"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 108 October 2017
Welcome to Adel in October!

When I was a kid, my Spiderman costume was a cheap one dimensional plastic mask and a plastic pull over apron that had a cheap imprint of Spidey's costume. It was a "store bought" costume and it somehow made us more super hero like, than a homemade suit.

Every kid in town had the same type of costume, usually pulled over their winter coats. We would trudge through rain, snow and sleet in packs, our red Converse tennies soaked and our toes frozen.  I only remember one Halloween warm enough that we left the coats at home.

Halloween was always on Halloween and even then our parents checked the bags for apples... and the would steal a Snickers bar. Back then there weren't any "fun" sized candy bars, they were always full sized treats and losing one was a big deal.

I only mention this because my grandson showed me his Spiderman costume  for this year. It's a long way from what I wore, in fact, it was so accurate that if he had shot "web" from him fingers I wouldn't have been surprised. This year Adel has three different nights in October to gather goodies.

Of course October is so much more than that one event, there are fall festivals, local news and more! This month we had the pleasure to speak with Derek and Megan Garrett of Heartland Handcrafted who have opened a new business in Adel.

Terry is back with a favorite Halloween story, which is ironic when every day is an orange parka filled adventure when you share an office with Terry.

We've got a busy month planned for you. Grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

Derek and Megan Garrett of Heartland Handcrafted

This month we spoke with husband and wife duo Derek and Megan Garrett of Heartland Handcrafted in Adel. Their new home-based business features customized decor, furniture, and repair services, serving clients throughout the midwest.

Derek and Megan are college sweethearts that met in Missouri. Three years ago, the couple married and decided to move to Iowa to be closer to family. Growing up in Stuart, Megan states Adel was known as a nice community to raise a family. She states, "I had my heart set on Adel right away."

Derek and Megan found their home in Adel and welcomed daughter Emmie soon after. Throughout their marriage, the need for household items had prompted Derek to build furniture, rather than run to the big box stores. "I would see something for $600 and think, I can do that better", said Derek.

Derek's construction background and previous work as a certified home inspector, made the tasks fun and exciting. By day, Derek worked at a sports retail outlet, in his free time, he created wood working solutions for his family, friends, and neighbors. It was a hobby, built out of necessity, that grew into a dream.

This spring, when the sporting goods company closed their stores nationwide, Derek was left with a decision.

"I had said, 'If I won the lottery, this is what I'd do.' When the store closed, Megan said, 'why do you have to win the lottery? Let's just do it!'"

Based out of their garage in Adel, Heartland Handcrafted offers custom carpentry services for projects big and small. Derek and Megan enjoy many design styles, especially the mix of traditional, farmhouse chic, and industrial elements.

From stylish decor and keepsakes, tables to cabinets, outdoor furniture and more, the team can build the perfect piece to fit your home and personality.

"Bring us your project or ideas and we'll work to create the perfect piece. Whether it's repairing an old family heirloom chair your dog broke, to building a completely custom, reclaimed barn wood kitchen island - no project is too big or too small.

Need a handyman to replace that broken kitchen cupboard or looking to completely transform your kitchen? We can do that too. All done by hand, by Derek and me."

The family works together to help others realize their vision. Derek works from a technical standpoint, explaining materials, costs, and suggesting possibilities. Megan has an artistic eye that helps the projects reach their final appeal. Even little Emmie can be found giggling as she sweeps up sawdust and plays nearby. It is this team effort and family oriented nature that makes Heartland Handcrafted unique.

One of the best selling items is a convertible table that easily transforms two benches into a sturdy picnic table. Easily customized, this is the perfect addition to backyard entertaining.

"We've been included in some surprise projects. We had a nice lady place an order for one of the conversion tables as a surprise birthday gift for her mom. She said, 'now if my mom calls or messages you to order one herself, play dumb.' Of course, not more than a few hours later and we had a call from the mom. It was so fun to be involved but hard to keep the secret. That's really why we do what we do. We love to see the looks on peoples faces when they see what we've created for them. And it's great knowing something our whole family worked to create is now in someone else's home.

