Vol. 76 February 2015
Dear Friend of Adel,

Ah, it's February, the time of Ground Hog's Day (my grandmother Cookie's birthday) the Big Game, Valentine's Day, Mardis Gras and Lent. Not to mention the "longest shortest" month of the year. As I write this the weather forecast keeps shifting but the promise of more winter and lousy driving is on the horizon.

Speaking of dreading driving, it's fitting that this month we talked with Alex James of HIRTA, from of the Homecare Services of Dallas County offices in Adel.

Terry is back with another interesting take on a Holiday. Now I've given up on verifying Terry's "facts", but I always enjoy the unique perspective.

Breaking News! Al Dente Toffee of Adel, took First place Saturday at BaconFest! Congratulations to John and his team! I need to get more samples before they're all gone. You should too, they're very good!

So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

Chris

HIRTA - Adel Iowa
Alex James of Hirta

The Friendly Face of Public Transportation: Alex James and HIRTA

This month we offer a profile with Alex James of Homecare Services, Inc. of Dallas County 's public transportation division in Adel.

Lifelong resident of Adel, Alex James is well known around town. You may know him as a part time clerk at the Adel Public Library, or as the son of Dan and Paula James.

Most days, Alex is known as Customer Service Representative I, or dispatcher, for Homecare Services, Inc. of Dallas County 's Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency, or HIRTA.

Alex has been with HIRTA for 6 years and continues to love his job helping coordinate drivers, buses, and passengers. HIRTA is a hybrid of traditional taxi services and a metropolitan bus line. With 24 hours or more advanced notice, Alex and Customer Service Representative II Cheryl, who acts as scheduler, will help arrange your ride in and around Dallas County and the Des Moines metro.

There are many misconceptions about HIRTA that Alex patiently helps customers understand each day with his genuine care for others.

HomeCare Services Inc of Dallas County First, it is important to note that HIRTA is public transportation, which means anyone can ride the bus! In Dallas County the buses log over 200,000 miles per year. From preschool kids that need a ride to daycare, rides to and from the doctor's office, the days your car is in the shop, to grandparents looking for a day or shopping, HIRTA buses are equip for all.

Next, remember that HIRTA is not a free service, though for qualified passengers, some destinations may be listed at a free will donation level or riders may be approved for government assistance.

Keep in mind that a trip or ride is a one-way ticket; once you get off the bus; you would be charged for any additional stops and the return trip home.

As a not-for-profit 501c(3) organization, grants are available that Head Coordinator Renee Sherman pursues for further assistance.

There are also discounted rates for youngsters and senior citizens, and scheduled discount days. If you're looking for fun, ride the bus to and from Prairie Meadows for the buffet and gambling. Or take advantage of Des Moines shopping days every other Thursday when the bus will drive you to many destinations and home for a significant savings over a regular trip around the metro.

There are 10 buses shared between Adel and Perry to serve all of Dallas County. Each driver has a CB radio and GPS system with texting capabilities to keep in communication with the base office located in the Homecare Services building in Adel at the corner of Main and 1st streets. Throughout the day Alex coordinates with drivers to facilitate scheduled pick-ups, changes, review procedures, and note maintenance needs.

Please note that HIRTA is just one division of Homecare Services, Inc. of Dallas County. If you need assistance with regards to personal care, organization, respite care, or more, contact Deb Anderson, LBSW and Homecare Aide Coordinator.

HIRTA - Adel Iowa
Alex and Renee of Homecare Services

Most importantly, keep in mind that of Homecare Services, Inc. of Dallas County and HIRTA are caring organizations.

If you need a ride with less than 24 hour notice, give Alex a call and he will do all he can.

If you need a ride but have limited income, talk to Renee to find out about a payment plan.

Or, if you'd like to plan field trips a few weeks in advance (18 people or less) consider a HIRTA bus and talk to Cheryl.

As long as the ride starts or stops in Dallas County, Alex and the HIRTA team are here to help and will do what they can to secure your ride. This is really a public transportation system for everyone, serviced with great Iowa-style customer service.

Alex James may have many titles, but each demonstrates his genuine love for Adel and Dallas County, making him a shining example of Adel character and spirit. He is happy to say he plans to remain an Adel resident and is proud to call Adel home.

BAdel Good Samaritan Food Pantry Update
Adel Good Samaritan Food Pantry The Good Samaritan Food Pantry routinely purchases food from the Iowa Food Bank.

In recent weeks, the amount and variety of food at the Iowa Food Bank is quite limited. Our own food pantry has had limitations as a result.

If you find you can provide any of the following, it would be greatly appreciated!

Some things we are in need of cereal, toilet paper, cake mixes, pasta, rice, peanut butter, canned meats, sugar, flour peaches and syrup and will always accept other items and cash.

We are so very grateful for all that the churches do for us including food, volunteers and prayers. We have the best pantry in the area and it's because we have so much support from our churches and community.

We can not say "Thank You" enough for thinking of us.

Local Food Growers to Meet Feb. 12th
ISU Ext Food Growers The February Growing Food and Profit group will be Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1204 13th Street, in Dallas Center. (In case of bad weather, the meeting will be moved to February 13.)

Anyone interested in growing or eating locally grown food is welcome to attend! Bring a potluck dish to share and your own table service. Coffee will be provided.

The potluck meal will be followed by a program presented by Liz Kolbe,

Horticultural Coordinator, Practical Farmers of Iowa: and Rick and Stacy Hartmann, Small Potatoes Farm near Minburn.

