Dear Friend,
March is proving to be a great month. The boys are going to State and St. Patrick's day is nearly here. The Irish in me is looking forward to a great meal on the 17th.
Speaking of heritage, our Featured Story surrounds an interesting photo of Adel submitted by Leonard Fox Lillskau whose family has lived in the Adel area for over a hundred years.
This month we have news from John Standley at Adel Auto Parts, Reich & Loynachan Insurance, River Golf Course, Dallas County Extension, GraceJuliet Specials, Adel HomeCare Services Inc., the latest events from Around Town, news and events from the Adel Public Library, a Recipe from Home, and much more!
Have a great March and be sure to stop out to Adel this month, we're looking forward to seeing you! Enjoy!

Leny Fox Lillskau - Mystery Photo
| I was gifted with some photos from Leny Fox Lillskau who's family has lived in the Adel area predating the brick streets.
Leny used to do radio as Leny Fox out of Perry, where he now resides.
| Leny Fox Lillskau |
Leny is a great visit. We share a love of Batman and comics. In talking about comics we somehow discovered that he went to Buena Vista with a former classmate I once played football with.
That led to the discovery that we lived within a stone throws a couple of time in the past years.
He wanted to know if I was interested in some old family photos he had, one in particular was of a crew of men who helped lay the brick streets in Adel.
I jumped at the chance. Old photos can be studied for years, revealing more information than an archeological dig. They also raise questions.
The photo below shows 21 men and a boy. Leny's Great Grand Father is in charge of the wagon and his grandfather is standing to the left of the cart.
The wagon is drawn by a horse and a cow, not something I've seen before.
Adel Brick Street Crew I'm familiar with teams of oxen. They worked well beyond the work life of a horse, were more resilient to disease, and less expensive.
They could also be sold for their initial cost to the butcher at end of life. They were difficult to shoe as they couldn't stand on three legs like a horse and required two shoes as opposed to one on a horse.
Oxen were always in teams and the teams were partnered for life. You either had a team of horses or of oxen, no one mentioned mixing them.
Now all of that is about an "ox", but the picture shows a horse and cow?
Was this a typical pairing in the past? I assume there was some advantage, or perhaps this was an ingenious solution to a problem of the moment.
The men and boy posing for the picture are gone now. The questions as to who they were is an open one.
I'd welcome any information you might be able to provide. If you have insights into the team, that would be appreciated also.
As I travel Adel's streets I have to wonder which bricks were laid by these men and others. Oh, and how many trips did that unique team have to make.
Our thanks to Leny for the mystery captured that photgraph.
You can contact Leny at his Facebook page.

Heart Wisdom Class in Adel
|
When you think of your heart in your chest, it is the size of your hand squeezed into a fist. When you think of your heart "on stress" it is the tension of your hand squeezed into a fist. Continue that tension indefinitely and you have the many physical problems of stress. Come learn to listen more deeply to your heart's wisdom as it communicates with you about your life. Beginning with the attitude-of-gratitude, we will share a variety of different ways to relax and open your heart - for your physical health and your emotional/spiritual health. Some basic physiology of stress (what your body does and how that can lead to physical and emotional symptoms) is included to bring a non-judgmental understanding about your life, to put you more in control of your own health. In small groups, we will experience heart-opening approaches. You will have one week to practice these methods at home and then come back to fine tune them to fit your particular needs so they will be even more effective. March 24 & 31, 9:30 - 11:30 am at Healing Therapies,118 S.9th Street, Adel. Taught by MaryLea Holcomb(Healing Therapies, Adel) Cost: $30 -Class size is limited so please preregister. Is it Time to Pass it Forward? Adel HomeCare Services, Inc.
|
Do you believe in helping at the local level right here in Dallas County?
Are you able to step up and help once in a while when there's a need presented to you?
Adel's HomeCare Services, Inc. believes in providing personalized and "community based" services focusing on independence, dignity, and a higher quality of life for the people of Dallas County, which includes the elderly and the challenged.
We are in need today. We are in need of some Volunteers to deliver Meals On Wheels in the Adel area. We are in need of cash donations for the "community based" services we provide, that keep our county residents in their own homes as opposed to nursing homes and other facilities.
If your church or business is able to step up and help, please let us know.
If you and your family can step up and help, please contact HomeCare, 515-993-4531, any time if you're able to "pass it forward."

Recipe of the Month
| | Irish Soda Bread
Saint Paddy's Day is a big event in my house.
It ranks up there with Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas for a great meal.
I try and get a nice selection of Irish cheeses. The stouter the better.
We fix corned beef, potatoes, carrots, kale, and it's the one time of the year I'm allowed to fixed fried cabbage and bacon in the house.
No feast is complete with out a good hearty bread to round out the meal.
This soda bread recipe does just that.
I'm not one for the raisins so I skip them, but if you're a traditionalist, add them in.
Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
4 Cups All-Purpose Flour
3 T. Sugar
1 tsp. Salt
3/4 tsp. Baking Soda
3 tsp. Baking Powder
6 T Cold Butter
1 T Caraway Seeds
2 Beaten Eggs
1 1/2 Cups Buttermilk
1 Cups Raisins (Optional)
Directions
1. Combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and baking powder in a large bowl.
2. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Add in caraway seeds and raisins if you're so inclined.
4. Set aside a small amount of the beaten egg.
5. Combine the buttermilk, remaining eggs and stir into crumb mixture until flour is moistened .
6. Turn onto a well-floured surface; knead about 10 times. Shape into a ball.
7. Place in a greased 9-in. round baking pan. Cut a 4" x 1/4" deep slice in the center of the ball.
8. Brush the top with set aside egg.
9. Bake at 350 degrees for 80 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
10. Cover loosely with foil for the last 20 minutes if top starts to brown too fast.
Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack to cool.
Serve at the meal with a nice "Guiness" and raise a toast to St. Patrick.
Enjoy! |
