Vol. 15 January 2010

Dear Friend,

As a loyal supporter of Adel you are receiving the
DiscoverAdel.Com monthly newsletter.
If you are having trouble viewing this document or it's images, you can view the Newsletter at the DiscoverAdel.com site.

Welcome to 2010! Although we don't "yet" have the flying cars promised to us as kids, we live in an amazing time. One that allows us to send our newsletter across the country and to two folks overseas. Who knew that 5th grade typing class would be this important?

This month we have an interview with Trey and Danielle Eason of Eason Portrait Gallery, information on the proposed Street Project, a recipe from home, and great news from around town.

Here's hoping that the New Year and the future ahead is good to all!

Enjoy!

Chris

SpotlightTrey & Danielle - Eason Portrait Gallery
Eason Portrait Gallery Adel Iowa

When DiscoverAdel interviewed Trey and Danielle Eason of Eason Portrait Gallery, we were impressed by the detail of the gallery.

It looks very professional and upscale. From the art gallery settings to the professional setup of the studio. The quality of images on the wall are captivating, one could spend an afternoon just enjoying the photos.

Normally we run our photos, but they pale in comparison to the quality of Trey's work. Trey and Danielle generously provided a small sample of their work that we're showcasing here.

Except for the first photo, the rest are from the Eason portfolio, enjoy!

What is a brief history of Eason Portrait Gallery in Adel?
Eason Portrait Gallery opened February 1, 2007. The portrait photography studio and boutique is located just off the square at 911 Court Street, Suite 1 in the old Ben Franklin craft store.

What can you tell us about yourselves?
Trey is originally from Waukee and has many family members in the area. Danielle is from Burlington, IA. "We met while attending Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo. We were both enrolled in the Professional Photography program."

Trey became interested in photography while taking a class in high school. His aunt, Deb has also encouraged and helped him along the way. Danielle got her start in photography while job shadowing a family friend who owned a popular studio in Burlington. This lead them both to Hawkeye Community College to become professionals.

Trey and Danielle are a husband/wife team. Trey does the majority of the photography. Danielle helps out at wedding's. Danielle enjoys interacting with their clients on a daily basis. She answers phone calls, hosts consultation and order appointments, designs layouts and edits all of the photos.

Trey graduated in 2004 and began working as a photojournalist for the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier newspaper. Danielle graduated in 2005. The couple then relocated to Waukee.

What is your philosophy on photography?
Eason Portrait Gallery focuses on capturing the special moments of life. Trey's training as a photojournalist helps him capture the special relationships and personalities of his subjects.

"Photography is truly an art to us. While we were first trained on film, we currently photograph digitally. Digital photography allows us quick turn around time and unlimited artistic capabilities for our clients."

What occasions do you focus on your photography business?
Eason Portrait Gallery specializes in senior graduation portraits, family, children, wedding and event photography.

Do you offer that sets you apart from other photographers?
"We believe we offer our clients a unique experience when they choose our studio. We strive to become a person's photographer for life. We want to photograph their baby, senior, wedding and family portraits."

What special products and services do you offer?
"We have special family, wedding and children's packages available. Our most popular is the Baby Steps Program. Baby comes in for a session at 3, 6, 9 & 12 months. You receive a complimentary print from each session.

At the end of their first year we custom design a book including portraits from all of the sessions. We also offer significant discounts on our senior session in the spring and summer.

There is information on our website, www.EasonPortraitGallery.com about all of these special packages."

What do you like photographing in your spare time?
"Trey enjoys photographing nature and landscapes. We also enjoy photographing our 19 month old boy, Perry."

What are your favorite photos to take?
"We enjoy each session. Each subject is another contact and a different life story. We enjoy getting to know our clients. In getting to know them, it allows them to be more comfortable in front of the camera."

Do you offer post production services?
Eason Portrait Gallery focuses on being a boutique photography studio. "We offer many post production products. We have Gina Alexander designer photo handbags, custom designed greeting cards and announcements, handmade jewelry, fine artwork, framing and photo restoration."

