Dear Friend of Adel,
In the years we've lived here we've met a number great neighbors, one of those is Mike Reams. Mike runs Arnold Motor Supply in Adel. We got a chance to talk with him this month.
September is still summer to me, just with the kids in school. Taking advantage of the great weather is Dawn Hinton of Active Girl Fitness and her Boot Camp at Evans Park this month.
We've got a very busy month in Adel, the Around town events section is one of our largest yet, and if you look on the calendar at DiscoverAdel.com you'll find more.
Plus an update from the River Valley Golf Course, Fall Prevention Week, NAPA's One Sale, activities at the Adel Public Library, and much more!
Have a great September. We look forward to seeing you in Adel this month! Enjoy!

Mike Reams - Adel Arnold Motor Supply
| This month we spoke with Mike Reams, manager of Adel Arnold Motor Supply, a growing Iowa- based company that stands on the foundation that, "you build a business with people, not with buildings of bricks and stone." - E.P. Arnold, Founder
 | | Mike Reams | Started in northwest Iowa in 1927 with a $500 investment and parts sold out the back of a truck, Arnold Motor Supply has been leading the way in small town automotive service for 85 years.
6 corporate divisions, 2 parts distribution centers serving 5 states, and 51 company stores operate daily using Mr. Arnold's original business model, dedicated to the people that make the company strong.
Today, shop managers and top sales representatives can join the partnership for the same minimal investment.
The reasons a business like Arnold Motor Supply does so well in rural Iowa towns are simple: great service, knowledgeable staff, competitive prices, and a strong foundation in community.
With more than 50 years of combined experience, the Adel team is well versed in traditional and state of the art automotive care for at-home and professional mechanics.
Mike states, "Our service is second to no one. We treat people how we want to be treated. If there's a part you need that we don't have, you name it, we will get it for you."
It's that lost art of small town chivalry that makes Mike's store special.
Without a second thought the team has helped stranded motorists and found hard-to-find parts just in the nick of time. Retelling stories of gallantry, Mike shrugs with a smile. To him, it's all part of a day's work and the right thing to do. To his customers, it's going above and beyond the call of duty.
This same drive motivates Mike to sponsor 3 race cars, 1 drag car, Adel driver Dylan Book's modified car, and Chris Horton's Knoxville Raceway 305 Class sprint car.
The store also gives to Military Veterans, drawing passion from the Vietnam era and Mike's firsthand encounter witnessing soldiers leave for and return from Iraq.
As a proud husband and father, Mike knows how important it is to treat women with respect. Long gone are the days of assuming women know less than men when it comes to cars. In fact, Arnold Motor Supply's company research shows women are taking the driver's seat with regards to automotive care!
The Internet at their fingertips, these savvy shoppers research and diagnosis car troubles before making the final decision where to buy the right part for the best deal.
Mike and his team embrace this new world with open arms. "Women aren't dummies. We don't talk down to them or belittle them. There's none of that 'maybe you should get your dad' talk around here."
Working as a mechanic since the age of 18, Mike has always been a car guy.
When he isn't helping his customers he enjoys working on his 1975 GMC Sierra and spending time with his family: wife Janella, sons Adam, Ryan, Alex, and daughters Katie and Lindy, and their grandchildren.
 | Mike Reams and his 1975 GMC Sierra
| Mike's charm and good-natured attitude comes from his small town roots that reach across the state. He has wound his way from his hometown in Evansdale to Boone to Adel pursuing a great location to raise his family.
It was friendly Adel citizens that first drew him here - friends that wanted the family to be closer, and to enjoying everything the town had to offer.
The fact that Adel has stayed a small town with all the nearby growth keeps Mike and his family here.
"Des Moines is close enough to appreciate where I am at. I like that everybody knows what's going on. People here are involved; you don't have to go very far to hear the latest news. It's more about what Adel isn't - no rush hour traffic or big city worries. It's a little more relaxed around here. Adel is just a good town."
E.P. Arnold would be proud of Mike Reams, his team, and the Adel location for representing the tenets of customer service and community outreach that are the foundation of one of Iowa's homegrown (and still growing!) success stories.

