Vol. 43 May 2012
Dear Friend

As a kid I looked forward to May. Graduations meant a feast of food and visits with far away relatives. School was finishing up and the pool was soon to open.

My scout troop participated in the Memorial Day service at the cemetery. That proud tradition predated my troop and continues to this day in towns across the country.

In Adel, the Lions Club and the Scout troop get up early and place flags across the community. In the evening they gather them up. They repeat this on Flag Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day and Veteran's Day.

If you haven't ordered your flags yet, there is still time. Fill out the Holiday Flags Signup Form, attach a check for $20.00 and mail to one of the Lions listed at the bottom of the form.

This month we have an interview with Connie Doran, the new director of HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County. To get ready for summer there will be a Grill Demo at Adel Winterset TV & Appliance, news from  River Valley Golf Course, the Museum, the latest events from Around Town, news and events from the Adel Public Library, a Recipe from Home, and much more!

Have a great May. We look forward to seeing you in Adel this month!

Enjoy!

Chris

Dallas County Home Care - Adel Iowa

HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County welcomed Connie Doran as the new Executive Director on April 23rd.

We recently had a chance to sit down with her and discuss her new position.
Connie Doran Director of HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County
Connie DoranDirector of HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County

Connie and her husband Steve have four sons and 5 grandchildren.

She was working at a hospital in the 80's in Peoris Illinois.

She started a senior program group that eventually rose to 5500 seniors in the membership.

She had been inspired by Ken Dychtwald who was a pioneer in aging-related issues.

After a successful seven years she went to work at a nursing home.

When she began her position at a long-term care facility in Illinois the census was at 30% occupancy.

At the time she left, 9 years later, census had risen to 100%. Her next position was at a hospital, also in Illinois, where she was recruited to assist in increasing its market share.

She did so through re-branding, developing a program for seniors, and helping to lead a capital campaign, which resulted in a new outpatient and emergency wing.  After five years with the hospital she moved, with her husband, to Iowa to be close to children and grandchildren.

Within a few months of the move, she was recruited from Iowa to Illinois as Chief Executive Officer of a 5-county rape crisis center and domestic violence shelter and agency, where she worked for almost 6 years before joining HomeCare Services, Inc. as their new Executive Director.

Steve is an Energy Manager for the V.A. Connie just joined the Adel Rotary, which she has been a part of since 1991 as a "Paul Harris Fellow".

She is impressed by the top-notch quality of the staff, the town of Adel and Dallas County. Connie and Steve plan to make Adel their home.

HomeCare Services Inc. provides great services to seniors and the community; Home Maker services, Home delivered meals, HIRTA Bus transportation, and although they don't offer Nursing Services they help with referrals.

When asked about her vision for HomeCare Services, she expressed that the
current services are under utilized and she wants do more for the communities served.

These goals are dependent upon Federal and State Grant funding, donations and Community support.

If the past is an indicator, there are great changes ahead for HomeCare Services and the community.

HomeCare Services, Inc. will host the Adel After Hours on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This will be a great time to welcome Connie as the new Executive Director.

Hello,

All of us out here at River Valley are extremely excited about how great the course is looking this early into the season!

The grounds crew has been in full force getting the course ready for you all to come check it out. If you haven't had a chance to experience the beauty of the Raccoon River Valley, please come on out and see us.

We will begin opening at 6:00 a.m. on weekends, and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays starting May 1st. We stay open each day until Sunset.

Don't forget to start a Frequent Player Punch Card on your first time out. We will punch your card each time you play 18 holes, and you will receive a FREE round after every sixth round!

If you would rather get in some practice, we also have a full driving range with a practice chipping green & bunker. This a great way to spend some time on a nice evening. Tokens can be purchased at the clubhouse anytime during our open hours.

River Valley is also your one stop to shop for all your golf needs. We have a variety of balls from the major brands and always keep a stock of gloves on hand. Beyond the essentials, we also have some great polos, outerwear, and just got in some new t-shirts.

Our Proshop now has some options for clubs as well. Come out and try our Hippo clubs or take a look at some of the new Callaway clubs. For special orders, we have access to all major brands and will work hard to get you the best deal we can.

Don't forget to check out our many different golf hats we have here. We are also having a closeout sale on our remaining golf shoes. Some pairs are as low as $45!

Starting this May, we are taking signups for our Ladies' Night out at River Valley! If you and your friends are looking for a fun night out with friends then this is the league for you. It lasts for 10 weeks, and is only $200! This covers 9 holes with cart and prizes each night for all 10 weeks.

