportunity to sit down with Crystal for a free nutritional consultation where the pets are weighed and measured. Crystal and the staff are then able to provide great insights to healthy options specialized to your pet's needs.

For example, think about a 1 ounce cube of cheese. That may not seem like very much food to us, but the truth may shock you. To your cat, that same cube of cheese is equal to three hamburgers! Don't worry, Crystal understands pet care can be overwhelming. "That's why we're here! Our job is to educate, and you can always call to ask us questions."

Right now, the Adel Cedar Creek office has 3 active participants in the Weight Loss program, who are all making great strides! For some pets, just changing the brand of food has done the trick. Some have made the change to prescription foods, while others have opted for lower calorie, over the counter foods.

The pets have lost up to 15 pounds in just a few months and their owners can see a difference in the wellness of their pets. The once lethargic, arthritic animals are now able to jump into the truck and go for walks. With education and preventative steps, our pets can live long, happy, healthy lives!

Another preventative step to take is oral care. Did you know that 70% of pets over the age of 3 have an oral disease? Most of these issues lie under the gum line and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Crystal suggests daily brushing, though dental chews can help prevent or delay oral diseases.

Cedar Creek OfficeThat's what makes Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic different. They offer personalized followup and individualized care which can only be obtained in a small, local office.

The staff honors the families they keep healthy with pet birthday cards and Spotlight Family recognition.

About once a quarter, the Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic selects a caring pet family from their list of clients. The Spotlight Family is featured in the Adel Cedar Creek newsletter with a story and photos and receives discounts for purchases at the clinic.

Cedar Creek is always looking for opportunities to get involved with the Adel community. Last winter, Crystal and the crew offered Holiday cards and gifts and plans to continue the tradition in the following month! Turning the exam room into a mini photo studio, the team has a great time taking photos of pets and their families, then creating one of a kind images for holiday cards or home displays.

Crystal also creates gift baskets for pets. These fun baskets are made for both cats and dogs, and offer special treats and toys based on the size of your pet. This is a great way to show your pet you care and give back to the community!

Profits from the special projects, gifts, and photos are put towards financial aid packages used at the clinic. Should a pet need a procedure the family is unable to afford, Adel Cedar Creek uses the funds to alleviate the financial burden.

Crystal and the Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic can't thank their pet parents enough for embracing the clinic as family. Cedar Creek hopes to call Adel home for years to come!

To find out more about holiday cards and gifts, please contact Crystal Sharp by phone at (515) 993-3410.

Adel Veterans Day 2010
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, later to be known as Veteran's Day. His remarks, made after the War to End All Wars, ring true today over 90 years later.

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

Please join the ADM 6-8th graders Thursday, November 11th as the ADM Alumni commemorate the lives of 8 brave graduates who gave their lives in the name of American freedom during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict.

The Killed in Action Memorial dedication ceremony will begin at 9:05am around the ADM High School flagpole with a flag raising presentation by the Adel American Legion, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, and performance of the National Anthem by the Middle School Chorus.

Killed in Action Memorial PlaqueAudience members will then move indoors to the school auditorium where members of the ADM Alumni Board will present the Killed in Action Memorial.

The Memorial consists of a 4 foot by 3 foot bronze and alumicolor plaque designed by Jim Peters and eight, 2 foot by 3 foot displays composed of photos, letters, and tributes representing each of the ADM graduates.

Brick Street Update
Downtown Adel Iowa

The summer of 2010 marked the culmination of over 20 years of discussion, planning, and research in regards to the Adel cityscape.

Throughout the course of the last 6 months construction crews have taken on the painstaking task of removing, cleaning, and recreating the historic brick streets that are Adel's trademark.

There have been interesting discoveries along the way, an unsupported room under the sidewalks, a long buried concrete container of unknown origins, and countless coal chutes dating back many decades.

The City of Adel has been complimented on their eagerness to share information with the community. City Administrator Chad A. Bird has done a great job of bridging the community with the engineers and crews responsible for this major undertaking through up-to-date announcements and bi-monthly informational meetings.

