"Helping the World Discover Adel"

Vol. 68 June 2014
Dear Friend of Adel,

One of the grand kids decided to help his folks paint, he's almost three. At that age they move like Ninjas and are "helping" before you realize it. He was covered in paint in seconds.

I was reminded of when the girls were 6, 7, and 9. We were making them each a tool box from my Grandfather's pattern. It was going well and I went upstairs to refill my coffee. I came back in to see one stirring a can of paint with a screwdriver. Another one nailing a screw and one had drowned a paint brush up to the handle.

After a clean up and speech on the proper care and maintenance of tools, I set them on the steps with orders to not move. I walked up the steps to wash the brush. At the top of the stairs Lori meets me with a grin. She had heard the whole thing. " I bet your dad is in heaven laughing about this!"

Suddenly memories of the same speech came back to me as I saw my dad shaking his head and telling me to not touch his stuff if I wasn't going to treat it right. The image of him sitting on a bleacher in heaven watching the events as they unfold and then elbowing the saint next to him and saying "You're right Pete, best seats in the house."  made me laugh.

Lord knows the things I did to his stuff. His patience was legendary. I threw the brush away and went down the steps laughing and gave them hugs.

Now it's my turn to smile as I hear about the grand kids. I imagine my Dad is laughing too. So, to all Dad's this June, have a Happy Father's Day and Thank you!

This month we had the pleasure of talking with Nancy Beechum, CPA, PLC about her new business in Adel. Nancy and her husband are also pioneers in a new Iowa crop.
----
Terry returns again this month, with another "interesting" view of events. I've really got to talk Terry into decaf.
----
So grab a cup of coffee, there is a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

This month we spoke with Certified Public Accountant Nancy Beechum about her new business in Adel, located on Highway 6.

For the past 25 years Nancy Beechum has been a certified public accountant, or CPA. After high school, Nancy was drawn to accounting as a field that would allow her to own and operate her own business.

Fate would lead her down different paths to expand her experience to cover everything from personal accounting to small business accounting for restaurants, retail, health care, and non-profit groups.

Nancy was a partner working in a small tax firm in Urbandale before she took a side-trip working at Midland International Tileworks in Redfield. Nancy then returned to public accounting before moving into non-profit finance to become the Finance Director for Primary Heath Care, Inc.

CPAs have 40-hours of continuing education requirements each year. Nancy decided she did not want her CPA license to lapse - it was not required of her new position - so she maintained her education. This helped Nancy transition smoothly back into public accounting when she was ready.

Nancy J. Beechum, CPA, PLC Adel Iowa
Office at 608 Greene St. Ste 1

In January 2014 she was able to see her youthful dream realized when she opened her own business and "hung her shingle" in Adel, becoming a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Iowa Society of CPSs.

Nancy and her husband Richard moved to a small farm south of Adel in 2007.

It was the proximity to Des Moines, friends, and small town charm that drew the couple to Adel, as well as an open position for Richard as the Transportation Director at the ADM School District.

Nancy's practice focuses primarily on small business accounting and taxes, as well as corporate and individual income tax preparation.

Nancy states that people often misunderstand the true scope of analysis she can provide, both for individuals and businesses.

Individuals often forget about their taxes until January. But there are numerous events that occur throughout the year that may impact the amount of taxes owed, to you or the government. Big changes such as marriage, children, and death are common knowledge, but did you know that taking on a second job, winning a contest, getting a raise or receiving inheritance could bump you into a higher tax bracket?

Nancy also suggests that individuals review the manner in which they plan for January tax season. Perhaps you view your tax return as a savings account, paying more throughout the year and banking on a large return in the spring.

For some, it might be more beneficial to pay less in taxes each paycheck - resulting in more money in your pocket now, and a smaller return. Other families may need to pay a few dollars more per pay period to help reduce the amount of taxes owed at year-end.

Nancy states, "it's a balancing act. If you're struggling to pay bills each month or something changes in your life, you might want to talk to an accountant. Accounting and taxes aren't age dependent. It's more what's going on in your life that makes an impact."

For many business owners understanding the financial aspects of their business goes beyond balancing the checkbook. Nancy helps prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and budgets, handles payroll taxes and filings, and can provide cash flow and budget analysis.

