BASE® Raises over $7,000.00 for John D. Gomke Charity

BASE® Donation to John D. Gomke Charity 2013
L-R: Melissa Doyle, Cindy Harrington, Neil Aldrich, Steve Gomke, Jessica Gomke, Adam Harrington, Joe Havenhill, Jessica Reynolds, Terry Harrington.

BASE® began their fundraising efforts on May 1st and continued through the month concluding on May 31st. A local Adel company, BASE® serves the self-employed and businesses across the country through the administration of tax saving employee benefit plans.

This is the third consecutive year that BASE® has supported the John D. Gomke Charity. Last year, the company raised over $5,000 and hoped to surpass that amount in just a short time frame.

On Friday, June 21st, BASE® President Terry Harrington presented Steve and Jessica Gomke of the John D. Gomke Charity a check for $7,264.

BASE® took part in various fundraising activities throughout the month to contribute to their total. Aside from donations, employees sold butter braids, cookie dough, Schwans items, and returned pop cans. There was also a Schwans truck event that took place on May 17th in the Iowa Realty parking lot at the corner of Hwy 6 & Hwy 169 in Adel. Two Schwans trucks were parked for the afternoon which allowed customers to buy Schwans products on the spot and allow BASE® to collect a percentage of the proceeds. BASE® employees also participated “in-office” by donating money in order to wear casual clothing, which alone brought in $800.

BASE® is very proud of what they have accomplished not only this year but in the past years while fundraising for the Gomke Charity. They hope by doing this annual event they will generate more funds and awareness in the Dallas County area for the charity.

The John D. Gomke Charity raises money to benefit organizations that assist in caring and providing resources to sick infants and families who have lost infants in and around central Iowa. However, their efforts don’t stop there. In 2012, the Gomke Charity was able to do the following:

  • $5,000 was put into John’s Bereavement Fund at the Mercy Foundation—the SOLE fund that helps give keepsakes and coping education in the Mercy Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Emergency Room.
  • 3 Defibrillators (AEDs) were donated to the Panorama School District—including 2 for the school buildings and 1 to travel with the athletic events.
  • 1 Defibrillator (AED) was donated to the Adel-De Soto-Minburn School District to travel with the athletic events.
  • 1 Defibrillator (AED) was donated to the Nodaway Valley School District to travel with the athletic events.
  • Adopted a family who suffered the loss of an infant during 2012 to help cope with their first Christmas with a “Cheer Box”.
  • Replacement pads and batteries given to the Adel-De Soto-Minburn School District for prior AEDs donated that were expired.

Quote from BASE employee Neil Aldrich: “We (Base) have been sponsoring the Gomke foundation for a few years now. I always thought that it was a good charity, but now that I have two little ones of my own it really hits home. There isn’t a day that goes by when you don’t hear about something crazy going on in the world and as a parent, one of my biggest worries is how to keep my children safe as they grow up. The medical equipment that the Gomke foundation purchases could someday be needed to save one of my children’s life; or the life of someone else’s child or my neighbor’s grandkid. The Gomke foundation is a great local charity that helps strengthen our community. “
