Karina Ward - Chamber Director

This month we spoke with Karina Ward, the new Chamber Director for the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce.

Originally from Milwaukee, Karina was drawn to Iowa to further her education. After receiving her Masters Degree in Community and Regional Planning from Iowa State University, she began her professional journey working with Region 12 Council of Governments in Carroll.

The Region 12 agency was originally chartered to assist local communities with grant writing and planning needs, and has grown to offer technical assistance and community development of all types such as public transit, workforce development, and collaborative marketing efforts.

It was this assistance that the City of Adel sought when joining the agency to pursue an Iowa Economic Development Authority grant for downtown businesses.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for Downtown Revitalization is a matched funding program made available to communities across the state to repair external building facades to their original splendor.

As the grant is directly associated with the National Register of Historic Places, city officials and business owners work with an architect to design historically appropriate improvements such as new windows, awnings, doors, and brick repair.

The designs are then sent for approval to the Iowa Historical Preservation office. Improvements of this type help bolster tourism, encourage new business development, and increase community appeal overall.

Karina was assigned as Adel's Project Manager with Region 12 and began to dig into city history to better explain why Adel was an appropriate candidate for the funding.

Grant writing takes a special knack - one must truly understand the nature of the project to provide a clear explanation as to how it will benefit the community while also working with city officials and architects to gather historical data to support those claims and justify expenses.

During her 3 years with Region 12 covering a 6 county/ 60 community area, Karina wrote approximately 3 million dollars in successful grants- a testament to her ability to see the potential each city has, given the opportunity. Thanks to Karina's hard work Adel has been awarded $500,000 for the downtown façade project!

During her research, Karina worked closely with city officials and representatives who let her know of the open Chamber position and encouraged her to apply. The board recognized her skills and in March of 2013, announced Karina as the new Director of the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce.

With her new position, Karina hopes to encourage Chamber members and non-members alike to share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. The first step has been to open a clear channel of communication.

As she settles into her new position, Karina has been meeting with local businesses to foster open discussions and will continue to introduce herself around town as the Annual Meeting and Membership Drive nears.

"I hope that members will provide feedback- what they would like to see. Whenever staff changes its an opportunity to see what we would like to be doing. I'm looking forward to that- to hear feedback and have larger input from all of our members as to what they want us to focus on."

If you would like to talk about your dreams and visions for Adel's future, one of the best opportunities is the Adel After Hours. Held monthly, these social gatherings are a great place to meet new people and converse about Adel's recent developments. Karina is also available by phone or feel free to stop by the Chamber office between 8:30 am- 4:30pm.

Everyone is also encouraged to follow the Adel Chamber on Facebook, where Karina makes announcements regarding events and activities around town. Chamber members are asked to email Karina with any news you would like publicized to fellow members as part of the Chambers email blasts.

This month Karina will enjoy her first Adel Sweet Corn Festival on August 10th. With the changing of the guard, its important to note that the festival will be much the same as it has been in previous years. Karina jokes, "Don't worry- we'll still have 7 tons of free sweet corn!"

Adel is excited for the wealth of knowledge and endless possibilities Karina's specialized skills bring to the community. $500,000 is just the beginning!

Adel Sweet Corn Festival - August 9th & 10th
Adel Sweet Corn Festival - Adel Iowa For 34 years Adel, Iowa has been welcoming visitors from around the world to the Adel Sweet Corn Festival to celebrate all that makes Iowa special - good people, summer fun, and the best sweet corn available.

The weekend is a fan favorite - with multiple events taking place across town.

On Friday, ADM Alumni are invited to celebrate the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction ceremony during the All Class Reunion at the high school starting at 4 p.m.

One of the oldest traditions kickstarts the festival with massive amounts of corn shucking. Volunteers will gather near Raccoon Valley State Bank at 5:30 p.m. to fill a refrigerated semi-truck with baskets of ready-to-be-cooked corn on the cob. Everyone is welcome to join the fun..

On Saturday more than 10,000 people will enjoy 7.5 tons of free sweet corn while they take in the sights, smells, and joys of a small-town Iowa summer festival in full swing.

