Dear Friend of Adel,
Mother's Day is May 10th this year, which seems fitting. I got a note on the 24th from Michelle Roling, "Hi--- Alex and I just got notification today we are approved to TALK to the Board-4 precious minutes!"
Michelle Roling and her son are going to speak before the FDA on May 12th regarding a new drug to combat Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Both of her sons have CF and an approved drug to fight CT would be a welcomed present this Mother's Day. Our prayers go with them that those "4 precious minutes" be sufficient. God speed to Michelle and family, please remember them on the 12th.
If you've been uptown lately, you've noticed the construction crews working on several of the businesses. We have an update from Karina Ward on Adel's Downtown Revitalization and Facade Project. It's really starting to take shape and i encourage you to stop by and see the changes.
Terry is back, this month with a review of the Rendezvous. I'm not saying Terry is a split personality, but the reviews are always spot on and coherent, as opposed to some of Terry's travel experiences and views of the world as Terry sees them. Fear not, if you miss the "unique" side of Terry, it is sure to return next month.
So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

Adel's Downtown Revitalization and Facade Project Update
This month we spoke with the Adel Partners Chamber Director Karina Ward to learn more about the recent downtown construction and facade project.
Construction is underway on many of the buildings selected to be part of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for downtown revitalization in Adel.
The $1 million project will provide a face-lift for 16 buildings around the courthouse square and along Main Street; restoring and rehabilitating storefronts throughout Adel's historic district.
The project is funded by a $500,000 grant from the Iowa Development Authority along with matching funds from the City of Adel and participating building owners.
As the grant is directly associated with the National Register of Historic Places, architects have worked with business owners and city officials to facilitate historically appropriate designs for new windows, awnings, doors, and masonry work.
The new facades will help bolster tourism, encourage new business development, and instill a rejuvenated sense of community pride in Adel citizens.
The Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce is managing the project under Karina's direction and has helped facilitate the grant from the earliest stages. "Some of the work has been highly visible such as the massive overhaul of the Rendezvous Lounge's restored façade. Other work, such as masonry or brick repairs and new upper story windows, is less visible. Substantial completion is currently scheduled for May 29th. There will be a few minor items remaining at that time, but all major work should be completed before June."
Many businesses have mentioned to Karina that they plan to complete additional masonry repairs, new flooring, and fresh interior paint jobs. Several vacant buildings in the area will see an increased marketing strategy once construction is complete. "All businesses taking advantage of the CDBG grant will remain open during construction. There may be some disruption to the entrances as doors are replaced, but nothing that will cause closures.
The work will be completed before summer is in full swing, leaving a fresh new look to showcase during the 36th Annual Sweet Corn Festival August 7th and 8th."
The best way to stay updated on the Downtown Revitalization and Façade Project is by following Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AdelPartnersChamberofCommerce, where Karina continues to share photos as the project progresses.

LSB Insurance congratulates our graduating seniors and encourages you to celebrate safely as you look forward to bright futures.
Safety Tips for Prom and Graduation
- Absolutely no alcohol or drugs
- Always use seat belts
- No cell phone use (including texting) while driving
- Parent, make sure you know the itinerary of the evening, as well as who else will be with your teen. Get contact information for everyone.
- Have a way to contact your teen at all times. You may want to require them to check in with you once or twice over the course of the evening.
- Set a curfew, whether they are coming back to your home or staying with a friend. If they are staying elsewhere, make sure the curfew will be enforced by a responsible adult.
- Discuss how to handle difficult situations, such as facing pressure to drink, or accepting a ride with someone who shouldn't be driving.
- If you're worried about your teen driving, consider alternate transportation. A car service or limousine will provide a responsible, experienced adult driver. You also will be able to limit changes to the itinerary and contact the driver.

Save the Date! Toddler-Fest May 2nd
| All twelve libraries in our county worked with the local 4RKids ECI to create the first Dallas County Toddler Fest last April at the Dallas County Fair Grounds.
Toddler Fest provide opportunities for families to learn about resources available in Dallas County as well as promote literacy by giving away free books.
Each organization was encouraged to provide a free activity for children ages 2 -5 and their parents/caregivers as well as to promote their services.
We had 451 adults and children attend and we gave away 262 books.
We have changed the date to Saturday, May 2nd from 10 am - noon so we can have two buildings this year. That was one of the requests from last year that it was too crowded.
Here are a list of the organizations that are attending this year:
4RKids, Dallas County Children's Advocacy Council, Child Care Resource and Referral, Partners in Family Development, Dallas County Health Department, ISU Extension and Outreach, New Opportunities, Crisis Intervention & Advocacy Center, Blank Park Zoo, Science Center of Iowa, HomeCare Services Transportation, Integrative Counseling Solutions, Inc., Happy Feet, Songs and Signs, LLC., Bricks 4 Kidz, Faiths Flock Preschool, Usborne Books & More, Young Living Essentials.
We will also have Kid Pics I.D. Cards provide by the Dallas County Sheriff's Benevolence, face painting, princesses and a petting zoo.
The Dallas County Library Association and 4Rkids are the sponsors. 4Rkids pays for the books. We hope that it grows even more this year. Each child will receive a free book just for attending the festival.

