Feature6th Annual Brick Street Classic Car Show June 5
Brick Street Classic 6th Annual

June 5th is the 6th Annual Adel Brick Street Classic Car Show and it's promising to be better than ever! Hosted on Adel's historic downtown square and famous brick streets, this annual event showcases more than 100 restored classic cars.

We spoke with John Standley of Adel Auto Parts Corporation and sponsor of the show to find out more about this great event.

Adel Brick Street Car Show 3The show was first started by Julie Baldon who had the foresight to know how important an annual car show could be for Adel.

John, a classic car enthusiast, became involved the following year and has been an important part of the event ever since.

When asked why mechanics enjoy the Adel Brick Street Car Show, participants state it is because of how welcoming the town is and love the people who come out to admire their hard work.

Over the past few years John has been tracking the entries and has found that 25% of the cars come from the Adel zip code, which is great for organizers and sponsors to hear.

Some even come 175 miles to show their handiwork. John has spoken with mechanics who have built cars specifically to be in the Brick Street Classic Car Show!

Registration is from: 11-1 pm. Car show entry fees are $12 in advance, $15 day of show. Awards will be presented at 4 pm.

"We award the top 20 cars at the show, Best of Show, and Most Likely to be Stopped By the Police - this category can be anything, from the flashiest paint job to the fastest car.

All judging is done by other presenters at the show and festival goers."
In addition to some of the finest cars at a show this summer, there will be local food and craft vendors, and live music performances by VooDoo3.

So get your family and friends together and join us for the Adel Brick Street Classic Car Show!

For more information on the car show or to register, contact John Standley at 515-993-4248 or by email at jpstandley@aol.com.

Terry's Travels - Baldon and Son Hardware
Terry's Travels in Adel Iowa
Each month, Terry journeys through our community enjoying the sights, sounds, deals, and meals that make Adel great! This month, Terry made some repairs with the help of Baldon and Son Hardware.

As the weather gets nicer, I start getting the home remodeling bug. My house is in a constant state of change and this spring I decided to build a new room. Thank goodness for Baldon and Son Hardware!

The staff at Baldon's is very helpful and friendly. Every time I came in I was welcomed and assisted right away. Some trips I knew what I needed, other times I needed help troubleshooting. Many of my plumbing plunders over the years have been fixed by making a short visit to Baldon's.

One of the best things about Baldon and Son Hardware is location. It never fails, I'll be in the middle of a project, covered in dirt or paint, and the one thing I need, I don't have.

To run to Des Moines takes the time to clean up, drive in, find a parking space, find the part (without help), drive back, and put my work clothes back on. All said and done I'm looking at 2 or 3 hours of project time lost. Running to Baldon's and back takes 10 minutes max.

With the helpful service, reasonable prices and saving on gasoline, that's a great deal in my book.

The room is done and looks great. Now I just need a set of doorknobs... Baldon's here I come!

Brick Street Repair Project Update
downtown

Monday, May 24th, 2010 was a historic day for Adel, fitting for a city known for its history. The Adel City Council approved a brick street project for the historic downtown district.

This is the first major brick street project in Adel in about 100 years and that historic point was not lost on the city council as they discussed the bids and awarding of the contract.

Mayor James F. Peters and Councilmen Don Price and Jon McAvoy noted how long the community has discussed rehabilitating the brick streets. This project had its start about 2 1/2 years ago, but the city has discussed what to do with the streets for more than twenty years.

Jeff Schug, McClure Engineering, was pleased to present three bids for the project and recommended Manatts to the council as the low bidder. With bid prices coming in about 15% below the engineer's estimate, the council was able to accept not only the base bid, but both specified alternates as well. Final price: around $1.8 million.

This will make for a more complete project and one in which the community can really take pride in. There has also been discussion about how to promote the City's recent inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places into the street project and make the listing on the Register an integral part of the finished product.

Small Business Makes
Big Impact

Small Business owners are the lifeblood of the communities in which they live and work.

The National Federation of Independent Business' Research Foundation found that 71% of Americans feel that small business has a positive impact on our country!

When you think about the impact our local businesses have on the community it's easy to see why.

In addition to the direct creation of jobs and tax base, our local businesses contribute enormous amounts of time and hours to our community.

A few facts to consider
91% of small business owners support their community through volunteering, in-kind, or cash donations.

Estimated annual value of each business owners contributions is $6,600.

75% volunteer the equivalent of 18 working days per year or more.

78% of every dollar spent locally remains in the community

Civic clubs, community groups, youth sports and athletic teams, community improvement projects are possible in large part due to the generous support of our local small business owners.

Adel Partners thanks our 2010 membership for their continued support and in helping us to make Adel the community we all want it to be.

Recipe of the Month
DDiscover Chef
Strawberry-Rhubarb Upside Down Cake

When our kids were learning how to cook they came across their Mom's collection of recipes.

"What's this one?" they asked, pulling out scraps of paper. "Um, let me see" was always the answer.

Some recipes had titles, but most were only a list of ingredients. Others didn't have directions, just oven settings.

Lori's recipe keeping has been making us smile for years, so when we asked for her Strawberry-Rhubarb Upside Down Cake, I wasn't surprised to receive the list of ingredients without the directions.

Lori caught it right away and we both chuckled. After 30 years, she still makes me laugh.

Today I offer the recipe, and directions, as a great way to kick off your summer.

Enjoy!

Ingredients:
2 1/2 c Fresh Rhubarb, chopped

2 1/2 c Fresh Strawberries, sliced

1 c White Sugar

3 c Miniature Marshmallows

1 (3 oz) Pkg Strawberry Flavored Jell-O

1 (18.25 oz) Pkg Yellow Cake Mix

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9x13 pan.

Mix Rhubarb, Strawberries Sugar and Jell-o; Pour mixture into bottom of pan.

Spread marshmallows evenly over fruit.

Mix cake batter according to package directions; pour over marshmallows in pan.

Bake for approx. 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Run a knife around the outer edge of the cake to loosen; turn out onto a large serving plate while still hot.

Allow the cake to cool before serving.

Enjoy!