Whether your company is planning to open a new location or buy new equipment, Nancy can provide a fresh prospective and insight to help you make informed decisions and plan for the future.

Aronia berries
Nancy and Richard grow Aronia berries

When Nancy is out from under her "little green visor", she and her husband like to spend time with their children and grandchildren. They are also farmers, growing aronia berries, a new niche crop to Iowa that is changing the agricultural landscape. Aronia berries are high in antioxidants and until recently, were not grown in North America. Last year, Nancy and Richard saw their first crop, amounting to 400 pounds of aronia berries and are excited for this year's return, hopefully producing more than 1,000 pounds of berries.

Choosing an accountant is an important step towards becoming aware of your finances, but what makes one accountant better than another? Nancy states, "Accounting is about trust. I don't go home and talk about my clients, and people don't need to worry that their personal information is being shared. To be honest, I would much rather talk about the funny little kids Richard gets to see each day! And businesses don't need to worry - I'm not planning on retiring any time soon."

Nancy is currently taking new accounts and is looking forward to a long, fruitful career in Adel. Her doorway is always open, but for best results, please call ahead to schedule an appointment with Nancy to discuss your personal and professional finances.

ISU Baby Siters Basics - Adel Iowa
Potential Sitters Learn Basics June 23 - 24th

Iowa State Extension and Outreach of Dallas County is ready for the return of Babysitting Basics, a two-day workshop for 5th grade youth and older, designed to teach essential child care skills.

Twenty seats are available for this training to be held at the Adel Public Library on Monday, June 23rd and Tuesday, June 24th from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

"The number one thing we provide in Babysitting Basics," said Lisa Mickelson, Extension Educator, "is to prepare youth with how to handle situations that may arise while they are providing care for infants and young children. We give them the skills and knowledge necessary to ensure they are the best babysitter they can be."

Babysitting Basics will address first aid, safety, essential information to gather from families, nutrition and age-appropriate toys and activities.

Guest speakers include Dallas County EMTs to cover compression-only CPR training and first aid, law enforcement officials to discuss emergency handling and a local youth who will share what's in her bag of "babysitting tricks."

"Being prepared, obtaining the proper information from parents and gaining knowledge on the topics we discuss will help make the experience a positive one for the sitter, the children and the parents," expressed Mickelson.

Cost for the two-day event is $20. Register with Lisa Mickelson at the Dallas County Extension office by calling (515) 993-4281.

Fill out the Registration/Medical Release Form and return to the Dallas County Extension Office.

Seats are beginning to fill up! Limited slots available!

4-H FFA Horse Show - Adel Iowa
Dallas County 4H/FFA horse Show June 28th

4-H & FFA Open Horse Show. Horses and riders get to strut their stuff

Winston Churchill is credited with saying, "No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle."

Those who own horses know caring for these giant animals means work, dedication and passion.

These characteristics will be easily seen during competition at the Dallas County 4-H and FFA Open Horse Show on Saturday, June 28.

This free event is open to the public to watch. Classes will include trail, in-hand, showmanship, English, Western, hunter hack, miniature mumping, pony pleasure, novice rider, pole bending, barrel racing and bareback. Both rider and horse will be put to the challenge as judges scrutinize the animal's walk, extended trot and canter.

Riders will have to prove themselves by displaying finesse pertaining to seat, hands and general horsemanship. Crowds will be pleased while watching riders maneuver during timed events as horses weave through a 6-pole pattern and in the shape of a clover leaf around barrels.

This event is open to all 4-H and FFA members in Iowa. Classes will be divided based on school grade as of September 15, 2013.

Cost to show is $5 per class or $30 for the whole day. All around hi-point champion buckles will be awarded to each division senior, intermediate and junior. Start Time: 9 a.m.

For complete rules visit www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas. Those interested in participating should contact Dallas County Horse Superintendent, Sarah Van Pelt, at dchorsesuper@gmail.com or (515) 491-7581 by June 27th.

Little Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show June 14th
Adel Quilting and Dry Goods Co. Have I told you about our quilt show?

June 14th is the Little Sister's Outdoor Quilt Show.

The name is a spin off of a very large and famous annual outdoor quilt show in Sister's Oregon.

We will hang quilts all around the quilt shop yard, between trees, etc. Customers bring their quilts for us to exhibit.