Derek, Megan, and Emmie are proud to call Adel home, for their family and their growing business.

"Heartland Handcrafted really sums us up. A combination of a Missouri boy and an Iowa girl growing their family in the heart of Iowa. Two people who put their heart, soul and sweat into handcrafting perfect pieces for the home of others. We put our hearts into each item at Heartland Handcrafted so you can love your items with all your heart."

Cowboy Church UMC Adel Iowa
You're Invited to Cowboy Church at Adel UMC October 22nd

We are SET! Join the Adel United Methodist Church on October 22nd for a single worship hour, beginning at 10:00 am for Cowboy Church.

Pastor John hopes you will invite others to share in this special worship experience, followed by an outdoor BBQ.

Brick Street BBQ will once again have their delicious BBQ dishes for us to enjoy. No Sunday school on this day.

Cowboy churches are local Christian churches within the cowboy culture that are distinctively Western heritage in character.

A typical cowboy church may meet in a rural setting in a barn, metal building, arena, sale barn, or the back of a feed store; have its own rodeo arena, and a country gospel band. Baptisms are generally done in a stock tank.

There is almost always an opportunity to honor our Veterans and the sermons are usually short and simple. Prior to 1980 there were about 5 cowboy churches in Texas, now the number exceeds 200, and there are an estimated 750 nationwide. In Iowa, there are at least 5 but there may be more.

Strengthening Families Program
Strengthening Families Program November - December

Learn how to build healthy and thriving family relationships during those sometimes challenging teen years, by attending our Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP 10-14).

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Dallas County will be offering the seven-week SFP 10-14 for parents and their youth (ages 10-14) in both English and Spanish at St. Patrick Catholic School in Perry on Mondays, November 6 through December 18 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a free meal beginning at 5:30 p.m.

This program's goal is to help families build strong communication, problem-solving and stress-coping skills by working together. Understanding the changes in youth as they grow and develop into young adults is crucial to strengthening your family. "We were looking for ideas," said a past participant of Waukee. "We had three kids, but we didn't have the skills that we thought we should have. There's no manual for raising a 14-year-old and 10-year-old."

ISU Ext Strengthening Families
View Flyer
During the first hour, adults will discuss ways to create a more positive and supportive relationship with their children by learning how to be loving and nurturing while still enforcing limits.

Youth will have the opportunity to engage in topics such as how to deal with stress, set goals for their future, learn to appreciate their parents and handle negative peer pressure during this time.

Families will unite during the second hour, and interact through activities to solidify lessons, work toward building more stable relationships and have fun together. "Not only has it shown me ways to deal with the troubled times we as parents face raising our children, she (my daughter) also learned to handle the stresses of being a teenager and peer pressure," said a mother in a past session.

Thanks to local sponsorships, the Strengthening Families Program in Perry is being offered at no cost. Free childcare will also be provided for children under 10. Recipes From Home
 Recipe From Home
Oktemberfest Pie

I grew up with a lot of German food as a kid. Although the names of German food always sound odd, the actual dishes are excellent. One of favorites is Schweinshaxe*.

Pronounced SH-vines-HAKs-eh, this Oktoberfest treat is similar to our roasted turkey legs at the state fair.

These are slow roasted ham hocks with an irresistible crunchy skin. The recipe is super easy.

*Schweinshaxe:
Rub a ham hock with minced garlic, salt and pepper. Throw it in a baking dish with a sliced onion and 8oz can of your favorite beer ( I prefer a good stout, the darker the better). Let it bake at 325 degrees for 3-4 hours. Reserve the **Beer and Onion liquid for gravy, soups and more.

Trust me when I say, that's often as far as I get with this meal- who needs cabbage when you've got roast pork?

The few times we've had Schweinshaxe leftover, I've made Oktoberfest Pie. There are plenty of different recipes on the web for this one- some with homemade runza bread and hamburger, others with canned sauerkraut and keilbasa sausage. This month's recipe combines traditional cooking with a pre-made crust, although if you have the time and skill I recommend the home made crust, but both work well.

