"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 90 April 2016
One of the things I've always loved about living in Adel is taking evening strolls. The old trees, the brick streets, the 100 plus years of architecture that blends so well together. There's always a ball game some where along the path and folks wave as you walk by and give you a smile.

Our kids would chase the worms and squirrels along the sidewalk asking a myriad of questions about trees, bugs, and if the the river goes all the way to the ocean. Some of our best conversations have been on those walks.

Of course no journey would be complete with out an ice cream stop. It's had several names and owners over the last 30 years but it still serves the best ice cream in the county... as stated by my grand daughter.

This month we had the pleasure of talking with Billy, the owner of Billy's Ice Cream Store, the same one my granddaughter endorsed, as she was preparing for the season's opening day on April 1st.

So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel. While you're here, don't forget to stop and get sundae or cone.

- Billy's Ice Cream Store

For the past 50 years Adel has been home to a little ice cream shop next to the bike trail. Generations of Iowans have stepped in the doors of this iconic store, creating traditions and lifelong memories.

This month we spoke with Billy Nuzum about the joys of continuing this Adel tradition.

You'll notice Billy's Ice Cream Store along Nile Kinnick Drive by its bright green paint and red picnic benches.

Formerly known as Dairy Stripe, this Adel business has been serving up ice cream treats and concessions to children young and old for nearly 50 years.

In 2015, new owners Billy and Bob Nuzum of Johnston purchased the store and reinvigorated Adel's love of ice cream.

Billy's charm and friendly nature is a nostalgic greeting that welcomes customers to relax and enjoy our small town.

"We've been in concessions for quite a long time. We've operated concessions at the Camp Dodge swimming pool, and the two West Des Moines swimming pools. We have always enjoyed doing that- we wanted to get out of the office routine and I've always been a people person. I love to be around people and this mixture was the perfect storm!"

Billys Ice Cream Store - Adel Iowa
"The most exciting thing is to have people come in and enjoy the picnic tables. Kids can ride their bikes up here and know its a safe place where they can sit and visit with their friends.

We have adults and people from out of town who say 'I used to come in when I was a kid', and that's just fun. Its the reconnection I'm excited about. I've missed everyone during the winter so come back and see me!"

Billy's Ice Cream Store quickly gained popularity last season due to easy access from the bike trail and a wide range of flavors to please any palette.

The shop has been a favorite stop along the Raccoon River Valley Trail with its large parking lot and shade. Cyclists fondly remember that years ago RRVT Association founders Chuck and Carla Offenburger first met at the ice cream shop. The local stop was so important to them that they married in the parking lot and served ice cream at the reception.

"We like to cater to the bikers. I put out signs along the bike trail to let people know how to find us. We fill their water bottles and like being able to offer a space to sit in the shade or get away from the rain."

"I buy all my product from Anderson Erickson- I think its the best. I had a lot of compliments on my ice cream last year that it tastes homemade. I have two soft serve ice cream machines- these are my babies- and I take really good care of them.

I run Vanilla, Chocolate, and Lemon all the time. Then I have one flavor to play with. Soft serve is where all the malts, shakes, banana splits, and cones come from."

"Up front in the case I keep hard-pack ice cream in 3 gallon tubs. That's a lot of fun- especially with the little kids who can look and point and say 'I want that one!" I keep flavors for the kids like Cotton Candy and Birthday Party, and the rest I switch around with interesting flavors like Amaretto Cherry. I want to be able to offer something for everybody."

Billys Ice Cream Store - Adel Iowa
Billy's Ice Cream Store will open for the season Friday April 1st, 2016. Billy is excited to offer a few new menu items such as hot coffee and espresso.

Each weekday Billy's will offer a light lunch option from 11-2 pm. This daily special is a sandwich paired with a large soda for an affordable price.

She has also hinted that she may add a new line of novelty treats, snacks, and unique desserts such as Caramel Apple Slices as the season progresses.

Billy & Bob share the dream to expand the business even further. This year the ice cream store will be participating in the Sweet Corn Festival parade and the Bacoon Ride.

The couple hopes that with the right products and loyal customers, Billy's Ice Cream Store could be open year round someday. For now, the shop is open Monday-Saturday 11 am - 9 pm, and Sundays from 1-9 pm.

