When our second daughter was 6 we enrolled her in tumbling. She would walk through the living room and do two cartwheels and continue on as if nothing had happened. I've often attributed her successes to the confidence she gained while tumbling. Today she's in her mid-twenties with a little one of her own who seems destined to be an acrobat also.
This month we had the honor of talking with her tumbling coach, Lori (Erickson) Rickert and Sue Dunsmoor from Adel Tumbling & Dance Club.
In addition, we have the latest events from Around Town, news and events from the Adel Public Library, a Recipe from Home, and much more!
Have a great January, be sure to stop out to Adel this month, we're looking forward to seeing you!

Adel Tumbling & Dance Club
Located at 211 S 7th St, Adel Tumbling & Dance Club teaches Tumbling, Tap, Ballet: Lyrical/Modern, Jazz: Hip Hop, Pre-Pointe, Pointe, and Competitive Dance.
Sue Dunsmoor & Lori Rickert
It is owned by Lori (Erickson) Rickert, who has been teaching tumbling in Adel for 35 years.
She has three grown children Jeni, Dani, and Justin, her middle daughter is married and in medical school.
Lori started tumbling at the age of 5 and was a member of the Des Moines Gymnastic Club in High School.
While in school she assisted with coaching students, her High School coach recommended that she teach in Ankeny.
While teaching and working for an Insurance Agency in Ankeny, Lori received a call from Kathy Haldamen asking if she would come and teach 2 full classes in Adel on Saturdays.
Lori working with a student
Each class had six students. From there the classes quickly grew and turned into a full-time business. Today the studio is used every day of the week.
Over the years, many of her assistants have been life long students.
Six years ago the opportunity to buy Kathy's School of Dance came up and she purchased it.
Sue setting up placements
Sue Dunsmoor, who manages the Dance side of the studio, was working at Kathy's School of Dance at the time of the purchase.
Sue started dancing at three in a neighbor's basement in Adel. She continued through school and taught dance while in college.
In 1994 she was instructing at Westside Dance in Des Moines when it moved to Waukee. In 1999 her neighbor talked her into teaching in Adel.
A native of Adel, she lives in the same house she grew up in. She has a son Scott and her daughter Tonya assists as an instructor. Sue ensures a family friendly program.
Together Lori and Sue make a great team that focuses on the well being of their students.
One of Lori's cornerstones of the Adel Tumbling & Dance Club is to "Offer a positive program for families in tumbling and dance."
The club participates locally in the parades, exhibitions, Holiday performances at Nursing Homes and at the Relay for Life.
Tumbling students have an annual Tumbling Meet and during the summer they compete at the Iowa State Fair.
Dance students participate in 2 dance recitals, and Nationals throughout the year.
Over the years Lori has seen the level of tumbling excel with students starting younger.
When asked if boys ever participate, Lori responded with a smile, "We are popular with boys also. The classes for the boys remain masculine and they gain great balance and strength. We have former students who have gone on to be great wrestlers".

Strengthening Families for Parents & Youth
Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 years, offered through Iowa State University Extension
Strengthening Families is designed to help families build strong relationships. Parents/Caregivers learn to use love and limits in guiding their youth, in family communication and in problem-solving.

The youth session involves role-playing, interaction, fun activities & games. Then during the last hour the families come together to practice skills, work on projects, and do fun activities.

Recipe of the Month
Red Beans and Rice
This recipe is a family tradition for starting off the New Year.
I like red beans and rice almost as much as BBQ.
Many times they're served in the same location.
Over the years we've experimented with various combinations until we came up with the following recipe.
For several years I took it as a pot-luck dish to family reunions.
Last summer I opted to bring a vegetable based dish.
There are some things you just can't apologize enough for.
I've since promised to resume the red beans and rice in all future events.
I tend to double or triple the recipe depending on the occasion and crowd.
2 Cups Red Pinto Beans
2 Chopped Onions
1 Chopped Red Onion
2 Cloves Minced Garlic
1/8 tsp. Salt
1 T. Pepper
1 T. Oregano
1 T. Thyme
2 T. Paprika
1 Bay Leaf
1/8 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
1 Meaty Ham Bone
1lb. Andouille Sausage
2lb. White Rice
1. Wash beans, soak overnight. Drain well.
2. In a large pot, combine beans, onions, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, paprika, bay leaf, cayenne pepper and ham bone. Add the ham drippings if you have them. Cover with cold water. (About 9 cups)
3. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer 1 hour.
4. Remove ham bone with tongs. With a fork pull remaining meat off into pot. Add sliced sausage and rice, cook covered for 25 minutes.
5. Shut off and let stand covered for 15 minutes.
Cornbread and Hot Sauce.
