So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

Pi Lovana - Owner of Prive' Nails & Tan in Adel, Iowa
Pi Lovana
- Privé Nails & Tan

Spring in here and summer is just around the corner.

This month we spoke with Privé Nails & Tan in Adel to learn more about the nail salon, just in time for sandal season.

The nail salon at 628 Nile Kinnick Drive was formerly known as Daisy Nails, which opened in 2013.

The location was well known for great customer service and the latest trends in nails with a large selection of designer colors, fashions, and techniques.

In March 2015, Daisy took a break from the salon to spend time with her family and newborn baby. She sold the business to her friend Pi Lovana, graduate of Capri College in Cedar Rapids, who has been a nail technician since 2004.

Pi, his fiance Alissa, or "the brains as we call her", and Kotianna are excited to carry on the top quality customer services in Adel. He chose to keep the Daisy Nails name during the remodel and is happy to say "Now we can call it our own shop. Privé, pronounced 'pre-vay' is French meaning private or exclusive," which speaks to the high quality services and products.

Privé Nails & Tan now offers a much bigger location to facilitate more service stations and product displays. The shop now offers 5 pedicure massage chairs, multiple nail stations and two tanning beds.

With the additional space, Pi and his team asked clients what services they would like added to the shop. Tanning was the number one request.

The salon now has two tanning beds to service client needs. Bed #1 is high pressure and slightly larger with advanced technology. Bed #2 is slightly smaller with lower pressure - it is ideal for clients who are new to tanning and fair skinned.

Monthly tanning packages are available for a base fee plus per session charge. For those that tan regularly, this is less expensive than the pay-per-minute option.

"We have lots of lotions, goggles, and stickers to make sure you have everything you need to tan. Goggles are very important; you've got to have those. We evaluate your skin type, when you last tanned, figure out how long you can tan, and which bed is better for you. We like offering tanning-its been busy- and helped us a lot."

Privé also offers facials, lash extensions, waxing services, manicures, pedicures, and collagen gloves.

Nail services include Manicures, Acrylic, Gels, Shellacs, and Pink and Whites - also known as French tips.

Privé Nails & Tan offers three different pedicures. The exclusive Diamond Pedicure includes all organic products starting with a foot soak that bubbles and looks like crushed diamonds, foot masque, hot stone massage, and hot towel wrap.

In addition to services, the nail salon sells professional quality haircare products, nail polish, and more.

If there is a specific product you use that you can't find, just ask! Privé Nails & Tan can get it for you.

Privé Nails & Tan is open 7 days a week, Monday-Friday 10am-7pm, Saturdays 10am-5pm, and Sundays noon-5pm.

It is always best to make an appointment for salon services- the three person team is looking to hire 2-3 additional nail technicians to keep up with demand. Walk-ins are welcome for tanning services, as the wait is usually less.

Pi currently live in Des Moines and commutes every day. He likes Adel, yet being raised in a bigger city, he's still getting used to the nuances of small town life.

"We love what we do- and we're fun to be around- its always a good time here. At Privé Nails & Tan we're here to satisfy our customers.

The people in Adel are really great, really friendly. I never knew Adel was here until we came to look at Daisy.

Then I started working here, and we have really nice people coming in. Adel is a good community."

With a big smile and hearty laugh he adds, "but I'm still trying to figure out why everything is closed on Sunday!"

Recipe of the Month -
Healthy Shrimp Scampi

Our daughters enjoy cooking dinner for us, something that started with our 30th birthdays. To them, 30 seemed unimaginable and well worth celebrating.

Our eldest was just old enough (and tall enough) to cook a few items without help. She instructed her younger sisters to make gifts while she prepared dinner.

Together they arranged full place settings around our kitchen table,  took drink orders of milk, water, or coffee, and folded paper towels into decorative triangles.

When dinner was ready we were called into the kitchen to feast on Macaroni and Cheese, green beans, and fruit cocktail. We were presented with homemade coupon books for free hugs, foot rubs, and the offer to do their chores without being asked first. For dessert we had Saltine crackers with frosting.

Today, the menu items have developed into fancier fare, but the teamwork has stayed the same.
This recipe comes from one of those team building events. Enjoy!

Healthy Shrimp Scampi
51-60 Shrimp, deveined and thawed
6 Garlic Cloves, sliced thin and divided
1/2 Red Onion, diced and divided
1/2 Red Pepper, diced and divided
1 bunch fresh Kale, cleaned and chopped
1 can Diced Tomatoes, drained
2 T. Herbs de Provenance
1 Box Thin Spagetti
Fresh Parmesan Cheese, grated
Olive Oil

Bring large pot of water to boil for Pasta while preparing Scampi.

Heat 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil in fry pan. Saute Garlic and Onion.
Toss Kale and cook over low heat until Kale has reduced to half its volume and is bright green. Set aside.

In same pan, add 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil.
Saute Herbs de Provenance, remaining Garlic, Onion, and Red Peppers. Once fragrant, add Shrimp and toss.

Cook Pasta as directed.

Cook Shrimp until pink. Add Tomatoes and Kale mixture, cook until hot.

Toss Shrimp Scampi with Pasta. Top with Parmesan Cheese.

Terry Traveler - This Day
Terry Traveler - Cup of Gossip

Terry Traveler here, buzzing to tell you something you may already know. One of the things I really love about small towns are the coffee haunts. You know, the places people go everyday at dawn to sit and chat and enjoy a cup of decent coffee.

I say decent because I'm not talking about a "Grande Triple Espresso Sugar-Free Vanilla Almond Milk Cappuccino with Extra Foam."

I'm talking about that bitter, dark brown brew that comes in a glass pot with an orange plastic handle so you know if its Decaf. Coffee poured by someone that calls you "Honey" and tops off your cup after you've taken just a swig or two.  Coffee the way it was made in 1795.

I had a pot or two of "joe" this morning if you couldn't tell. Coffee, coffee, coffee!

Now, I like sitting in those coffee haunts for a few reasons. One is the coffee, but don't get me started on that. Two, the people. Its the same wait staff day in and day out, with smiling faces and good attitudes. They put up with my old jokes and I put up with being called "Honey". Sitting next to me is always somebody with a story to tell about local politics, the latest gossip, suggestions for gout or phlebitis, and complaints about the same haircut I've gotten every week for the past 10 years, not that anyone can see it under the hood of this here orange parka. Yes, its the people that make my coffee place something special.

Storytelling around coffee is different in Paris, France- mainly because they speak French. People drink pretty decent tea in England but tea-time gossip is a lot of name dropping about aristocrats. You'd think Columbia would be home of great coffee talk but I always got the cold shoulder when I tried to snazzy-up the conversation with a bit of radical ideology for some reason.

It's the flavor of the gossip, more than the flavor of the coffee, that goes a long way to help me choose my coffee haunt. I don't want to hear personal gossip- I want to hear about big picture gossip. News-worthy gossip: farm reports, the weather, the new storefront downtown. The kind of gossip that is spoken loudly, never in hushed tones. Gossip that owns a sense of right and wrong- no matter how correct or inaccurate it may prove to be. The kind of good-hearted gossip that make small towns great.

This is Terry saying serve me another piece of old-school conversation pie and pour me another mug of that wonderful coffee to wash it down.