Do you have any tips/suggestions for those looking to use your service?
"We encourage everyone to visit our website to view samples of our work. All sessions are by appointment. We also stress the importance of a pre-session consultation. This is a valuable opportunity for us to get to meet you, determine your photography and product needs and discuss clothing recommendations."

How are you with the community? Do you sponsor any charitable events/groups?
"Eason Portrait Gallery donates to many organizations and schools. We donate to the Adel After Prom committee and Relay for Life.

This past year we were asked to donate to a wonderful organization called Project Dream Space. We donated our time, photography services and prints to a wonderful family in the area that had suffered a lost. It was heartwarming to see their response to the photos.

We are also involved with our former college, Hawkeye Community College. This past year we opened our doors to 33 graduating photographers.

We were able to speak to them about starting a business at a young age, marketing and production. We were also honored when the college asked us to judge graduating students year end portfolios. We were honored to be among our fellow photographers who we look up to. We had a great time doing that!

We also attend the yearly Professional Photographer of Iowa convention. This is an opportunity for us to hear many successful photographers speak about the upcoming trends, latest products and ideas.

We always come away from that recharged and ready to try new ideas the next year."

Do you have any upcoming events?
"Graduating class of 2011, in the spring we start offering excellent discounts on our senior sessions! We also send out mailers starting in the early spring for senior sessions! Our specials for families and children are listed on our website."

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about yourself or the company?
Although Trey and Danielle are young, they are professionally trained and have worked for popular studios in the past. They also had the opportunity to live and work in Europe as photographers on US Military bases.

"We chose to locate our studio in Adel because of the small-town charm and friendly people. We would like to say thank you to our past clients for allowing us to capture their special moments in their lives.

We would also like to invite everyone to stop by our studio or visit our website if you have any photography or gift needs. We look forward to meeting you and thank you for your business!"

Adel Streetscape Planning
Adel Iowa StreetScape

The City of Adel recently held a public meeting to review design concepts for the upcoming Brick Street Project. In addition to the renovation and repair of the historic brick streets, this project will include sidewalks in the downtown area. As planning continues the Adel Partners Design Committee and Adel Historic Preservation Commission will be providing input regarding the various options, including the possibility of adding brick elements to sidewalks within the downtown historic district.

The streetscape design concept includes several options such as updating street markers, adding benches, and landscaping around the Square. Public feedback, preferences, and pricing will be reviewed by the City Council as final design decisions are made later this winter.

Adel residents are welcome to review the plans being considered and complete the Streetscape Survey by visiting City Hall or on the City of Adel website.

The 1st phase of the Brick Street Project will include the courthouse square and downtown business district. Court Street from 7th to 9th, Main Street from 7th to 10th and 9th Street from Court to Prairie will be impacted by the 2010 work plan.

The Adel Partners are excited that the timing of the 1st phase will coordinate with the National Historic Places Designation. The Designation has been approved by the state of Iowa and is now in the hands of the Federal Department of the Interior.

Adel Historic Preservation Commission hopes to announce by spring that Adel's Public Square Historic District will be named to the National Registry of Historic Places. Adel Historic Preservation Commission and Adel Partners Design Committee will be meeting with representatives from McClure Engineering and the City next week to review the design guidelines developed by the Historic Preservation Commission.

The group will discuss how the proposed lighting, landscaping, street marker and bench options might fit the historic character of the downtown area.

As with any construction project, there will be some disruption along the way.  Adel Partners representatives and the City of Adel will be meeting throughout the winter to plan for alternate access and hopefully minimize the impact of construction for businesses and residents.

Possibilities being discussed include business access through alleys or constructed walkways. The early summer festivals, Classic Car Show, IA Book Festival and Wine Fest, will be also be subject to some reorganization due to the project. Adel Partners Design Committee would like to take this opportunity to encourage businesses with alley access to consider sprucing up this often overlooked area and remind chamber members of the Alley Grant funds available to assist with such projects.

