BJared Schmidt - SKC Financial Group

SKC Financial Adel Iwa

Jared Schmidt and SKC Financial Group Adel Iowa
Jared, Lauren, Hannah, and Sawyer Schmidt
We met with Jared Schmidt at the SKC Financial office on 9th St., next to the American Legion Hall in Adel.

Jared and his family currently live in the apartment over his office, although they are planning on an acreage in the near future that they can grow organic vegetables/fruits and naturally raised animals.

Jared was raised on a farm in Northwest Iowa. He left Iowa when he enlisted.

After the service he attended college. He has lived in Colorado, Texas, and now back in Iowa.

His family includes his wife, Lauren and two children, Hannah & Sawyer.

When he returned to Iowa he worked at the Mass Mutual Financial Group.

After 5 years of trying to find his place in the financial services industry he helped Norm Wright create SKC Financial Group.

Jared has always been dedicated to excellence within all of his endeavors. He is currently attending The American College for his Masters in Financial planning.

He is involved with numerous community programs which include serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in need and the Adjutant for the American Legion in Adel.

His concern for the Legion hall has seen him spearhead several campaigns to continue the repair of the current Hall.

Jared and the SKC Financial Group:

Q. What is a brief history of your company?
A. "SKC Financial Group was started In 2011 by Jared and Norm Wright. It has now grown to 6 people. SKC is comprised of financial planning, investment & insurance experts."

Q. Please describe your typical client.
A. "Business owner, entrepreneur minded individual that wants to take control of their money. They have to be serious about their finances and be savers."

Q. What factors do you use to determine the best investment options for your clients?
A. "There are a lot of factors that determine a proper investment for an individual. The problem is that people spend time worrying about the investments they have in the market but do very little to reduce other expenses that could increase wealth if able to recapture those expenses, like interest on debt."

Q. What is your opinion of the current financial market? Do you have any ideas on how to turn it around?
A. "We are in trouble; there are a lot of things that will be happening over the next 10yrs that could keep the market down.

How to turn it around? That is the answer to ask and I am not sure I have the answer. Control what you can control and don't worry about what you can't but beware of those things that can affect you.

If a person is responsible with their finances and take risk when it makes sense to that person then they have a fighting chance. People need to stop listening to the financial industry telling them what to do with your money, you don't always have to have money in the market and you don't have to put money in IRAs & 401ks.

Are you really saving taxes in a qualified plan by deferring those taxes into the future to an unknown tax rate? You do need to save but we confuse investing with savings. Anytime your money goes in the market it is an investment, it is not a savings plan. Like I said if the investment doesn't make sense to you then don't do it."

Q. Can you explain, briefly, how the financial markets work?
A. "Its all about supply and demand, if someone wants to sell a stock or bond it is only worth what a buyer will give you for it."

Q. How has the current market affected your business?
A. "2008 stock market crash was difficult as it made me question all of my training. It made me think outside the box and look for strategies that are not normally taught."

Q. What is your investment philosophy in simple terms?
A. "My investment philosophy is to take risk at strategic times and to protect your money on a normal basis. People have been trained to take unnecessary risk with their money on a daily basis and I believe that should change."

Q. What are your thoughts on retirement planning?
A. "It's a necessary evil but projecting many years into the future is absolutely impossible.  We may be able to project 5 years but with that said everyone that is working and saving money should talk to an experienced adviser.

The problem is that there are very few good advisers.  If you adviser does not make you think differently about your money then you should continue to look for another. As I said earlier, if the advice does not make sense to you then don't do it, find someone that does."

Q. How do you get new investment ideas?
A. "I get sold to numerous times a week; people are always calling me up and trying to get me to sell an investment or product. I listen to all of them and look more seriously into the ones that I believe may have a place in my clients' life. After looking at all of the pros and cons of each idea then I suggest it to a client when I think it is suitable."

Q. What is the purpose of life insurance and who needs it?
A. "There can be many purposes of life insurance but the main purpose is to leave tax free money to someone that relies on you when you pass. So if someone relies on you then you should have life insurance. Everyone should take a second look into life insurance but be careful as there are insurance agents that will mislead to get a sale. Life insurance should get more attention than any other insurance product, not because it is more important but because there are so many things that a person can do with a properly funded life insurance product."

Q. Why should clients choose your company?
A. "If you sit down with me you will hear and see solutions that 95% of other advisers will not even address. I look beyond the traditional financial products and I truly believe we need to keep control of our money versus giving all control to someone else."

Title: Pharmacy Manager

Work Experience: After graduating from Drake, I worked for a small retail chain in Minneapolis for 1 year then came to Adel to manage Adel HealthMart on July 1, 2008.

Favorite part of working here: I would have to say the people I interact with everyday make my job enjoyable.

My favorite part about being a pharmacist is the fact that everyday is different, its challenging, but the people of Adel and the small town feel is what I grew up with and what I enjoy the most.

Outside of work: In the summer you can find me golfing or waterskiing and boating...anything to be outdoors. I have a lot of family and good friends close by that I enjoy spending time with.

Chicken Gyros

When the girls were little we'd make gyros, pronounced "yeer-ohs" from a kit.

They were never as good as the ones we'd have at local Greek restaurant, so we set out to make our own.

I tried my hand at the lamb loaf version and quickly decided that the chicken version would work just fine with a lot less work.

Although you can make your own flat bread, I use the ones from the Fareway store here in town.

My version doesn't use the "Tzatziki sauce", but it incorporates the same flavors into the sandwich.

Ive made it both ways, it's a time thing really, and I've included the sauce in case you're a purist.

Chicken Gyros

Chicken Prep:
Ingredients:
4 thinly sliced boneless chicken breasts
1 teaspoon Bsalmic Vinegar
4 Cloves Minced Garlic
3 T. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 tsp. Black Pepper
Dash of Salt

1. Place above ingredients in a bowl.
2. Mix together
3. Add chicken
4. Marinate in refrigerator over night.

Ingredients:
3 T. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 sliced Onion
3 Cloves Minced Garlic
4-8 Pita Flat Breads
1 Thinly Sliced Tomato
8 oz. Greek Yogurt
1 Peeled Cucumber, very thinly sliced.

Directions:
1. Add olive oil to skillet and heat.

2.
Add chicken to hot skillet, turning occasionally until almost golden.

3.
Add sliced onions and garlic, cook onions until tender.

4.
Remove from heat.

5.
Spray a second skillet lightly with non-stick spray.

6.
Heat over medium heat.

7.
Place a flat bread on the skillet for 20-30 seconds until slightly toasted, flip and repeat. Caution, it's easy to over cook which results in a hard to fold sandwich.

8.
Once heated, remove and repeat with remaining bread. Keep warm under a towel.

9.
Spread a tablespoon of yogurt on a flat bread. Cover one half with thin layer of cucumbers an a tomato.

10.
Add a scoop of chicken and onions to second side.

11.
Fold in half and serve. Note: if it won't fold, decrease ingredients.

12.
Repeat with remaining bread and meat.

Serves 4

Variations:
Substitute cucumbers and Yogurt for "Tzatziki sauce"

Ingredients:
8 oz. Greek Yogurt, drained for 2-3 hours in cheese cloth.
1 Cucumber, peeled, seeded and pureed. Drained in cheese cloth for 1 hour.
2 T. Olive Oil
1/2 Lemon, juiced
Salt, Pepper to taste
3 Peeled Cloves Garlic.

Directions:
Blend until throughly mixed. Transfer to a covered container, refrigerate overnight.

Enjoy!