Kolbe collected financial data from eleven Iowa vegetable farms in 2014. She has grouped and summarized her findings and will share some insight as to the profitability and related characteristics of these farms.

The Hartmanns completed their 10th growing season as a certified organic vegetable farm in 2014. They have been able to create a stable, well-recognized farm allowing them to meet their financial and lifestyle goals. They will share some of the key decisions, changes and challenges they faced during their first ten years that they feel would be helpful in the success of other beginning or seasoned farm businesses.

Great Beginnings for Families Starting Feb. 3rd
Great-Beginnings-for-Families Trying to communicate or reason with a little one whose language and behavioral skills aren't yet developed can cause stress for both child and parent, presenting a sometimes frustrating yet unique set of challenges.

Caring for young requires an intense learning curve bundled with love and patience, and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach's Great Beginnings for Families can support parents who wish to build a solid foundation for their child's early development.

A five-week skills building program for parents of infants through preschoolers, Great Beginnings can help mothers and fathers learn how to effectively administer positive discipline and guidance while helping their young cope with anger and conflict. Encouraging learning through play and understanding the key principles of child development is also a core part of this workshop series.

"This class was enlightening and very beneficial to me," shared one father. "Being a good parent is what I have to do for the rest of my life. Quite frankly, no other job or task is more important. This class encouraged me to take a look at myself and evaluate the skills I have and to also learn new skills to help me be the dad I have to be for my kids."

Great Beginnings for Families will take place Tuesdays, Feb. 3 - March 10 (no class on March 3) from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at Waukee's Walnut Hills Elementary School.

Registration is $10 and can be completed through Waukee Community Ed at www.waukeeschools.org/commed or (515) 987-2761. For more information on the program, contact Extension Educator Lisa Mickelson at (515) 993-4281 or lmickel@iastate.edu.

Recipe of the Month
DDiscover Chef
Red Recipe

With Valentine's Day around the corner, I am reminded of all the red recipes my family has made over the years.

My sister-in-law used to make red velvet cake from scratch.

She had a 1-gallon jug of red food dye that lasted her the better part of a decade.

This was before its recent resurgence in popularity.

At that time red velvet cake was a delicacy few made, and fewer made well, that we looked forward to.

There was the play dough we made for the girls using Kool-Aid, flour, and salt.

Their pale palms along with the kitchen table would turn a bright pink for several days.

The sweet smell of artificial cherry has never been the same.

My favorite recipe was for a brick red loaf of bread that I've always called "Fireman Bread".

To this day, no one has the original recipe and I have never been able to find a reasonable proximity. I have a cloudy memory of eating the bread several times, though no one remembers baking it either.

It's been 30 years since I've had it, but I remember it as a dense multi grain bread with a redish orange coloring similar to pumpkin bread.

The flavor is a mix of grains, seasoning, with a hint of black pepper.

If any of our readers know a recipe for this phantom red bread, please send me an email to info@discoveradel.com or complete the contact us form. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

And now for a red recipe that is completely different, my wife's favorite dish, a vibrant red in honor of Valentine's Day.

Ash Wednesday Worship Service - Lent Begins  Feb. 18th
Ash Wednesday 2015

Join the Adel United Methodist Church as the Lenten season begins.

Lent may not be the longest season in the church year but it is one of the most important seasons of the year.

It is a time for spiritual preparation through repentance and growth in faith for Easter.

It is the time of the church year when the passion and death of the Savior come into focus.

It begins with repentance and reflection on Ash Wednesday, and ends in the depth of sorrow and tragedy on Good Friday.

The name of the season, Lent, means the lengthening of the days as spring appears.

Ash Wednesday is February 18th and our service will be on that Wed. at 7:00 p.m.

It will include the Imposition of Ashes on forehead or hand. Wednesday meal will not happen as usual.

We look forward to seeing you.

Terry Traveller - Groundhog's Day!
Groundhog Day

Dear fellow traveler ~

February is home to my 7th favorite holiday, Groundhog's Day, and is amongst the best of my handwritten and Xeroxed manuscript, "The Lost Tales of American Tradition".

As many of you will find in my book, I presuppose t'was the mayor in 1887 who devised the festival as a promotional gimmick to increase tourism to make Punxsutawney, Philadelphia as popular as Aspen, Colorado and soon became the best promotional gimmick since uniform bread pans.

So the story goes, it was late one night when the mayor heard a scratching at the door. Thinking he had forgotten the pet cat on the porch, the ole mayor opened the backdoor and scooped up what he believed to be his notoriously large and significantly furry cat.

T'was not indeed.

In that instance the groundhog froze. The mayor froze. Their eyes met and both gave a frightful screech!

Dropping the groundhog to the floor, it ran out of the house leaving behind a very bewildered public official. And thus the phrase "keep the porch light on" was born.

The nature behind the reasoning of a groundhog and its shadow as a verified meteorological devise has been lost to the sands in the hourglass and the constructs of the "interweb".

The tradition is simple- roust a Groundhog from its home and see its shadow it does, we have 6 more weeks of winter upon us.

If he doesn't, we still have 6 weeks left of winter according to the calendar but the weather could be a balmy 48 degrees!

In Iowa, that's cause enough for my Birkenstocks, black socks, and short shorts.

So this February 2nd, as you listen to traditional Groundhog's Day Polka music, watch the beloved movie again and again, and sip on some mulled wine in the hot tub, remember fondly the reason for the celebration, and give your cat a hug.