All chamber member businesses are eligible to apply for the grant funds by submitting  a project proposal outlining the project to be undertaken. The Design and Beautification Committee will review requests and fund the chosen applicants up to 50% or a maximum of $500.

The Alley Grants Program is designed for small curb appeal changes such as painting, cleaning, and flower planting.  A relatively small investment of time and dollars can have a great impact.

If your business will be affected by the Streetscape Plan and you are not a member of the Chamber of Commerce, this is the year to sign up! Your membership could pay for itself with the use of the Alley Grants program and additional benefits through the Chamber of Commerce.

The Adel Partners and downtown businesses appreciate everyone's cooperation. The end result will be well worth the efforts made towards this multi-year project!

To find out more about Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce membership or Alley Grant Program, please contact Directors "Van" VanBuren and Linda Boettcher at adel@netins.net or by calling 515-993-5472.

2010 Festival plans are underway and we will be scheduling committee chair meetings shortly.

Some changes are in the works, so watch this space for the 2010 festival dates!

Economic Development for 2010 will continue to host business seminars.

The first one will be January 26, as we host a seminar at the Adel Public Library that morning. USDA, Small Business Administration and several other organizations that offer resources to help small businesses will be present. We will have more details on this seminar later.

The Economic Development plans for 2010 also includes more Simpson College classes in Adel, at the Public Library.

Our sponsorship of these classes with Simpson should improve our local economy via a better- trained and educated workforce.

A Management Concepts class was just successfully completed by 10 attendees in November. Nine students took Business Writing last winter.

More business-oriented classes are planned for this year. The next class offered will be in the March-April time- frame.

If you have a particular class that you would be interested in attending, call 515-993-5472.

Attendees can take these classes for college credit or audit purposes. All previous attendees agree, the classes helped them with their job!

Discounts are available for chamber members and their employees that attend the Simpson College classes.

May next year be happy, successful and healthy!

Recipe of the Month
DDiscover Chef
Chicken Spedini

When I was in school, there was an Italian restaurant  near the campus that I called "home".

It sat about 45 people. The waiting lines started at 10 a.m. and ran into supper.

We'd take turns standing in line as if we were going to a concert. There was actually a "No lawn chairs or tents" sign.

They handmade six different Spedini recipes that they baked and then grilled just before serving.

There is something about the combination of good food, good service and good friends when eating that can make an day special!

This is my rendition of one of those great meals.

---------------------------

Ingredients:

4 Thin Slices of Ham
4 Thin Slices Provolone
4 Boneless Chicken Breasts
1 cup Bread Crumbs
1 cup Parmesan Cheese
1/2 cup Virgin Olive Oil
1/4 cup Chopped Parsley
2 Cloves Chopped Garlic
1/2 cup Chopped Green Onions
Dash Salt and Pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350.
1.
In a bowl mix together everything but the chicken, Ham and Prosciutto.
2. Set Mixture aside.
3. Rinse chicken breasts, dry and set in the freezer for 10 minutes.
4. Take out breast, lay flat and butterfly them with a knife.
5. Gently flatten with a mallet. Lightly salt and pepper.
6. Lay out one breast and add a slice of ham, a slice of cheese and a spoonful of the mixture.
7.
Flatten mixture, roll up chicken breast and put in a slightly greased pan.
8.
Repeat with remaining breasts.
9.
Place remaining mixture around breasts and cover with foil and place in oven for one hour.
10. Remove foil and bake for 10 minutes. (Optimally, you would grill the Spedini on all sides at this point, but that isn't always an option and baking captures quite a bit of the dish.
11. Serve with cooked fettuccine or spaghetti noodles, Pour the sauce in the bottom of the baking dish over the noodles. Add Parmesan, a salad and fresh bread.

Serves 4.

Enjoy!
