Dear Friend of Adel,
What a busy month May promises to be.
We've taken a shot at outlining a few of the events going on in Adel this summer. To be honest, there's just not enough room to get them all listed, but we're working hard to get them added as we become aware of them.
Terry returns again this month, with an as always "unique" view of events.
So grab a cup of coffee, there a lot going on this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

The Greatest Journey Begins...
| After Operation Christmas Child, The Greatest Journey Begins.
Operation Christmas Child is a ministry founded by Franklin Graham in which gift-filled shoeboxes are delivered to needy children around the world as a tangible expression of God's love.
But a shoebox is just the beginning!
It invites children in nearly 100 countries into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through a discipleship program, The Greatest Journey (TGJ).
YOU Can Be a Part of TGJ!
The Greatest Journey began 2,000 years ago. Jesus chose 12 men to disciple while He was on this earth, and He calls us to go and make disciples of all nations. You can help continue what Jesus started by discipling 12 children through The Greatest Journey program.
TGJ is similar to the Bible and Sunday school programs our children receive on a regular basis. It consists of 12 engaging Bible lessons that guide children to become devoted followers and bold witnesses for Christ. Children are invited back for the lessons following Operation Christmas Child shoebox distributions.
Upon completing all 12 lessons, children participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a New Testament Bible in their own language. Many children not only come to Christ through TGJ but also go on to share His love and Good News with their friends and families. Entire communities are finding salvation through Christ, churches are growing, and many new churches are being planted. God is powerfully working through this ministry!
The teacher training, leader materials, children's booklets, and New Testaments are free of charge to TGJ participants; however, the cost to produce these materials is $6 per child.
Think of that person who invested in you and helped you to grow in your faith. Aren't you glad they did? Now you have the opportunity to invest in the lives of children around the world.
For just $6 a month, you can disciple 12 children in one year. That's less than the cost of a postage stamp a day, one trip to Starbucks a month, or the price of a movie ticket. Think about it: How many times more valuable is bringing a child to eternal salvation through Christ than that short-lived caffeine buzz?!
We also ask that you pass this challenge along to your family and friends. You can do the math. Last year over one million children enrolled in TGJ. That's over $6 million needed. Together we can do this! Will you join in the effort?
To learn more or to participate, go to samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/the-greatest-journey . There you can get a taste of all 12 Bible lessons, gather more info, watch videos, and make an easy online donation. You can choose to make a one-time gift or to make a monthly commitment for a year. Thank you for the blessings you provide through these life-changing lessons!
Gift idea: In honor of a teacher who has made a spiritual impact on your life, disciple a child and then send the teacher a card of thanks, letting them know the difference they've made in your life and how those blessings are being carried forward and multiplied through your sponsorship of a child.
It's a way of saying, "Remember what you taught me? Remember how you made Christ real for me? Well, since I can't package you up and send you to a child half-way around the world, I'm going to sponsor another teacher to do what you did for me. I want other children to know how real Jesus is and how He loves them, too. I want to give them The Greatest Journey."

Terry Traveller - This Day in History
| My name is Terry Traveler and I speak for the Rhinoceros!
Back in 1962, I was working for a prominent zoo, taking photographs of wild animals along with my sidekick Dallas.
It was a warm, technicolor day in Africa when I first met Sean Mercer, Wild Animal Wrangler.
Oh sure, you could call him a hunter, but as the lead procurer of zoo animals, Sean preferred to capture the wild beasts alive only shooting when his life, or the life of his crew, were at stake.
Watching the team stalk, wrestle, and cage the animals was impressive, and often hilarious when ostriches were involved.
But there was nothing more frightening than watching his team capture a rhinoceros. Those proud, strong, and somewhat Jurassic-looking animals had no desire to be boxed up and sent to the Bronx.
Through the lens of my camera I witnessed the capture of several rhinos while riding with Sean's team, and each night sat beside the campfire discussing the morals of our actions.
Certainly the zoo was better than being poached, but were we really saving them? Our debates raged on over the years, and now, only 28,000 rhinos roam the world- some species numbering less than 100.
So, today, May 1st (also known as Save the Rhino Day) I choose to stand on my tree stump and proudly proclaim I speak for the rhinos!
I may not know what the best solution is to ensure their existence, but I can say that these majestic creatures deserve a fighting chance. Learn how you can help at www.savetherhino.org.

Recipe of the Month

Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce
I take BBQ very seriously.
I've eaten and cooked the different variations from across these great United States.
I know who serves slaw on the sandwich and who uses only white bread. Trust me, I obsess over BBQ.
These days, I tend to buy from my favorite catering venues and restaurants, but there was a time when BBQ meant 36 dedicated hours of work.
(This was in my pre-smoker days and I worked off a family recipe for doing ribs.)
I would start the process Friday night: Steaming various batches of pork ribs throughout the night to tenderize the meat and remove the excess fat.
You have to stop just before the meat slides off the bone.
During the slow times, I'd start making the perfect sauce.
Grabbing various ingredients out of the fridge and cupboard, tasting constantly.
Measurements were by what felt right in my hand. Once the meat was ready I'd cover the ribs with sauce on both side, seal it tightly in a plastic bag and let it marinade in the fridge.
Finally on Sunday the roasting pans full of meat would be carted out to the grill.
I sat quietly in the backyard, a cold glass in my hand, savoring the smokey, sweet smell of BBQ.
As each side caramelized, I'd cover it with sauce and flip it over to repeat the process until there was just enough sauce for the table.
The results were a tasty layered BBQ coating that merged well with the ribs.
They're similar to the ribs from "Big Daddy's" if you were ever fortunate enough to have enjoyed those.
This recipe "might", "should" be similar to the sauces I madke, but in true family tradition, the fun is in personalization!
