Vol. 21 July 2010
Dear Friend,

Welcome to July! The construction is underway on the brick street project. We've been taking photos of the construction and talking to the businesses downtown. They all want you to keep in mind that Adel's downtown district is still open and ready for your business!

This month we have great information on the ADM Alumni Association's new web site, the Dallas County Fair, an upcoming local charity event, an update on the Brick Street Repair Project, more of Terry's Travels, a recipe from home, and lots of great information from around town.

Hope to see you downtown in Adel this summer!

Enjoy!

Chris

FeatureAdel DeSoto Minburn Alumni Association

ADM Alumni BannerKris ManningThe Adel DeSoto Minburn school system has been nurturing students for decades.

ADM Alumni are proud of the life skills and knowledge they've acquired to help reach their full potential.

This month, we spoke with Kristie Peterson Manning, President of the ADM Alumni Association.

Q. Tell us about yourself.
A. I graduated from Adel High School in 1969. I was a DeSoto migrant before we were totally combined. I joined the Adel group my freshman year. I loved coming to Adel from DeSoto (with a class of 11).

I've lived in Adel most of my adult life; I am married to Al Manning and we have 2 daughters and 3 wonderful grandchildren. Our daughters also graduated from ADM.

Q. How did you become involved with the Association?
A. From day one, I've had a great desire to stay in touch with classmates from all the classes around me. A group of us got together one year to have an 11 class reunion. Founding president Becky Peters McChurch brought us the dream of becoming an association.

Q. Why was the Association started?
A. Our purpose is to keep alumni informed, aid in the preservation of school district archives, advocate special projects, support and promote alumni events, and to promote a sense of community.

ADM Alumni BoardQ. Who is on the Board?
A. Jim Peters - Treasurer, Kris Manning - President, Nicole Nielsen, Barb Trier, Melody Marshall, Ron Gilliland, Lynn Loynachan, Dick Wicks - Vice President, Nate Hawkins, Tana Belgarde, Barb Wicks - Secretary, Dave Moyer, and Kristi Fuller.

Q. What projects/ events happen throughout the year?
A. It seems like every year brings a new interest.  We've looked into preserving the old primary building (cost prohibitive) and capturing all of the old composites from destruction.

We're creating a display at the new school commons which houses all of the graduating class pictures then creating a book for people to have. We are gathering yearbooks from all years and having those scanned.

We are now looking into honoring graduates of Adel, DeSoto and Minburn who were veterans killed in action.

Q. How have the class reunions changed?
A. At one time there were individual class reunions for each class. We now hold All-Class Reunions so that Alumni of all ages can celebrate together.

There are also more people attending. With our ability to provide class liaisons with a class list and our updated address database, plus our publications, the interest and involvement has grown exponentially.

Q. Do you have any events coming up?
A. Absolutely! Friday, August 13th is our great day of gatherings.

We start the morning at 9am with the ADM Alumni Golf Outing at the River Valley Golf Course in Adel.
ADMA Golf
At 4pm we will have the All-Class ADM Alumni Reunion at the 7-8 School Commons with dinner being served by the ADM After Prom Committee.

We finish the day at 7PM with more members inducted into the ADM Athletic Hall of Fame in the auditorium.

Q. Tell us about your new website.
A. This has been long on the desire list. We needed an opportunity to have local expertise get us launched so we could manage the website ourselves.

We worked with local Adel business, G.Rafics Inc., and it has been a wonderful experience for us.  We want lots of alumni and school associates to visit the website and see what is happening!

Q. How can I become a member?
A. Sign up at the new website, www.admalumni.com. You can join for a mere $10 - $15 if you are an Alumni couple.  We will also accept any donations. Membership fees are applied to the annual projects mentioned above and 2 times a year we have a newsletter mailing.

Q. What's the most important reason to join the ADM Alumni Association?
A. You are investing in the legacy!  We use the funds to capture history for a group of Alumni who have come to appreciate the fact that they were privileged to attend a great school, with great teachers, and great education for our future.

Backpacks for Students
Back Pack 4 All - Adel Iowa

Backpacks for Students is in need of your help!

Brenda McGinnis
is one of the co-Childrens Ministry leaders at Celebration Family Church in Adel. We spoke with her this month to find out more about the charity.

Each year the church has raised funds to supply students, regardless of financial status, with free backpacks, school supplies, eye exams, dental screenings and haircuts in preparation for the school year. This year, the Dallas County Nurses are coming to give tetanus boosters.

The event this year will be on August 1st from 2-6pm at the ADM High School. Organizers will be giving away 500 backpacks filled with school supplies, supplies limited!

This year the fundraisers created a new Nonprofit organization called Backpacks for Students. This allows for corporate donations; some employers match the charitable donations of their employees.

Event organizers are welcoming other churches in the communities to be involved both financially and as volunteers, making this a community wide drive to help families in preparing to send their children back to school.

Backpacks for Students is still in need of hairstylists. If you are interested in providing free hair cuts, please contact the Celebration Family Church.

Organizers are asking local businesses and community members to to get involved and help this great cause. The charity is still in need of additional supplies and backpacks. Donations can be made to Backpacks for Students and sent to the church.

Terry's Travels - Adel Parks
Terry's Travels in Adel Iowa
Each month, Terry journeys through our community enjoying the sights, sounds, deals, and meals that make Adel great! This month, Terry enjoyed the great outdoors with the help of the Adel parks.

I love Iowa summers. Each year I dust off my picnic basket, grab my trusty plaid blanket, and head out in search of the perfect shade tree.

Adel is home to nice parks. I started the season at Island Park for a little fishing. I'm not very good at it but I'm very good at relaxing. I checked out the historic bridge that spans over the dam, it's a view worth seeing!

I also spent an evening at the Kinnick-Feller Park and Adel Municipal Pool. The park is a fun place to plan a get together with a few gazebos and lots of equipment for the kids. There is a waterway entry point for the brave interested canoeing or kayaking. Personally, I prefer the chlorinated waters of the pool, it's a great way to spend a summer night in Adel.

Once the rain stopped I got to enjoy an afternoon with family and friends at Evans Park. The kids got to play on the new slides and swings while the adults relaxed in the sun. We finished the day with a game of volleyball. Next time I'll bring my Frisbee golf discs!

So grab your sunscreen, head outside, and enjoy another Iowa summer!

Fourth of July
flagFlag Day Adel IA
The Fourth is a sacred and honored occasion in my family. It's more than flying the flag, eating hot dogs and enjoying the fireworks. It's a time to remember why we have this holiday.

My Grandfather served in WWI in France. He was in a trench the last minute of the war when it ended. The buddy he had gone through boot with, been shot with, Mustard gassed with, and served with, died next to him in those last few seconds of the war.

My Uncles served in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.

My Dad answered the call as did many of my cousins.

They never glorified it, but always answered "It's just what was right to do".

I have friends and classmates who served in both Gulf wars. One of them losing his nephew while they were both in Iraq.

None of them see themselves as heroes, they'll tell you that "the heroes didn't come home. They're just folks who answered the call of their country".

I still call them heroes. I'm sure you do also.

Please take a moment to thank God on this Fourth and every other day, for those brave troops who help ensure our freedom by serving.

------------------------------

The Adel Lions will place a flag on your property for these holidays:

Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veteran's Day
.

It's never too late to sign up to have them put one or more up on your lawn.

The cost for this great service is just $20 per year.