2013 Adel Sweet Corn 5K - Adel Iowa The day begins with the Adel Sweet Corn Festival 5K race at 8 a.m. (Make sure to watch for the best corn-related costume on a race participant!) Proceeds from the race will benefit the ADM Scholarship Foundation.

At 9:30 the parade begins with floats decorated by businesses and organizations from around town.

Bring your folding chairs, blankets, and sunscreen- ours is one of Iowa's largest parades, winding through town, and typically lasting until 11 a.m.

Around 10 a.m. people will begin to line up for the famously free Deardorff Peaches & Cream sweet corn, scheduled to start after the parade. Don't worry - bushels of volunteers help keep the line moving quickly and ensure everyone gets as much corn as they can enjoy. Besides, the corn line is a great place to say hello to friends and neighbors.

The downtown square and surrounding area will be alive with vendors selling food, jewelry, arts & crafts, antiques, and more. Kids can enjoy fun crafts, rides, and inflatables. Stop by tents to learn about candidates for upcoming elections, shops and services available in the Adel area, and nonprofit groups. All day and night visitors can see performances by local bands and dance teams at the new Community Stage and Pavilion.

Around 4 p.m. there is a changing of the guard as volunteers set up for the street dance and beer garden. This hometown tradition features live music, food vendors, cold suds, and the satisfied smiles of cornfed Iowans enjoying the excitement of another successful Adel Sweet Corn Festival.

Homecare Services Of Dallas County Extends Thanks And Begins Mid Year Appeal

HomeCare Services of Dallas County - Adel Iowa HomeCare Services of Dallas County wishes to thank all who attended their Adel Partners Chamber After Hours event on Tuesday, July 30 and for the interest expressed in their services and questions about their financial well-being.

They also thank those who helped with an appeal several months ago and those who send donations when they can.

HomeCare's services are open to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. In most cases those who are served by HomeCare find that they are not able to pay for the services or are only able to pay very little.

Therefore, HomeCare's financial resources are spread thin. Lately, due to lack of government funding, HomeCare is finding themselves in a precarious position of not being able to meet financial obligations as they would like. Regardless, they continue to help the elderly, poor and disabled, in addition to being there for all others. Many times those they help with homemaking/personal care, door to door HIRTA transportation, meals on wheels, a week's worth of frozen meals, or congregate meals, pay nothing or pay as little as 50 cents.

In order to offset the costs of providing the services, which includes food and fuel costs to prepare and deliver meals; fuel, repairs, inspections, oil changes, insurance, etc. to run the buses; labor and transportation costs to care for those in their homes and many other expenses, several entities, including Dallas County, provide various grants, of which we are grateful. However, as costs have gone up, funding from these sources has either remained stagnant or decreased (in some cases, dramatically).

HomeCare Services is asking the citizens of Dallas County to help keep HomeCare's services alive and serving others. HomeCare serves nearly 32,000 meals per year and the number is growing; provides over 39,000 trips per year; and helps people remain in their homes through home services with approximately 5,800 hours of service per year.

HomeCare has taken severe cost-cutting steps. One of those was to, five years ago, consolidate costs of being housed in several places and locating downtown in a building that is close for those coming to the agency, creating a senior center and making it easier for people to get to other shops downtown, or visit County/City buildings to take care of their personal business while they are at HomeCare. HomeCare is also doing business with much fewer staff, most of whom are part time and with no raises for several years.

HomeCare, however, is on a mission to help others in need and are hopeful that the residents of Dallas County and others pitch in to help an agency that, above all else, exists to help others!

BTown & Country Barbershop Returns to Adel
Town and Country Barbershop - Adel Iowa My great uncle was a barber. During the 60's, yes, I'm that old, My grandfather and my dad would take turns each week taking me to get a haircut from my Uncle Andrew. To quote my dad, "a man gets his hair cut weekly because it's good for the soul".

Then the Beatles changed everything, but some habits die hard. When we moved to Adel 25 years ago, one of my first trips downtown was to get a cut at the Town & Country Barbershop. It was the classic unpretentious barber shop of my youth.