If that's not enough already, we also have a pre-party on the 24th of May to meet everyone before we start play the next week. There is also a post-party as a fun way to wrap up the last night of the league. We have fun 4-person formats each week that are great for golfers of all levels.

Please contact Kelly for more details, and she will be glad to help you sign up your team. Her email is: khartzler@rivervalleygolf.com. We can also help you find a group if you are interested, but don't have a team.

As we start into May, we are happy to begin hosting some great open tournaments. These are usually played as a 4-person scramble. Our website has more details on all the events we have coming up.

Please check back often, as we are constantly updating it with any new info. If anyone is interested in setting up an event out here at River Valley, please feel free to give us a call and we would love to work with you. We work hard to make sure you have a fun, successful event!

Speaking of upcoming events, we are proud to be hosting the 1A & 2A Girls State Golf Tournament again this year! The 2 day tournament will be held May 29th-30th. This is a great event for the girls, and we expect many people from all around the state to be coming to Adel to support them.

To make sure this big event goes smoothly, we are asking for volunteers. If you or someone you know may be interested in helping out on one or both of the days, please contact us at the clubhouse. We appreciate any help we can get to make this a great tournament for the girls.

We hope everyone is having a great Spring, and we look forward to seeing you all out here soon!

Thanks,

Curt

Cedar Creek Animal Clinic - Update
Cedar Creek Animal Clinic Banner

Hello!!  I just wanted to take a minute to let you know that I will be going on maternity leave next month. My last day in the office will be Tuesday, May 15th.

My husband, Peter, and I are extremely happy to welcome our first daughter into the world, and our son, Ethan, is looking forward to being a big brother.

I will be returning to the Adel office on Monday, July 16th. From July 16th-27th, I will be available in the afternoons, and on July 30th I will return to my normal office hours.

While I am on maternity leave Dr. John Holcomb will be filling in at the Adel office, with limited appointment times.

We will still offer 24-hour care thru the Winterset clinic, and the Adel office will remain open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., with some Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

If your pet has their routine wellness exam and/or vaccines coming up during the period I will be gone, you are welcome to schedule an earlier appointment with me, as I would enjoy seeing you before I leave, or Dr. Holcomb can see you and your pet when the time comes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me back or contact the office at 515-993-3410.

Recipe of the Month
DDiscover Chef
 Omelets 2 Go

This is one of the quirky recipes my grandmother Cookie tried on us when i was about twelve.

"Boiler" meals were big back then. If you don't remember that's not so bad, but you could buy your favorite meal in the frozen foods section.

It was encased in plastic and you boiled it over the stove.

My favorite was S.O.S., but that's a recipe for another day.

Cookie was always coming up with interesting recipes or twists in the kitchen.

My brothers and I were always willing to test the results.

There were many successes and an occasional one we promised to keep to ourselves.

This rainy day she envisioned "boiled omelets" for camping.

The thought was, you had to boil water to wash dishes, why not use the water for cooking first?

She had us get out the eggs, onions, peppers, garlic, ham, last night's fried potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms, and cheese.

We diced up the vegetables and ham, resulting in about a cup of each.

Except for the garlic that she limited to three cloves.

Then we took a large freezer bag and broke two eggs into it. Add a 1/4 of each ingredient, go easy on the garlic, and then mixed them up in the bag by squeezing the outside.

We added salt and pepper, sealed the bag and repeated it three more times.

Cookie dropped them in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes or so until they were done.

As they boiled, I was assigned toaster duty while my brothers grabbed the butter, ketchup, hot sauce and set the table.

Then we pulled them out with tongs, let them cool just long enough to open them.

They steamed so Cookie opened them facing away from us.

She emptied them, plopped one onto each of our plates.

They were actually very good.

After we ate, she had us use the water to wash and rinse the dishes.

Oh she was a clever woman.

We never did get to try this on a camping trip.

To this day I'm not sure if she ever intended to take it camping or if she just wanted to keep three boys busy on a rainy afternoon.

I've actually repeated this a time or two over the years, I'm looking forward to trying it with my grand kids once they get a little older.

We'll use the dish washer for the cleanup, but I won't tell if you don't.

  Omelets 2 Go

1 C. Diced Ham
1 C. Diced Onions
1 C. Diced Cheese

7. Drop in a pot of boiling water.