The Roling Family to Speak at FDA Hearing
| Hello- Greetings - we've talked in the past about my business/eating disorders etc.
This time I'm contacting you about something even more personal for me and that I have even more commitment to- Cystic Fibrosis! I am the mom of two sons with CF 19 (at ISU) and 16- sophomore at ADM HS. On May 12 the FDA is holding a hearing on a miracle medication which will be a game changer for my boys and all those who have the genetic combination of double deltaF508. I would love to help get the information out to Iowan's about this amazing breakthrough happening! I decided to go to the hearing - I simply need to be there... and my 19 year old son will be done with finals and is going as well.
We started a go fund me - and people have rallied - we are nearly funded to go - I was waiting to reach out to you until we had that part nearly done, as my focus is not on "us"; however, the cause! I was on the subcommittee for the Iowa Health Department when we got the bill passed for ALL newborns in Iowa to be tested for CF and just Have to be in DC for this! Information about the trip.
Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee Meeting Announcement The CF walk in Des Moines is on May 16 and it would be wonderful for people to SEE their donations to CF are making a difference, AND to encourage them to see the need for dollars now! Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Additionally, the timing of the FDA doing this on May 12 is amazing as May 13 is rally day on Capital Hill for Eating Disorder Awareness! Without a shadow of a doubt, I knew I was supposed to be going to DC this month! I hope you will be able to help spread the word!

Harvey's Ribbon Cutting Open House - May 8

|
Valerie and Mike Sutton, Hoyt, Paisley, and Krue - New Owners of Harvey's Greenhouse and Adel Flowers and Gifts
|
Please join Harvey's Greenhouse on Friday, May 8th at 3:00 pm for our Ribbon cutting and Open House.
We welcome you to be part of this celebration.
Harvey's Greenhouse was established in 1901 by Cyrus E. Harvey. It started off as a nursery, offering a wide selection of trees, berry plants, shrubs, flowers, and fruits.
Cyrus sold the business to his nephew, John W. Harvey in 1922. John purchased the current location in Adel in 1956 and he then sold the business to his son, Don and Mary Harvey in 1976.
This Spring, Harvey's Greenhouse was sold to Don and Mary's granddaughter, Valerie and Mike Sutton. One Hundred and Fourteen years of business in central Iowa from one family.
Mike and Valerie are both originally from Adel and will be moving back this summer. They have 3 children, Paisley (8), Hoyt (4), and Krue (3). Valerie studied Horticulture in college and Mike studied Animal Science. Both ended up in the underground construction industry and currently operate Midwest Augers, Inc., a horizontal auger boring business.
The two businesses happen to fit together nicely with Harvey's busiest season in the 1st and 2nd quarters and Midwest Augers in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Mike and Valerie credit their outstanding employees for making all of this possible. Outside of work, The Sutton's spend their time cheering on soccer games, applauding dance performances, worshiping God, and visiting Disney World.
The Sutton's plan to uphold the traditions and offerings of Don & Mary Harvey, but also plan to expand and grow the business. Harvey's currently offers a wide variety of Cactus and Succulents, Herbs, Annuals, Perennials, Tropicals, Scented Geraniums, Water Plants, House Plants, Vegetables, Trees, Shrubs, and a full service Florist. Harvey's prides themselves in growing the items that you won't find elsewhere, including vintage, rare, and brand new selections. The greenhouses are open year round and visitors are always welcome.

BASE® ERISA Wrap Offers Another Layer of Protection!
| Avoid $110 per-day per-employee Department of Labor penalty in the event of an audit with the BASE ERISA Wrap.
In March, BASE announced a new ERISA compliance service offered through the BASE ERISA Wrap.
The federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) mandates that employers/plan administrators must provide an SPD to each participant and that ERISA-covered plans be maintained in accordance with a written Plan Document.
Many businesses mistakenly assume that insurance contracts, certificates of insurance and benefits summaries fulfill the ERISA requirements for an SPD and Plan Document, but they don't include the required or recommended provisions that protect the plan, the employer and plan fiduciaries.
Why do you need it?
ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) requires employers who are plan administrators of their health and welfare benefit plans to maintain and distribute Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) to plan participants, while maintaining a written Plan Document to be made available to plan participants and beneficiaries upon request for every benefit you sponsor. While BASE® currently provides an SPD and Plan Document for your Premium Only Plan, if you sponsor any other benefits such as health insurance you may be out of compliance.
Quick Facts
- Virtually all employers who offer or sponsor benefits, regardless of size or number of participants must have an ERISA Wrap.
- In a random-sampling of plans by the Department of Labor, 7 out of 10 plans failed to comply with some aspect of ERISA's provisions.
- If you offer any type of health and welfare benefit plan (ie. medical plan, dental plan, Health Savings Account (HSA), prescribed drug plan, etc.), you must supply your employees with Summary Plan Descriptions and written Plan Documents.
- Insurance contracts, certificates of insurance and benefits summaries do not fulfill the ERISA requirements for an SPD and Plan Document.
BASE is a local Adel company providing employee benefits and compliance services to businesses across the country. Let us help you make sure you are fulfilling DOL requirements in the event of an audit by calling 1-888-386-9680 or visit http://www.baseonline.com/ERISA_Wrap.html to learn more.