In connection with this show, we also have our annual sale of quilts and other sewn items. Many of these items are retired shop samples.

A local club, Quilt Circle of Friends, has also made several items that will be included in this sale.

The past 3 years, we have raised $1000 each year and presented it all to the Adel Library as a thank you for all the time spent in their large sewing room (aka to others as their large conference room).

Show hours are 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. There is no fee for this event.

BTerry Traveller - This Day in History
Terry Traveler - This Day Terry Traveler here to say "Don't Panic!"

Unless you've lost your towel or it's June 18th, otherwise known as International Panic Day.

If it IS June 18th, feel free to throw your hands in the air like you care all too much.

March around town with a sandwich board sign.

Sing most of the lyrics to that song about the end of the world.

Then wake up June 19th and celebrate World Sauntering Day - after that much panic, you've earned it.

But if you have lost your towel fellow traveler, a hearty promenade won't cut it. For where will you go without your trusty towel? The interstellar constructs of space and time simply weren't meant to be traversed sans terry cloth!

How will you hide from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal? As previously stated, don't panic! The acquisition of a new towel is not a complicated process, thanks to the best-selling novella, "Selecting Your Towel: Is Microfiber Right For You?"

In chapter 17 the author highlights the many locations across the galaxy that sell finely crafted towels, but of course you can't get there without one. And Chapter 42, sub-paragraph B outlines the many charitable organizations willing to share their towels with those in need.

But for a traveler trapped on Earth, the book's best advice is this: "have you looked under your bed yet?" *Proven 92% effective on M-Class planets.

Armed once again with the most massively useful tool in the galaxy, you are ready to face whatever panic inducing events are to come.

And remember: "any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

Happy travels!

Terry

Recipe of the Month
DDiscover Chef
Happiness Pie

The grandchildren are growing up so fast, which is a nice way to say the same of their mothers.

I remember when we first moved to Adel, my three daughters weren't much older than my three grandchildren are now.

As I watch the grand kids play and see them trying new things for the first
time, I have to smile.

I see hints of their mom and aunts spring to the surface.

And I laugh (to myself) when I hear my daughters laying down the law much in the same way we did, only to hear the same type of reaction we got, too.

So in honor of summer, family, and the fleeting moments of life here is a recipe from Cookie the
whole family can enjoy.

Happiness Pie

Directions
1. Fold together 1 cup of Creativity with 1 cup of Structure - set aside and let marinate.

2. In a separate bowl combine 3 tablespoons each of Sugar, Spice, and Nice with 2 tablespoon each Independence and Ambition. Add a dash of Courage, Defiance, and Arrogance for flavor.

3. Grease a large 9x13 pan with Understanding, then alternate layers of each mixture while sprinkling ample amounts of Love, Compassion, and Life Lessons throughout.

4. Bake at varying temperatures for spans of 1-100 years. Rotate the pan occasionally to prevent burning.

When serving, top each piece with a healthy dollop of Laughter and a sprig of mint.

Best when shared.

Enjoy!
Remembering Our Fallen
Remembering Our Fallen Exhibit - Adel Iowa

"REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN"

Photo Exhibit of Iowa's Fallen on Display at Adel Public Library June 10-14, 2014

The Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of the Adel Public Library Foundation are sponsoring the "Remembering Our Fallen" exhibit at the Adel Public Library.

This exhibit is an emotional reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by over 80 Iowans killed in the War on Terror while wearing our country's uniform in Afghanistan or Iraq.

The exhibit will be available for viewing during normal library hours June 10-14.

"The warriors of the 21st Century, professionals, who volunteered to join the United States Armed Forces, grew up in the shadow of September 11, 2001, a defining moment for most of them.

They come from all walks of life and every corner of our country, daring to go where so many never would.

They retain the face of freedom and build upon the legacies of those who went before them in a cause greater than themselves."

"We can never forget those who sacrificed everything for our freedom. We must remember these American Heroes and speak their names when we see their family members," said Colonel James R. Biernesser, USAF (Ret.), Director of Military Affairs for Bellevue University.

"This exhibit is created so it can travel easily throughout Iowa, so that more people will have the opportunity to honor and remember Iowa's Fallen."

DETAILS:

"Remembering Our Fallen" will be on display June 10, 2014 to June 14, 2014 at the Adel Public Library during regular library hours.