Times change and the first of this year the shop closed. History has shown that once a  Barber shop  closes, the chances of it ever returning are minuscule. There are about 3,000 licensed barbers in Iowa, but the number still practicing is much lower.

This week Adel beat the odds as not one, but two Barbers are once again cutting hair in Adel.

Town and Country Barbershop - Adel iowa
Lenard Warford and Owner Jenny Orr of Town & Country Barbershop

The Town & Country Barbershop at 903 Main Street was reopened on Monday by Jenny Orr, and a familiar face, Leonard Warford returned as well.

Jenny has barbered for 21 years, she attended the Iowa Barber College as did Leonard.

She grew up in Norwalk and has has several barber shops over the years in different locations and communities, the last "in the city" as she puts it. She was ready to move to a small town when one of her clients mentioned that the shop in Adel was closing. Seeing this as a great opportunity, she moved to Adel and purchased the shop. When asked her thoughts on Adel she replied, " the people here are very friendly and it's been a good move. I really like this town and I can't wait for my first Sweet Corn Festival next week!"

For the last 12 years, a staple of the Adel barber shop has been Leonard Warford, he was born and raised in Adel. Leonard graduated barber college in 1966. "It may not have been the best time to graduate what with the Beatles and all" he remarked with a grin. "It was always a part-time job, but one I enjoy." Leonard worked full-time at the Des Moines Airport on the crash rescue squad. He retired from the airport in 2004 and has been cutting hair in Adel a couple of days a week ever since. Now that the shop has reopened, he'll be back at his post Tuesday's and Wednesday's 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fresh Corn on the Cob

Thanks to social media, I was just made aware that Christmas is only 5 months away.

As I look outside at the beautiful weather, its hard to imagine snow drifts just around the corner. But it does remind me of that special Iowan winter treat- frozen sweet corn.

My mother and grandmother would carefully pick, prepare, and store frozen and canned goods to enjoy all year long.

I remember sitting in our kitchen-turned-assembly line as we would shuck, clean, and cook bushels of corn as effortlessly as Green Giant.

Much of it was canned. The windows would drip moisture as we fought over who's turn it was to sit in front of the fan.

Towards the end of this two day experience we would bag the last of it.

The bags would then be thrown in the deep freezer to be forgotten until the first nips of winter would call out for warm bowls of hearty soups and stews.

From the depths of the freezer would emerge bright yellow memories of warm summer days spent playing in the field.

So in honor of the 34th Annual Sweetcorn Festival, and another reminder that the year is headed towards a close, we offer these tradition steps to freezing corn on the cob.

Fresh Corn on the Cob

Equipment:
1 Large pot of boiling water
1-2 bags of Ice
Vacuum food sealer or seal top freezer bags
2 large bowls
1 sharp knife
1 Large spoon
1 Permanent marker
Tongs

Directions:
1.
Husk the corn- a vegetable brush is best to remove the silk.

2. Fill 3/4 large pot and heat until boiling.

3. Fill 1 large bowl with ice and cold water.

4. Place 6 ears of corn into pot using tongs. Smaller batches are preferred- do not over stuff the pot.

5. Cover and allow batch to cook for 4-6 minutes for 6 ears of corn.

6. Remove corn with tongs and place in bowl of ice water for 4-6 minutes.

7. Drain the corn completely to reduce water log and freezer burn.

8. Repeat steps 4-7 for each batch. You do not need new water for each batch, but may need to add more and let it return to a rolling boil as you go.

9. Cut kernels from the cob. A great trick is to use an angel food or Bundt cake pan. Place the corn into the hole and as you cut the kernels will fall into the pan.

Note. My mother would hold back 3 or 4 dozen of the best ears to freeze whole for the "darkest days of winter." Same steps as listed here, just no knife required.

10. Bag servings of corn into the freezer bags or vacuum food sealer according to manufacturer's instructions.

Be sure to remove as much air as possible. Some people slide a straw into the bag to suck any additional air out.

11.
Label the bag with the date. If properly sealed, the corn can last up to 12 months in a deep freezer. Like they ever last that long!

When ready to enjoy, simply heat in the microwave or add to your favorite soup, stew, or chowder!

Enjoy!
