Dear Friend,
It's been a busy time here at the office! We've been hustling to get the newsletter finished and report on all of the activities here in Adel. Each month seems to get bigger and our mailing list keeps growing. Thank you for such a great reception!
We'd like to make a special request on behalf of the good folks at Adel HomeCare Services Inc., as they ask for volunteers. A donation of time would go a long way to help them further their cause of caring.
Amongst the hustle, we welcome two new businesses to Adel, Route 169 Burgers & BBQ and Edge Computing & Networking.
This month we have April Specials from Adel Winterset TV & Appliance, news from River Valley Golf Course, The Zombie Apocalypse, A Taste of Spring with Brick St. BBQ, the latest events from Around Town, news and events from the Adel Public Library, a Recipe from Home, and much more!
Have a great April and Easter. We look forward to seeing you in Adel this month! Enjoy!
ChrisAs a supporter of Adel you are receiving the DiscoverAdel.Com monthly newsletter. |
Steve Collins - Route 169 Burger & BBQ
|
We would like to welcome Route 169 Burgers & BBQ to Adel.
| L-R: Steve Collins, Lisa Collins, Dana Collins, Doug Collins |
Brothers Steve and Doug Collins and wives Lisa and Dana are in the last days of putting the final touches on their new restaurant Route 169 Burgers & BBQ.
We got a chance to talk with Steve Collins about his family's new restaurant.
Located at the corner of Highway 169 (Kinnick Dr.) and Court St. in the former Breadeaux building. They've been busy renovating the building with a racing theme and a focus on the Adel community.
Steve and Lisa have lived in Adel for 18 years. He is an Area Manager for Performance Foods and he is using his background of opening restaurants.
When the building became available, Steve contacted his brother Doug, who was living in Texas, that he needed to come to Adel and that they needed to open a restaurant together.
As we were talking people stuck their heads in to see how the construction was going. Lisa commented that "We've had a fantastic response from folks".
As a former Adel Boy Scout leader and coach, Steve wants the restaurant to be kid friendly and a good experience for all.
There are plans for a $20.00 punch card that kids can use for 5 meals. Each meal will consist of a 169 Burger, chips and a pop or shake.
The new restaurant will serve Mexican, Loose meat sandwiches, and BBQ with weekend specials of Prime Rib, Smoked Seafood as in season, and BBQ. The smoker will use Templeton rye whiskey barrel wood to season the BBQ.
There will be tortilla chips and homemade salsa served with the dinners.
When asked about the menu, Steve's response was to smile and say "No fried foods. We want it be as healthy as possible and it will still taste good. We'll have a few vegetarian offerings and we're looking to add organic (meals) down the road".
Doug hinted that there is secret rub for the smoker and that they will offer a signature BBQ sauce.
They are planning to offer meals starting in the $5-$6 range and up with Free lunch delivery to the downtown square area.
With two big screen televisions, pinewood derby display, local memorabilia and a definite racing theme of red, white, and black, the cafe will be a great place to stop at on the way out to the fairground races this summer.
Please watch for updates on the DiscoverAdel daily site as they get closer to opening the doors around April 14th.

Recipe of the Month
| | Lefse
We had been married about two weeks when Lori said she was hungry for Lefse.
I had no idea what Left-Sa was, but smiled and said "Ok".
I gathered it was a sweet treat of some sort, but questioned that when she got out the potatoes.
To my surprise she turned mashed potatoes into a flat bread that she grilled, buttered and dipped in sugar.
They were quite tasty!
Although this is the long version, we've made it with extra mashed potatoes as well, skip the butter, salt, and cream as it's already there.
Lefse
Ingredients
6 c. Riced Potatoes.
2 C. Flour
1 T. Kosher Salt
2 T. Sugar
1/4 C. Butter
1/2 C. Heavy Whipping Cream
Directions
1. Peel and boil the potatoes until done.
2. Drain potatoes, and "rice" them, mashing them works also.
3. Slice butter, add to potatoes, stir.
4. Set aside to cool.
5. Cover and chill in fridge overnight.
6. Take out of fridge and crumble the potatoes.
7. Add the whipping cream, salt, sugar and flour.
8. Stir until crumble stage.
Kneed 10-12 times until smooth.
9. Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to make round patties.
10. Set patties on cookie sheet to rest.
11. Lightly flour pastry board.
12. Use rolling pin to roll out 1/4 inch thin sheets.
13. Alternate rolling direction to keep round shape.
14. Use spatula to transfer to slightly greased grill.
15. Cook 30 - 45 seconds on first side, dough will bubble when ready to flip.
16. Repeat for second side.
Transfer leafs to a towel and cover.
17. Repeat steps for remaining dough.
Allow to cool. Butter the leafs, roll em up and dip them in sugar.
Enjoy! |
