Crystal Sharp of Adel Cedar Creek Animal ClinicCrystal Sharp has been a Veterinary Technician for 11 years and joined Cedar Creek in July, 2009. Originally from Creston, Crystal grew up in rural Iowa and always knew she wanted to work with animals.

A pet lover at heart, she has 2 English Mastiffs named Jewel and Molly and 2 cats named Callie and Squeaks.

After high school, Crystal graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a B.S. in Animal Science and a minor in Commercial Agriculture.

Her expertise focuses on small animals in regards to emergency and orthopedic care.

Before joining Cedar Creek, Crystal worked for a specialist in a large Des Moines practice, but the call to work in a smaller operation drew her to Adel.

Crystal’s appreciation for animal health has lead to the creation of Cedar Creek Adel’s educational opportunities for pet parents including Senior Care and Pet Weight Loss programs.

The Senior Pet program offers education and specialized care for pets 7 and older. While younger kittens and pups may only need to visit the Vet once a year, it is important to keep in mind that pets age 7 times faster than humans. When senior pets make only one yearly visit, it is as if you decided to avoid the doctor for 10 years!

The staff at Adel Cedar Creek know it’s very important to see aging pets on a regular basis as they may be able to detect illnesses before they reach an advanced stage. Crystal recommends that animal blood work be done to help prevent illness, especially in cases of kidney or liver disease. These serious problems, when spotted early, may be corrected with simple changes in food or medicine.

One of pet care’s fastest growing problems is obesity. The pet Weight Loss program helps educate pet parents about healthy living techniques for their pets. Pet parents have the opportunity to sit down with Crystal for a free nutritional consultation where the pets are weighed and measured. Crystal and the staff are then able to provide great insights to healthy options specialized to your pet’s needs.

For example, think about a 1 ounce cube of cheese. That may not seem like very much food to us, but the truth may shock you. To your cat, that same cube of cheese is equal to three hamburgers! Don’t worry, Crystal understands pet care can be overwhelming. “That’s why we’re here! Our job is to educate, and you can always call to ask us questions.”

Right now, the Adel Cedar Creek office has 3 active participants in the Weight Loss program, who are all making great strides! For some pets, just changing the brand of food has done the trick. Some have made the change to prescription foods, while others have opted for lower calorie, over the counter foods.

The pets have lost up to 15 pounds in just a few months and their owners can see a difference in the wellness of their pets. The once lethargic, arthritic animals are now able to jump into the truck and go for walks. With education and preventative steps, our pets can live long, happy, healthy lives!

Another preventative step to take is oral care. Did you know that 70% of pets over the age of 3 have an oral disease? Most of these issues lie under the gum line and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Crystal suggests daily brushing, though dental chews can help prevent or delay oral diseases.

Adel Cedar Creek Animal ClinicThat’s what makes Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic different. They offer personalized followup and individualized care which can only be obtained in a small, local office.

The staff honors the families they keep healthy with pet birthday cards and Spotlight Family recognition.

About once a quarter, the Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic selects a caring pet family from their list of clients. The Spotlight Family is featured in the Adel Cedar Creek newsletter with a story and photos and receives discounts for purchases at the clinic.

Cedar Creek is always looking for opportunities to get involved with the Adel community. Last winter, Crystal and the crew offered Holiday cards and gifts and plans to continue the tradition in the following month! Turning the exam room into a mini photo studio, the team has a great time taking photos of pets and their families, then creating one of a kind images for holiday cards or home displays.

Crystal also creates gift baskets for pets. These fun baskets are made for both cats and dogs, and offer special treats and toys based on the size of your pet. This is a great way to show your pet you care and give back to the community!

Profits from the special projects, gifts, and photos are put towards financial aid packages used at the clinic. Should a pet need a procedure the family is unable to afford, Adel Cedar Creek uses the funds to alleviate the financial burden.

Crystal and the Adel Cedar Creek Animal Clinic can’t thank their pet parents enough for embracing the clinic as family. Cedar Creek hopes to call Adel home for years to come!