HomeCare Services, Inc.-Fall Prevention Week
| HomeCare Services, Inc. Announces Fall Prevention Week
September 22, 2012 is Falls Prevention Day, which is the start of Falls Prevention Week. This is a good time to assess your home, office and other areas for cords, lose rugs and other items that may cause a fall.
Proper shoes, as well as awareness of how one walks, shuffling, etc. due to limited mobility or pain, can also be factors in reducing or preventing falls.
During Fall Prevention Week HomeCareServices, Inc. of Dallas County will be distributing information to their clients; including those who use HomeCare's homemaker services, personal care services, meals on wheels program, those at congregate meal sites and those who ride HomeCare's HIRTA buses.
This is being done in an effort to prevent injuries that may lead to broken hips and other bones, or more serious health problems.
Exercise that keeps muscles strong also helps fall prevention through better balance.
For more information, call Connie Doran, Executive Director at HomeCare Services, Inc. at 515-993-4531.

River Valley Golf Course - September Events
|
Hello Adel, this change in weather has been a great relief the past couple weeks. The course is making a strong comeback from the scorching heat earlier this Summer.
The fairways are filling back in nicely and the greens are very receptive. We still have quite a few great events to get signed up for as the golf season winds down.
Please feel free to check out our website for details on the many fundraiser tournaments and it is never too early to start thinking about our Chilli Opens.
We have the formats chosen for this year except the third week. Again this year, we have decided to let our golfers choose the third format. Like us on Facebook and cast your vote on which format you would like to play.
The weather change has been great, but with these cooler temps comes the need for some extra help around the Clubhouse.
If anyone is interested in joining the River Valley family, please stop in to speak with us to see what we can work out.
We currently need some range/cart help or ask to speak with Roxanne about helping out inside with the food/beverage.
New this Fall, we are starting a Men's Fall League. Starting Sept. 4th, we will be having a 2-man Ryder Cup Style league.
There are currently spots available but we need to have signups before the first night. Please feel free to call us for more details and to sign up your team today!
Also, we hope that you keep us in mind for your party or event needs.
Our clubhouse is a great place for holiday parties and other events.
We enjoy working with everyone to make sure they have a fun event that meets their expectations.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone out on the tee soon!
Thanks,
Curt

Recipe of the Month
| | Mega Meatball Subs
You know life is good when your house is full of family on a Sunday. , During the Fall, the kids and grandkids come over and "us guys" stake out the TV for the game.
My son-in-law is positioned two feet from the screen.
My grand sons sit on either side of me in my chair as my grand daughter sits on the arm of the chair with an arm around my neck.
Lori and the girls are in the other room talking and making sure we keep the noise down.
All we need to round out a great day is the smell of sausage grinders baking in the oven and the promise of lunch at half-time.
This is a sub I've been perfecting over the years, always with rave reviews.
We hope you enjoy the latest version, it's best with a house full!
Mega Meatball Subs
Ingredients
2 Loaves French Bread, cut length wise
1 lbs. ground Graziano Italian Sausage
1 lbs. Hamburger or Ground Chuck
Garlic Seasoning
Italian Seasoning Mix
Red Pepper Flakes
1 T. Olive Oil
Salt
2 Cans Crushed Tomatoes
1/2 tsp. sugar
1 Onion, finely diced
1 each Green Pepper, Yellow Pepper, and Onion Julienned
3 Mushrooms, sliced
3 C. Mozzarella Cheese
1/2 C. Parmesan Cheese
Directions
1. In large mixing bowl combine meats, 2 tablespoons each garlic and Italian Seasoning, and 1/8 teaspoon salt.
Mixing with your hands is best.
Form into 1 inch meatballs and place on foil wrapped cookie sheet.
Bake at 425 for 15-20 minutes, depending on thickness of meatballs.
Remove from stove and reduce heat to 375.
2. In large pan heat olive oil and diced onion over medium heat until translucent.
Add crushed tomatoes, 2 tablespoons each garlic and Italian Seasoning, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon sugar.
Reduce heat to prevent splattering. Simmer on low for at least 20 minutes.
3. Combine cheese and a few dashed of crushed red pepper flakes.
4. Place bread on 2 foiled cookie sheets. Layer sauce, meatballs, onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cheese mixture.
Don't overdo the sauce!
5. Bake open face sandwiches for 8-10 minutes, or until cheese is melted.
Once removed from the oven, allow to cool for 5 minutes.
Slice diagonally every 3-4 inches and serve.
Enjoy! |
