"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 107 September 2017
Welcome to fall in Adel! I don't usually bring up religion here, but September marks that sacred event of the Iowa vs. Iowa State game. Now, I was raised agnostic but have cheered for all three Iowa teams, let's not forget UNI and Kurt Warner.

All great events such as this have a gathering where the faithful who can't travel to Mecca celebrate in their homes or a local house of worship clad in the robes of their denomination.

One such event is the annual LSB Cookout, this year held at their new location. It's always a great time - I plan on being there and invite you come out and join the fun!

This month we had the pleasure to speak with Stuart Oxer of Blue Oak CPA in Adel.

We've got a busy month planned for you. Grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

In 1988, John Short started a small certified public accounting office in Adel. Over the next 28 years, John and his staff helped the community through tax season and much more. After so many years of dedicated service, John began looking towards retirement. Enter Stuart Oxer, CPA.

This month we spoke with Stuart Oxer, new owner of JM Short, CPA, now known as Blue Oak CPA in Adel.

Stuart Oxer grew up in North Carolina where he went to school to become an Actuary, and worked for his parents' manufacturing plant as a cost accountant. After several years, Stuart decided to move to Arizona to pursue his MBA and CPA credentials. It was there, in the early 90's, that Stuart met his wife Wendi, a pediatrician and Ames, Iowa native.

"We lived in Arizona for a couple years then moved to Georgia a little closer to my family. Our kids were 4 and 2. I did not know this when we got married, but my wife told me it's Iowa law: when you have kids ready for kindergarten you have to move back to Iowa. So we moved back here, lived in Urbandale, and then moved up to Ankeny because I was the CFO for a manufacturing plant in Story City. Last year, my wife said we could move south, so we decided to move to Clive. We really enjoy it here."

Stuart has worked with companies of all shapes and sizes throughout his career.

"I really like working for businesses. My accounting career started by working for a couple of Fortune 500 companies and then I switched to working with smaller companies."

"I've worked in the food industry, plastics, and metals. I owned, with some partners, a plastic injection molding plant in West Des Moines; I've been involved in an animal vaccine company, and a lot of other smaller companies. I also went into nonprofits for a little while, from a management side. Then I decided I wanted to get back into doing accounting. So I did some consulting work with the Meskwaki Tribe in Tama; helped with some of their audits, compliance work, and with some small companies they own."

Blue Oak CPA - Adel Iowa
"I started looking around for different places and John's business popped up on the radar. I really liked his business, it was a good situation for me.

Most importantly, it had a really great staff [Kathy Sinn, Payroll Manager and Denise Walter, Audit Manager] that have been with the company for more than 10 years. John's going to stay on for a few tax seasons, so we don't lose that institutional memory of stuff that happened years and years ago.

To continue our growth, we opened a satellite office in Urbandale. We also hired Kathy Casey as our Receptionist, Michael Kremske as our Staff Accountant, and Lori Dillard as our Sales & Marketing Manager."

Stuart Oxer and his team are proud to present Blue Oak CPA to the community as a symbol of stability and creativity. Since the sale in October 2016, Stuart has been well received in Adel; clients feel reassured that their business is in good hands. Stuart's favorite thing is to save people money- whether that's finding ways to reduce a family's tax bill or helping a business find ways to cut costs and return those savings to their family and the community.

Blue Oak CPA - Adel Iowa

"We've got a great staff here- they know what customers need from a tax and payroll side. It's not a big company that's inaccessible; we're right here on Main Street. If you've got questions, stop in. It's always better to ask the question. Every question is a good question because it's on your mind. Once you've made a purchase or sold something, it's often too late to worry about how it's going to affect your taxes. We have tons of people that call us and we're happy to answer our client's questions, usually in 24 hours or less."

Stuart believes strongly in supporting humanitarian causes, both in the office and his personal life. Blue Oak CPA is a member of the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce. Stuart is an active member of the Adel Rotary Club, Board Member of Prevent Blindness Iowa, and works with the Refugee program at Lutheran Services of Iowa.

"These are folks from war torn areas in Asia and Africa that have come to the US several ago, they've all been vetted, learn English in cities like Chicago and New York, and then they come to work and settle in Iowa. I help them out with small business needs and taxes. A lot have started farming for their local communities and to sell at different farmer's markets. Many are daycare owners who take care of children whose parents work second or third shift at factories in Des Moines. A lot of these folks have young kids and want to be home with them. This way they can have their own business, pay taxes, save money, and eventually have own houses."

"With the Adel Chamber, its important to get involved because that's how you can grow your business and help the community. It's important to support the local businesses, and as Adel grows, hopefully our existing businesses will expand, and new ones will join the community, and we will increase the number of local jobs. That way, the people don't have to commute to Des Moines and they will work and live in Adel and support the local community. To me, that would be the perfect situation where more and more places move out here and people drive less."

