Dear Friend
As a kid I looked forward to May. Graduations meant a feast of food and visits with far away relatives. School was finishing up and the pool was soon to open.
My scout troop participated in the Memorial Day service at the cemetery. That proud tradition predated my troop and continues to this day in towns across the country.
In Adel, the Lions Club and the Scout troop get up early and place flags across the community. In the evening they gather them up. They repeat this on Flag Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day and Veteran's Day.
If you haven't ordered your flags yet, there is still time. Fill out the Holiday Flags Signup Form, attach a check for $20.00 and mail to one of the Lions listed at the bottom of the form.
This month we have an interview with Connie Doran, the new director of HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County. To get ready for summer there will be a Grill Demo at Adel Winterset TV & Appliance, news from River Valley Golf Course, the Museum, the latest events from Around Town, news and events from the Adel Public Library, a Recipe from Home, and much more!
Have a great May. We look forward to seeing you in Adel this month! Enjoy!

Connie Doran - HomeCare Services Inc.
|
HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County welcomed Connie Doran as the new Executive Director on April 23rd.
We recently had a chance to sit down with her and discuss her new position.
| Connie DoranDirector of HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County |
Connie and her husband Steve have four sons and 5 grandchildren.
She was working at a hospital in the 80's in Peoris Illinois.
She started a senior program group that eventually rose to 5500 seniors in the membership.
She had been inspired by Ken Dychtwald who was a pioneer in aging-related issues.
After a successful seven years she went to work at a nursing home.
When she began her position at a long-term care facility in Illinois the census was at 30% occupancy.
At the time she left, 9 years later, census had risen to 100%. Her next position was at a hospital, also in Illinois, where she was recruited to assist in increasing its market share.
She did so through re-branding, developing a program for seniors, and helping to lead a capital campaign, which resulted in a new outpatient and emergency wing. After five years with the hospital she moved, with her husband, to Iowa to be close to children and grandchildren.
Within a few months of the move, she was recruited from Iowa to Illinois as Chief Executive Officer of a 5-county rape crisis center and domestic violence shelter and agency, where she worked for almost 6 years before joining HomeCare Services, Inc. as their new Executive Director.
Steve is an Energy Manager for the V.A. Connie just joined the Adel Rotary, which she has been a part of since 1991 as a "Paul Harris Fellow".
She is impressed by the top-notch quality of the staff, the town of Adel and Dallas County. Connie and Steve plan to make Adel their home.
HomeCare Services Inc. provides great services to seniors and the community; Home Maker services, Home delivered meals, HIRTA Bus transportation, and although they don't offer Nursing Services they help with referrals.
When asked about her vision for HomeCare Services, she expressed that the current services are under utilized and she wants do more for the communities served.
These goals are dependent upon Federal and State Grant funding, donations and Community support.
If the past is an indicator, there are great changes ahead for HomeCare Services and the community.
HomeCare Services, Inc. will host the Adel After Hours on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This will be a great time to welcome Connie as the new Executive Director.

Hello!! I just wanted to take a minute to let you know that I will be going on maternity leave next month. My last day in the office will be Tuesday, May 15th.
My husband, Peter, and I are extremely happy to welcome our first daughter into the world, and our son, Ethan, is looking forward to being a big brother.
I will be returning to the Adel office on Monday, July 16th. From July 16th-27th, I will be available in the afternoons, and on July 30th I will return to my normal office hours.
While I am on maternity leave Dr. John Holcomb will be filling in at the Adel office, with limited appointment times.
We will still offer 24-hour care thru the Winterset clinic, and the Adel office will remain open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., with some Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
If your pet has their routine wellness exam and/or vaccines coming up during the period I will be gone, you are welcome to schedule an earlier appointment with me, as I would enjoy seeing you before I leave, or Dr. Holcomb can see you and your pet when the time comes.

Recipe of the Month
| | Omelets 2 Go
This is one of the quirky recipes my grandmother Cookie tried on us when i was about twelve.
"Boiler" meals were big back then. If you don't remember that's not so bad, but you could buy your favorite meal in the frozen foods section.
It was encased in plastic and you boiled it over the stove.
My favorite was S.O.S., but that's a recipe for another day.
Cookie was always coming up with interesting recipes or twists in the kitchen.
My brothers and I were always willing to test the results.
There were many successes and an occasional one we promised to keep to ourselves.
This rainy day she envisioned "boiled omelets" for camping.
The thought was, you had to boil water to wash dishes, why not use the water for cooking first?
She had us get out the eggs, onions, peppers, garlic, ham, last night's fried potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms, and cheese.
We diced up the vegetables and ham, resulting in about a cup of each.
Except for the garlic that she limited to three cloves.
Then we took a large freezer bag and broke two eggs into it. Add a 1/4 of each ingredient, go easy on the garlic, and then mixed them up in the bag by squeezing the outside.
We added salt and pepper, sealed the bag and repeated it three more times.
Cookie dropped them in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes or so until they were done.
As they boiled, I was assigned toaster duty while my brothers grabbed the butter, ketchup, hot sauce and set the table.
Then we pulled them out with tongs, let them cool just long enough to open them.
They steamed so Cookie opened them facing away from us.
She emptied them, plopped one onto each of our plates.
They were actually very good.
After we ate, she had us use the water to wash and rinse the dishes.
Oh she was a clever woman.
We never did get to try this on a camping trip.
To this day I'm not sure if she ever intended to take it camping or if she just wanted to keep three boys busy on a rainy afternoon.
I've actually repeated this a time or two over the years, I'm looking forward to trying it with my grand kids once they get a little older.
We'll use the dish washer for the cleanup, but I won't tell if you don't.
Omelets 2 Go
Ingredients
8 Eggs
1 C. Diced Ham
1 C. Diced Onions 1 C. Diced Cheese 1 C. Diced Tomatoes 1 C. Diced Peppers 1 C. Diced Fried Potatoes
3 Cloves Diced Garlic
4 Large Freezer Bags
Make substitutes to your personal taste.
Directions
1. Stir the vegetables, cheese, and ham together in a bowl
2. Crack two eggs into a freezer bag, scramble the eggs by gently squeezing the bag.
3. Add a quarter of the mixture from the bowl
4. Salt and pepper
5. mix everything together in the bag.
6. Seal the bag and repeat with the other three bags.
7. Drop in a pot of boiling water.
8. Cook uncovered for ten to 12 minutes.
9. Get toast and condiments ready.
10. Remove with tongs from water. Pat outside dry with a towel
11. They're hot so be careful opening them
12. Place each omelet on a plate, add toast. Serves 4.