As the project progresses into November, additional public input meetings have been scheduled. Meetings are an opportunity for community members and businesses to voice any questions or concerns they may have regarding the street repair process.

The additional meetings have been scheduled for Tuesdays November 2nd and 16th. The meetings will begin at 6pm in Adel City Hall and everyone is encouraged to attend.

To commemorate this historic event, the City of Adel, in conjunction with the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce, has scheduled an Open House event tentatively for November 16th. Please mark your calendars and stay posted to DiscoverAdel.com as more details are announced!

To find up-to-date information about the historic Adel Brick Street project, please visit DiscoverAdel.com.

Grandma's Dinner Rolls

My girls were raised with one Thanksgiving a year. It never mattered which side someone came from, our family celebrated the holidays together.

We've had years with more than 20 people gathered around the table. It's always fun to have the whole family together but it can make for quite a few rounds of "Can you pass the rolls?"

My mother hand makes the rolls each holiday and they're a great tradition on their own, but as happens with a large extended family, tradition can grow into legend.

15 years ago we were celebrating Thanksgiving spread across rows of tables in the living room of my in-laws house.

The family talked across the table, having a few different conversations in a few different directions at once.

Halfway through dinner someone asked for the rolls that were at the opposite end of the table.

From across the 25 foot span my sister-in-law picked up a single roll and launched it, starting a much loved family tradition.

Now when we sit down for the holiday meal someone asks for a roll and the story is retold, sometimes reenacted, through fits of laughter.

Family legend is sketchy as to who caught the roll with a surprised grab, unaware that someone at the other end of the table had heard their request, but we all know who threw it!

My mother's rolls have been requested every year since, and once you make them, I'm sure you'll agree they are too good to wait for!

Ingredients:
2 c warm Water (95-115˚)

1 1/2 Tablespoon Dry Yeast

1 Egg, beaten lightly

1/2 c Vegetable Oil

1/2 c Sugar

1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt

6-7 c Flour

Yield: 2 Dozen Rolls

Directions:
Dissolve yeast in warm Water, will foam slightly.

Add Sugar, Oil, Egg, and Salt.

Stir in flour a few cups at a time.

Knead lightly and shape dough into a ball.

Place dough in greased bowl, cover with a towel.

Let dough rise 2 hours or until dough has doubled in bulk.

Punch down and shape into rolls.
Tip: Consider baking in muffin pans to make consistent rolls.

Let rise 1 hour.

Bake at 375˚ for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Enjoy!
Terry's Travels
Terry Traveller
Each month, Terry journeys through our community enjoying the sights, sounds, deals, and meals that make Adel great!

This month, Terry visited Adel Winterset TV and Appliance.

Since I started writing this column people have asked, "what is it about Adel businesses that you like so much?"

For me, it's all about charm, class, and service.

There is no better example of stellar service than Adel Winterset TV and Appliance.

Most of my appliances and electronics were purchased at Adel TV.

I shop there because the staff is friendly, helpful, and they know what they are talking about.

All I know is that I prefer "Avocado" over "Harvest Gold."

I don't know the model, I don't know the number of amps I need, and... I'm a big enough person to admit... with the new design concepts sometimes I can't tell the difference between a washer and an oven.

That's why I shop there, I don't need to know any of that.

I can trust the sales staff to ask me the questions I would never think to ask.

They help me pick out the right model for my needs, not the one with the highest markup like some big box stores.

Adel TV also stands behind their products.

If anything I buy should need service, they take care of it quickly.

When my furnace went out in the middle of a blizzard they got to me within a few hours, on the weekend, and had it fixed in no time!

After 50 years of service I know I'm not the only one that has positive feedback.

Friends of the family drive in from Des Moines to buy from Adel TV and Appliance.

I could go on and on telling you about the electronic showroom, the Geothermal Heating and Cooling systems, their Green initiative... but I won't spoil it for you.

What really makes Adel Winterset TV and Appliance a stand out business in the Adel community, can't be explained in 1000 words.

Great service has to be experienced to be truly appreciated!

- Terry