Oktemberfest Pie:
Ingredients:
1 small head of Cabbage, chopped
1-2 C. Swiss Cheese, shredded
2 tubes refrigerated crescent roll dough
Salt and Pepper
*Schweinshaxe
**Beer and Onion liquid (see *Schweinshaxe recipe above.)

Directions:
1. Cook chopped Cabbage in a large fry pan over low heat. Add 3 TBPS Beer and Onion liquid. Cover with lid. Stir Cabbage occasionally until cooked al dente (approximately 5-8 minutes).

2. Grease a 9x13 inch pan. Line the pan with 1 tube of the refrigerated crescent roll dough. Follow baking instructions on can until lightly golden. Let cool.
3. Mix Schweinshaxe meat with Cabbage in fry pan, along with 1/4 cup Beer and Onion liquid. Cover with lid until liquid reaches a low boil.

4. Fill 9x13 with Cabbage and Pork mixture. Layer Swiss Cheese, and top with 1 tube of refrigerated crescent roll dough.

5. Follow baking instructions on can until golden brown. Let cool.

Serves 12.

- Enjoy!

Terry Traveller Adel Oiwa
Terry's Favorite Halloween!
Have I ever told you, kind reader, about my favorite Halloween?

'Twas many years ago in a land far away, or rather close depending on where you stand in the heated debate: City V. Country.

Wherein Country complains that City "blocks" are a bold face lie, i.e "it's 5-10 blocks away" really means "it's an hour away, put on good shoes."

That hallowed eve my costume was that of a fan of Terry Traveler. I was rewarded for my wit by many a thumbs up sign and finger guns pointed my way upon entering the party.
The joint, 'twas ahop'in, the crowd, 'twas ajump'in. And then, standing on the furniture, were seven great musicians playing the oldest, scratchiest music I've ever heard. And mind you, I've been to Newfoundland.

They were dressed in vaudeville rags with metal washboards and ceramic jugs, warped violins, and a  stand up bass that looked to have been shattered and hastily glued back together. The sound was like a digeradoo but with strings.

Their faces were drawn, aged and withered, more haunting than any of these modern zombies the kids are all "woke" about.

The music was morose and seem to be filled with autumn air. I bought their record and play it on days like this. When fall has set in, the leaves are falling, the days grow short, and I feel like standing on the couch.

I became great friends with those revival singers and as we reach another Halloween, I wish you fair weather. This is Terry Traveler saying, it may not be true, but I bet most of it is.

Studio Q 360 - The Value of Time

My business partner recently gave me pause when he suggested the Studio Q 360 difference is time.

I was conducting a chair massage event when he said this, and he had volunteered to help me as receptionist and greeter.

For the first time he witnessed how I interact with clients, one after another for hours. After two long days we got a chance to talk, and he shared with me his insights.

"You spend time with every client. You asked questions. You listened. You didn't tell them what to do, you gave them options. You helped them find their own answers. How many doctors have they been to before who rushed them through their appointment? How many providers treated them like a burden? You treated each person with respect. You gave them your time."

The weekend ended and I returned home to my office in Adel. This week I realized he was right. Something I offer is a clinical experience- the opportunity to discuss your personal wellness with a licensed healthcare provider. I also understand where to find the answers that are right for you.

Each body is different, each person is an individual, and that means there are no cut and dry answers. I believe each client is capable of understanding their own healthcare, its just a matter of research and experimentation.

For example, low back pain is a common concern however, the cause of that back pain varies from person to person. Different muscles might be involved for the office employee than the body builder. Some people may find exercise helps, others may flat out refuse to exercise. Some may like ice to reduce pain, others may like heat. Each option leads to a different effect on the body. My job is to lay out the options and help people find the resources to make their own informed decision.

This takes time: time before the appointment to learn about medical history and current issues, multiple sessions to untangle the knots, time after each session to discuss new options that have presented themselves. I could charge people for this time, much like the national chains do, but that's not my motivation.

I'm proud to say my motivation is your well being.

Call today to experience the Studio Q 360 difference and learn how time changes everything.