If you want to grow your business while minimizing taxes, make payroll or bookkeeping easier, or have need some tax help for you or a relative, Blue Oak CPA is here to help.

Learn how to build healthy and thriving family relationships during those sometimes challenging teen years, by attending our Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP 10-14).

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Dallas County will be offering the seven week SFP 10-14 for parents and their youth (ages 10-14) at Waukee Elementary School on Sundays, October 1 through November 12 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. with a free meal beginning at 5 p.m.

This program's goal is to help families build strong communication, problem-solving and stress-coping skills by working together. Understanding the changes in youth as they grow and develop in to young adults is crucial to strengthening your family.

"We were looking for ideas," said a past participant of Waukee. "We had three kids, but we didn't have the skills that we thought we should have. There's no manual for raising a 14-year-old and 10-year-old."

During the first hour, adults will discuss ways to create a more positive and supportive relationship with their children by learning how to be loving and nurturing while still enforcing limits. Youth will have the opportunity to engage in topics such as how to deal with stress, set goals for their future, learn to appreciate their parents and handle negative peer pressure during this time. Families will unite during the second hour, and interact through activities to solidify lessons, work toward building more stable relationships and have fun together.

"Not only has it shown me ways to deal with the troubled times we as parents face raising our children, she (my daughter) also learned to handle the stresses of being a teenager and peer pressure" said a mother in a past session.  View the 2017 Fall Flyer.

Cost to register for the Strengthening Families Program in Waukee is $19 and can be completed through Waukee Community Education or (515) 987-2761.

Free childcare will be provided for children under 10. Note: Spanish classes will be offered if there is enough interest. For questions or additional information contact Lisa Mickelson at (515) 993-4281 or lmickel@iastate.edu

The Dallas County Library Association will once again present a county-wide READ program with a twist this year.

Two county-wide READ programs are planned - one will be a fiction book in September followed by a nonfiction book in October.

Donald Harstad's November Rain is the fiction selection. Mr. Harstad is an Iowa author and former police officer specializing in crime fiction and police procedurals. He had a 26-year career with the Sheriff's Department of Clayton County, Iowa, retiring as a Deputy Sheriff.

His first novel, Eleven Days, was based on a case he worked on during that time. Mr. Harstad will be presenting an Author/Book Talk at the Granger Community Building on September 18, 2016 at 6:30 pm following by a book signing. His books will be available for sale at the event by Beaverdale Books.

Dan Gable's A Wrestling Life 2 is the nonfiction selection. Mr. Gable is a retired American Olympic wrestler and head coach.

He is best known for his tenure as head coach at the University of Iowa where he won 15 NCAA team titles between 1976 and 1997.

He is also famous for having only lost one match (182-1) in his entire Iowa State University collegiate career - his last - and winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, while not giving up a single point.

Tickets are on sale at each of the 12 Dallas County Libraries for the Author Meet and Greet at the Hotel Pattee on October 19, 2017, 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm.

The Meet and Greet will be an opportunity to enjoy hors d'ouerves and meet Mr. Gable. The ticketed event will be followed by a free Author/Book Talk at the Perry Performing Art Center at 7 pm followed by book signing. His books will be available for sale at the event by Beaverdale Books.

Italian Fish & Rice

As you've probably noticed from these stories, I'm kinda proud of our daughters. Each one is strong and independent. They face challenges head on with a smile, just like their mother.

When I write these stories, I still picture them as my three little girls who like to fish in puddles and blow bubbles on the back steps. Now they have kids of their own, and we're blessed to share a weekly meal with them.

We all take turns cooking and trying new dishes. The following recipe is one that our oldest brought back from Italy. It's a fan favorite and I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well.

Italian Fish & Rice:
Ingredients:
1 lbs. Tilapia fillets, Frozen
1 C. Kale, chopped
1 Onion, diced
6-8 Sweet Peppers, diced
2 T. Garlic, minced
1 T. Olive Oil
Tomato Paste, small can
Seasonings, 3 tsp each:
Basil
Oregano
Crushed Red Pepper
Paprika
2 C. Brown Rice

Directions:

1. Prepare Brown Rice according to package instructions. Set aside.

2. Heat Olive Oil and Garlic in large saucepan.
Add Seasonings to Oil, stir to combine cook until aromatic, 1-3 minutes.
3. Add Tomato Paste to pan and cook for an additional 1-5 minutes, or until Tomato Paste appears roasted, but not burnt.

4. Combine 1/2 C Water, Onions, and Sweet Peppers with Tomato Paste until smooth.

5. Reduce to Low Heat, cover with lid, and let simmer 8 minutes.

6. Add Tilapia fillets and Kale, stir to coat.
Cover with lid and let simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

7. Remove lid, break apart any large chunks of fish, and let reduce for 5-10 minutes, or until the consistency of traditional pasta sauce.

8. Stir in cooked Brown Rice.
Yield: 4 lbs.

- Enjoy!