Billy loves Adel and thinks very highly of the community members that make the town special.

"Adel has a lot of new growth happening. A lot of them are people coming out of Des Moines looking for the small town feel, the smaller school system and that sense of community. Its a fantastic community- I gained so much respect working at Fareway during Christmas time, especially the way the community reached out to each other. They just take care of each other. We saw so many different act of kindness; the food pantry, the churches that are active, just that whole community effort to take care of each other. I can't think of a thing Adel could do better than what they are doing now."

Monthly Recipe DiscoverAdel
Recipe of the Month -
Spring Flavors Grilled Pizza

My wife comes from a long line of proud Vikings, firebugs, or you may call them pyromaniacs. We say this in jest, as I'm pretty sure none of them have set anything on fire outside a regulation fire pit or grill.

Every summer the cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles get together at the favorite campsite loaded up with enough fire wood to send an entire viking armada to Valhalla.

The flames lick the sky into the wee hours as we trade stories and enjoy the time together. A successful fire must use the entire supply of wood.

The family campground started chaining the picnic tables down a few years back, but we've been assured it has nothing to do with us.

So what does this have to do with pizza? Very little, but the flames from the grill got me thinking about a camp fire...

Ingredients:
Homemade Pizza Crust
Italian Sausage medallions
Garlic, minced
Asparagus, quartered
Mushrooms, quartered
Red Onion, thin slices
3 T Parmesan Cheese
4-6 T Olive Oil
Fresh Mozzarella Cheese, sliced
Fresh Lemon
Salt & Pepper

Prepare a homemade pizza crust. We use the recipe from MarthaStewart.com. (Alternative, purchased flatbread such as Nan's will work, just skip the oven part.)

Directions:
Heat your oven to 425 and par bake the plain crust (80% cooked) for 5-8 minutes on a pizza stone.

Do not over cook the crust. Let rest 5 minutes before topping crust. Do not grill pizza stone.

In a frypan cook the Italian Sausage medallions. Line a plate with paper towels and set aside to drain excess grease.

Kitchen Tip: Hate burnt vegetables on pizza? In a small bowl mix 1 T each Salt and Sugar with 1/2 cup of water.

Stir to combine. Cut up Asparagus, Mushrooms and Red Onion, toss with Salt mixture.
Allow to set for 5-10 minutes. Drain and pat dry before adding to pizza. The sugar and salt start to break down the molecular structure resulting in softer, flavorful vegetables without the burnt edges or strong raw flavor.

Kitchen Tip: Place the crust on a pizza paddle before topping. This will make it easier to transport the pizza to the grill and remove it once cooked.

Top the pizza. Brush top of crust with Olive Oil. Sprinkle with a dash of Salt, Pepper and Parmesan Cheese. Add Garlic, Italian Sausage medallions, Asparagus, Mushrooms and Red Onion.

Kitchen Tip: Slice Fresh Mozzarella into large medallions and position on the crust prior to other toppings for traditional Margarita-style pizza.

Cut slices into quarters and add as the last topping to create a cheesier American-style pizza.

Heat Grill to 450-500 degrees. (Add a hickory chip or two if looking for a smoky flavor.)

Place pizza on grill and cook for 5-8 minutes or until cheese is browned slightly.

Garnish with a squeeze of Lemon, drizzle of Olive Oil, and dash of Salt and Pepper.

Enjoy!

I have been stuck in Scotland for the past two weeks, held in a small cell without sunlight for ransom.

I informed my captors that I am but a humble writer with little to my name but this orange parka and my endless charm. They insisted I reach out to my readers in earnest so that I may return home.

My kidnappers made the following list of demands. I was forced to write the list exactly as they spoke it to ensure I am not attempting to get a secret message to you, my friend, the reader.
  1. $100,000 Uzbekistani Som.
  2. 1 pair of fitted Icelandic woolen-knit driving glove, knitted as a single piece, shaped and darted on the hand over the palm of a man named Sruli in Reykjavik.
  3. Proof of plantation of 2 Rainbow Eucalyptus trees.
  4. 1 airline ticket from Barra Airport to Des Moines, first class.
  5. 12 cases warm Harviestoun Ola Dubh
